    A comfortable break in Georgetown

    rating14 Mar 2026

My wife and I stayed at the Campbell House hotel for four nights during a Far East tour which took in also Singapore and Langkawi. The hotel is very conveniently located in central Georgetown and all of the attractions of the town are mainly within walking distance. For our visit to Penang Hill we had to get a short and very inexpensive local bus journey from the Bus Station which was a short walk from the hotel.Check in was fine and we were given lots of information about places to visit, eating out etc.Our room was very comfortable and not noisy other than one morning when we were woken up by the drums from a Dragon Dance in a cafe across the road and from firecrackers one evening - we visited during Chinese New Year so these were more of a bonus than a problem. An à la carte breakfast was served in the Italian restaurant on the ground floor which was OK but there was not a great deal of choice and inexplicably lacked any fruit juices, not sure why. The Indian/Bangladeshi serving staff did seem a bit surly at times, the occasional smile would have been nice. However these are minor criticisms in what was a most enjoyable stay. Campbell House, Guest Services / Front Office at Campbell House, responded to this review Dear Robin,Thank you very much for sharing your detailed feedback following your stay at Campbell House. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your time in Georgetown and that our central location made exploring the city and nearby attractions convenient for you. We’re glad that you found your room comfortable and that the occasional sounds of the Dragon Dance and firecrackers added a festive touch to your stay during Chinese New Year.We appreciate your comments regarding breakfast and our service. Your observations about the variety and staff interactions are valuable, and we will certainly take them into consideration as we continuously look to improve our guest experience.Overall, we are thrilled that your stay was enjoyable and that Campbell House was a part of your Far East tour memories. We hope to welcome you back on a future visit to Penang.

    Beautiful heritage property

    rating13 Nov 2025

We loved our stay in this heritage property. Our room (Malaya) was beautiful and very comfortable. We had the beds separated out into twins and there was still plenty of space, including a small sitting area with a daybed. We couldn't even keep up with the generous a la carte breakfast and the daily sweet treats left in our room (although we confess that's because we were indulging in a lot of street food!). Last but not least, the staff deserve special recognition for being so welcoming and friendly, especially Diana and Kumar. Thanks for a wonderful stay! Campbell House, Guest Services / Front Office at Campbell House, responded to this review Dear JJ6568,Thank you for your wonderful 5/5 review! We're so happy to hear that you loved your stay in the Malaya room and appreciated the space, comfort, and personal touches like the breakfast and daily sweet treats — even if Penang's street food kept you busy!A special thank you for recognising Diana and Kumar — we’ll be sure to pass along your kind words. We truly enjoyed having you with us and hope to welcome you back again soon.Warm regards,The Team at Campbell House

Just had 3 nights in Campbell House, what a fabulous place checked in by Kumar who gave us so much information on George town and some great local eateries. The room was lovely my wife said the owner must have great taste as it's done so well. Treats in the afternoon, a great a la carte breakfast in the Italian restaurant downstairs and previously people commented on outside noise we slept through a massive thunderstorm and didn't hear a thing. Perfect location.Lovely place, very nice people highly recommended. Also we didn't go up to the terrace until the 3rd nights oops lovely place to chill in the evening as it cools down. Campbell House, Guest Services / Front Office at Campbell House, responded to this review Dear Venny,Thank you so much for your wonderful review and for choosing to stay with us at Campbell House! We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your three nights with us and appreciated both the comfort of your room and the little touches such as the afternoon treats.Kumar will be very happy to know that his tips on George Town and the local eateries made your visit even more memorable. We’re also glad you discovered the terrace — it’s a hidden gem to relax in the evenings after exploring the city.Your kind words about our breakfast at Il Bacaro and the décor of the house mean a lot to us. It’s wonderful to know that you felt at home and well taken care of.We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back again in the future for another relaxing stay in Penang.Warm regards,Andrea Mei

In the month of April 2025, my better half and I made our maiden trip to Penang. Being trusting and, it seems, somewhat gullible, we were taken in by the grand promises and glowing write-up of the rooms at Campbell House, located at 106, Lebuh Campbell. We booked the Deluxe Superior room, the only one boasting a bathtub. We checked in on the 11th and left on the 13th of April. Although three months have since elapsed, the unpleasant experience has lingered; hence, I am penning this review --- first, to unbosom our displeasure, and second, to spare anyone intending to stay there the abysmal experience we endured. The promised bathtub was little more than a broken relic, with visible veiny cracks, chipped enamel, and brown stains --- fit, perhaps, for a post-apocalyptic drama series entitled “What’s Earth Like 500 Years After Human Extinction.” So as not to imperil our safety, we did not so much as approach the so-called tub, which was unfit even for a foot bath. The complimentary breakfast received anything but our compliments. In all our travels, we had never encountered anything quite so skimpy and unpalatable. To compound matters, the Bangladeshi waiter was wanting in both courtesy and manners. The floor and staircase were uncommonly slippery. Fortunately, there was a Traditional Chinese Medicine clinic opposite the hotel, which we found somewhat reassuring in the unfortunate event of a disastrous fall down the steep staircase. The counter staff, I should say, were pleasant and approachable. That, I must concede, was the establishment’s ONLY saving grace. We shall return to Penang one day --- but most assuredly not to Campbell House, which ought to repair the bathtub, attend to the wooden flooring and stairs, and provide basic hospitality training to the said waiter. Campbell House, Guest Services / Front Office at Campbell House, responded to this review Dear Levinw2017,Thank you for sharing your thoughts following your stay with us in April. We are truly sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations.Campbell House is a restored heritage property dating back almost 150 years, and we understand that the unique character and original features of such a building may not appeal to everyone. Regarding your comments on the bathtub, we would like to clarify for future readers that no rooms at Campbell House include a bathtub as part of the amenities. The antique tub in the room you stayed in is a decorative heritage feature and not intended for use, and we regret if this was not immediately clear. We are also sorry to hear that our breakfast did not suit your preferences. While we understand that some travellers prefer buffets, we serve an à la carte breakfast freshly prepared to order, allowing us to maintain quality and reduce waste — an approach that many of our guests value, even if tastes differ.Your feedback on safety and service has been noted, and we will review these areas with our team. We are, however, glad to hear our front desk staff made a positive impression. In closing, we recognise that Campbell House may not be ideal for travellers seeking a corporate-style hotel experience. Our focus is on sustainability, authenticity, and preserving the heritage culture of Penang — values that define the experience we offer in every single touch.Warm regards,The Team at Campbell House
