Good for a one night stay

    rating16 Apr 2025

Full disclosure – we did not pay for this hotel, this was the hotel that the airline put us up in after our flight was canceled and we had to stay an extra day.ROOMS –The room was clean (as was the bathroom) and the beds and pillows were comfortable. However, the only thing to cover yourself with in bed was a single sheet. There was no blanket, nothing but the one, single sheet. The TV had channels only in Spanish, not even CNN International or anything. We could have used a couple more towels and they did not have face washcloths (flannels). The safe in the room did not work. The air conditioning did work well. The small pool area was fine, they did their best to keep the leaves that kept falling into the pool, out of the pool.FOOD –They have a restaurant attached to the hotel and that was quite good, probably the best part. We ate lunch and dinner there, and for dinner, the salmon was delicious! Washed down with a lovely, chilled Negro Modelo. There is a very large supermarket just a few minutes walk from the hotel – Soriana’s. We were able to get some provisions and bottled water there. Soriana’s also had a large hot food deli area where you can order food to either take with you or eat there as they had tables and chairs to sit at as well.If all you need is a place to stay for one night, it was fine, it was clean and suited our needs, albeit very basic. Fair for the price with some disclaimers

    rating31 Dec 2024

The room was clean and spacious. However there were several things that the hotel management should change: 1. Do not impose a schedule for hot-water for guests (7pm-12am!) 2. Get proper black out curtains for windows facing street, the blackout curtains in our room dud not fit window and bright light got in, and 3. Find a way to sound proof rooms. The woman at 3:00pm on 12/30/24 was also extremely unhelpful, not rude but pretty uninterested in guests. Finally there were a lot of rules at this hotel, except there were no rules about people speaking loud near the rooms! Ironic. Gestor de Experiencia, Guest Services / Front Office at Hotel Plaza Kokai, responded to this review Dear ON, thank you for sharing your experience with us. We appreciate your feedback regarding the hot water schedule, blackout curtains, and room soundproofing. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the team member's lack of attentiveness. Rest assured, we will address these issues with our management team to ensure a more enjoyable stay for our guests. We value your input as it helps us improve our services. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back and provide you with a better experience in the future. Thank you for choosing Hotel Plaza Kokai Cancún.

    It's a 2 star hotel not 4

    rating18 Aug 2023

The hotel is not a 4 star. I don't understand how they got that rating is a 2-star hotel. You can hear every single noise from inside your room , we were on the 3rd floor you can hear screaming from the swimming pool , next door , downstairs. The room has no fridge, which is incredibly hot inside. You can't keep any drinks fresh for a 4-star hotel. You would imagine they have it. The room is old , there is no cold water in the shower, only warm water or boiling hot. We paid for breakfast Included and I promise it is just fruit salad ,bread, and coffee. If you wanted to change your coffee for juice, they wodent let you so if you have a child it must drink coffee ? It is a joke , the bread is old and dry, and the fruits you get are awful. You have to pay additional for eggs or anything on the menu , i had a club sandwich, which was disgusting. Fries with all the burnt stuff from the fryer, as you can see in the picture , oil dirty from the kitchen. It is not a 4 star hotel and booking.com. Take the piss for sharing this rating with them. The swimming pool had insects flying inside all day. You tell the receptionist, and they guide you to where the pool stick is so you can clean it yourself. I highly recommend people to read this review and pay attention to it. Is a budget place to stay for a quick night no more. Awful experience

    Traveler Beware

    rating21 Aug 2022

To be perfectly honest, this was my 2nd stay with hotel plaza kokai. the room rates historically are fair and expectations should be adjusted accordingly. my first stay was for an extended period of time (3 months) and it was a vary enjoyable experience. Which is why I chose to return. However, this stay was incredibly awful. from the moment i arrived the shenanigans began. The hotel intentionally over booked the property where-by not having either of my 2 rooms available ( my stay was for 10 days). therefore, we were put into their Jr suite.. together for 1 night and told we would get a free breakfast... the free breakfast never happened. the compensation offer was nowhere near the cost of both rooms for 1 night. and to be honest the room was worthy of being called a Jr suite. as if that was not enough, i was charged $60 USD for my husband being in my room??? my room was a double with 2 double beds!!! what is more disappointing is the daytime front desk staff was not interactive and had attitudes because i dared to question the overbooking the extra charge for my husband and the unacceptable compensation offer. i did book through Booking.com and reported the matter to them and booking was quite helpful but were not able to secure compensation for the overbooking nor were they able to get the additional money charged to me for my husband. however, they did give me a Booking.com credit to my account. the hotel gave some rediculous excuse about the room being a single room (which it was not). aside from those issues there was a rather large group of travelers whos region and national origin i will leave out but lets simply say their behaviors and attitudes were gruff rude inconsiderate and carried airs of aggressive entitlement. they were allowed to occupy the considerably small pool area from the hour it opened through the hour it closed (approx. 12 hours a day) all the while chain smoking and chain drinking. this allowed behavior was allowed and successfully prevented any other guests to enjoy any time poolside. They hung clothing out of the front of house windows for the purpose of drying them (underwire, swim shorts, collared shirts, t-shirts etc.). which gave the already aged looking hotel a guttural appearance.i would like to add... the housekeeping maintenance and restaurant staff were amazing. considering the dated and often broken-down condition of the hotel and equipment the staff did an amazing job with their duties. the rooms are kept tidy and sanitized. the hall floors are glittering and shiny. the restaurant is attended with the greatest pride and attention to diners. The menu is decent and considering the hotel setup, the cooks do a good job filling orders. among the restaurant staff Osacar and Orlando go above and beyond the call of their assigned duty.I wish i could say i will return to hotel plaza kokai but i will not. the fiasco of the rooms and charges and p*ss poor compensation and terrible attitude of the day time front desk staff the beds have not been replaced nor mattresses turned in ages. the mattresses (if i could call them mattresses) were mis-shaped and worn out. they were lopsided and lumpy and contributed to my severe back issues.the internet is challenging at times. the hot water is unavailable if you want to shower after 9 am ( but this may have been due to the large traveling party and the full house of guests). either way its a struggle to shower late morning.the hotel is conveniently located to the Puerto Cancun and the major through fare.i would say beware and keep expectations lower than normal and maybe your stay will be better than mine

    Good location for short term

    rating01 Feb 2022

The hotel is really nice and close to everything, but needs little renovation. We stayed just a few days and the hotel is really good for the short time. Bus terminal, downtown in the walking distance, taxi to the beaches on the Hotel Zone just 10-20 min on a car, taxi about $5-10 dollars one way. Public bus R1/R2 going to the beach as well, around $0.2 one way, 20-30 min drive and bus station located 5 min walk from the hotel.
