    Old-World Spanish-Colonial Charm...

    rating12 Apr 2026

Nice atmospheric old Spanish-colonial style buildings, close to the historic centre of San Cristobal. Rooms large, clean and old, but charming and sympathetically modernised. For the history buffs, Graham Greene used to have a room here ( "Our Man in San Cristobal de Las Casas") as a long-term resident. There is also a highly-rated chef/restaurant in-house, with a reasonably-priced menu. Breakfast arrangements - slow and slightly chaotic, since breakfast was ordered individually from a menu. The room used for breakfast was also small, meaning guests sometimes had to eat outside in the atrium, in the morning cold (San Cristobal is 2,138m above sea-level). [Suggestion to hotel management - when you have a large group of guests arriving/leaving at the same time, the larger breakfast room (Salon) should be used, and individual breakfast orders from the menu should not be taken. There should be a set fixed offering (scrambled eggs/ fried eggs) instead.]

    Pretty and comfy hotel.

    rating22 Mar 2026

Hotel is centrally located and beautifully decorated lobby area with fire pits at night near the restaurant making a lovely setting for dinner. Staff was extremely attentive. There are many rooms, lots of hallways and stairs so not the best for someone physically challenged. Rooms were large, interior window so rooms were on the dark side in spite of several lights in room. AC worked fantastic. Nice, clean bathroom, good shower power with good warm water. Safe in room. Everything here was great except for the breakfast buffet. Very limited offerings and I thought it strange they offered spaghetti and sauce for breakfast. Many other restaurants close by that have fabulous breakfast. Would stay here again and do recommend. Perfect location.

    Good quality hotel but noisy

    rating25 Dec 2025

First impressions - nice hotel, old sprawling villa/mansion converted into a hotel, entrance leads you past a reception into a central courtyard with trees and plants. Stylish room but - our room was located on the ground floor just off the internal courtyard and windows facing the street with lots of pedestrians seeing right into your room. The street is quite busy with traffic long into the night and starting early in the morning. Unfortunately, we were copping it from both sides as the corridors are tiled as is the courtyard - we heard every single person coming in way past midnight and then groups of people departing very early in the morning. We asked to change the room but were told that they are full. At the end we just hated the hotel due to the fact that we slept about 3 hours both nights we were there. The positives - hotel is stylish, well looked after, excellent location. Rustic boutique-style hotel

    rating02 Feb 2025

I liked it, but my partner didn't. It was boutique-style hotel surrounding in internal paved garden courtyard (which was lovely). The room was along a corridor and felt a bit like a monk's cell. No external windows just a wooden shutter opening to the corridor. Room and bathroom felt a bit compact and dingy. Noise insulation was minimal. Wouldn't fancy it if a stag party was in the premises. But as I said I quite liked it. The restaurant and bar both spilled attractive seats and tables into the courtyard with impressive standalone open fires adding colour. The buffet was limited but hot egg dishes were cooked to order and delivered to your table. Hotel location was pretty good, two minutes walk from the main square. Added note for history, noted author Graham Greene was a previous resident and has a wall note commemorating the fact among other famous ex-residents. Our Man in Mexico. We Visited only the restaurant, it was amazing

    rating28 Dec 2024

We didn't stay here, we visited just for dinner as a group of 20. Hotel and restaurant seemed very nice and luxurious. Food was amazing and employees were friendly. Located in the center of the town. We didn't have any safety issues. Since we visited as a group, I am blind to the prices. Tania González, Atención al huésped/Recepción at Sombra del Agua Hotel San Cristobal, responded to this review Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience at Tarumba our restaurant in Sombra del Agua. We hope you visit us again very soon.
