Not for a nice beach vacation

To start off with the positive, the room is very nice and clean. However, overall, the hotel did not feel worth the money. First of all, it is not a true adults only hotel. That‘s a shame because we paid a premium for it and it turned out to be basically false advertising. One part of the hotel (the villa) does allow kids. While these guests cannot use the tiny common hotel area like the pool, they very well can use the hotel‘s beach area. Thus, it defeats the purpose of an adults only hotel. Leading to the next major problem, the beach. It is definitely not the best stretch of Holbox Beach. Rather narrow and the water is muddier. Also, there is construction debris in the water right in front of the hotel. The hotel‘s armchairs do not have any pillows and are therefore very uncomfortable. Every other hotel in the neighborhood (even cheaper ones) provide pillows. That‘s a shame, as the beach „product“ should be key for a beach front hotel. We therefore spent almost every day at the beach club next door and rather spent a bit extra for comfy armchairs. Overall, not worth it. If you want a nice beachfront vacation, rather go to one of the hotels in the north eastern half of the beach.

Relaxing stay at Puerta Azul

We had a great stay at Puerta Azul. The location was perfect for us. It’s about a 20 minute walk down the beach from the center. (It’s also about a 20 minute walk down the beach to Punta Coco where the bioluminescent bay is.) We were not interested in the night life, so we liked being a little bit out of the way. The beach is gorgeous and is just steps away from the hotel. The beach club was very comfortable and we spent a lot of time sitting in the shaded chairs. The complimentary breakfast was amazing. You get an item from the menu with coffee, bread, fresh fruit, and fresh juice. Portions were generous. We ate one night at the beach restaurant and the food was good. We got drinks there most nights. There was a good variety of music there, including a live DJ one night.The room was large and clean with daily maid service if you want it. Shower had good hot water. AC worked well. There is filtered water available in reception. A small table in the room would have been nice.The pool was a nice place to cool down after the heat of the day.Everyone on staff was warm and helpful. They helped us organize taxis and tours that all worked out great. I can’t say enough good about them.If we go back to Holbox we will definitely return to Puerta Azul.

Lovely quaint hotel with an amazing restaurant

Wonderful little hotel on a beautiful island. The room is cute, well decorated with a comfortable bed and steps away from the beach. The restaurant on the beach is incredible with fresh delicious food. It’s a tropical island so mosquitos are a part of life, but there’s a convenient store with big spray and essentials. Town center is walkable from either the beach or streets. Overall we had an amazing time. The best food we had on the trip and such a lovely convenient small hotel on an off the beaten path island. Will definitely return!

We did not stay here but we ordered the whole fried fish. Great service right on the beach - highly recommended. Surprisingly not many places offer fried fish on the island. This was a pleasant surprise. Was initially missed due to signage being hard to find.

The best place to stay on Isla Holbox!

Paradise! Such a wonderful place to stay! The room was beautiful and well equipped with everything needed. All the employees were so nice and helpful. The rooftop restaurant menu is designed and overseen by a James Beard Award winner. The food is outstanding! Breakfast was by far my most favorite meal. The hot cakes were so good I had them everyday. There is a massage spa right on the beach with a list of massages to choose from. The beach bar serves you at your lounger, or walk up and order. I would suggest trying the passion fruit juice. Outstanding!!The day before we arrived, a storm with near hurricane force winds ravaged the island. A lot of damage. La Puerta Azul only sustained a few broken limbs and some debris. The beach in front of the hotel is raked daily. Debris is removed to leave a pristine white sand beach. Warm water, white sand. Is there anything better?Since the island relies on Mexico's grid, there is an occasional blackout. This doesn't last long. Internet is sporadic, but why is it needed when you are on vacation to rest and relax? Just unplug. There are many different places to eat on Isla Holbox, along with many shops to pick up a memory to take home. Every night the locals block off a street and invite all to come and join the fun dancing in the street. Such a fun experience! I am usually ready to leave at the end of my vacation, not here! I was sad to leave and plan on going back again. My next time will be when I can swim with the basking sharks.Looking for a quiet and relaxing place to go? LA PUERTA AZUL is the place to go! I would give it 10 stars if I could!!!!
