    Charming heritage guesthouse

    rating30 Jan 2025

Loved the location of this guesthouse in Penang, close to eating places and attractions. Staff are polite and accommodating as well. It is a charming heritage guesthouse stretching across block of houses. Breakfast is provided - a hearty toast and eggs with condiments and fresh fruits. Food and drink wise, you can access hot drinks and water anytime in their dining area. There were banana bread slices to snack on as well throughout the day. You’ll need to remove your shoes to climb the stairs to your room if it’s on the first level. However it is a guesthouse and not quite what you’d expect of a hotel, so be aware when you decide to stay here. Our room was tidy and clean. It can get noisy with nearby traffic as the guesthouse is in a busy town area. So be aware, the rooms are not soundproof. No amenities are provided. You are advised not to throw toilet paper in the toilet, must be due to old plumbing systems, a bin is provided for this purpose. This was something to get used to! So be aware while the place has its charm, there are maintenance issues, it’s not a fancy hotel.

Nice enough place but TERRIBLE BOOKING EXPERIENCE

    rating02 Mar 2020

I booked this hotel for 4 nights using a well known booking site. But, the hotel is now part of a hotels chain named OYO, which acted as a "man in the middle" between my booking site and the hotel. Hence:- 24 hours before stay, I received an email asking me to go on some web page and press a "confirm" button, otherwise my stay was to be cancelled- while I was boarding my plane for Penang, I got a text message requesting me to call a Malaysian number in the next 30 minutes, otherwise my stay was to be cancelled! I was not nice on the phone as you can figure...- on the second day of my stay, OYO cancelled the booking on my booking site as "no show"! Given the content of the phone call the day before, I would not be surprised that they cancelled the stay so that I am unable to leave comments on my initial booking site...So, my advice after this experience is, AVOID ANY OYO MANAGED HOTEL!Otherwise:- the hotel is very well situated- the historical house has undeniably some charm- it is rather clean, even if the sheets could be better- the hotel staff on the premises was nice.

    Charming and good location

    rating16 Nov 2019

Decent room size and very gopd location. For the price i paid, it is value for money. But the bathroom ceiling was dripping water when it rains, i get wet when using the toilet bowl. Informed staff, came to take pics, mop the floor and left, no action is taken. The house is situation right next to a pub, the music went on past 12mn. If you need to sleep in a quiet environment, may not be suitable.

    Poorly maintained

    rating03 Aug 2019

Unclean and poorly maintained. Dusty floor and bed sheets with several stains. Cockroaches found near the bed.We change place the morning after.I’m not at all picky or fancy about where to sleep, however the place was below any standard.

How not to run a hotel

    rating09 Jul 2019

Absolutely awful! Poorly maintained, unclean and terrible staff. This used to be a great place to stay but now must avoid at all cost. There has clearly been a change of management and this has been a disaster. The room I had booked was already occupied when we arrived. We were told lies by the receptionist as of the reason why the room was not available but the manager told us the truth. Some new staff made a mistake with the booking. We were moved to the right room the following day.Breakfast is included but is extremely poor. Toasts, butter, jam, Roti Phrata and sauce. That is if you get this. On the last day only toasts were available. The receptionist told us that the hotel was quiet and therefore they did not prepare breakfast.... I guess that the fact we were guests escaped his mind...The same receptionist, a young guy, became quite threatening when I complained again about the choice of breakfast. He basically gave me the come on to have a physical fight..... Seriously????Unless you tell reception that you want your room cleaned, they will not do it automatically. This means no fresh towels everyday, etc.... They really cannot call themselves a hotel anymore. Although not allowed to smoke in the hotel, a member of staff is smoking in the courtyard. The hotel is poorly maintained, the internet intermittent and in need of a very serious clean up.If there was a case study on how not to run a hotel, this would be gold standard.
