Extremely Disappointing Experience at Secrets Huatulco
04 Jun 2026
Extremely Disappointing Experience at Secrets HuatulcoFrom the moment we arrived at Secrets Huatulco, our experience has been nothing short of disappointing. This hotel has unfortunately not lived up to its advertised standards, and I would never recommend it to anyone. A one-star review is the best I can give.Upon arrival, we were sat down with no clear instructions regarding the resort amenities or restaurant options. The Preferred Club was quite underwhelming—a small, uninviting room with appetizers that appeared to have been sitting out for ages. We were quickly disappointed to find our room was small and had broken flooring in the bathroom. The swim-up pool was in a deplorable state, covered in bird droppings, with bugs floating in the water. The umbrella was rusted, bent, and torn. The next day, we were upgraded to a nicer room, but the issues persisted: the umbrellas remained in poor condition, and the landscaping around the hotel was unkempt. The gym was tiny and overlooked a scene of weeds and disarray, and the spa felt old and neglected. As for the food, I would rate it one star as well. During our room transfer, my expensive hat was crumpled and ruined because the staff carelessly shoved it into a bag. We also never received the promised bottle of tequila for our room. The primary reason for our stay was to celebrate our engagement. My boyfriend had arranged a special proposal overlooking the ocean, but when we arrived, the staff had no knowledge of our plans. We were seated at a table that wasn't ready, and the romantic setup we envisioned was poorly executed. The pool area had broken tiles and litter, and it seemed like the workers were just standing around rather than maintaining the space. Additionally, the beach was closed during our stay, and there were broken lounge chairs scattered about. What struck me the most was that no one here seems to enjoy their job; I haven’t seen a single guest smile during our stay. Service was lacking in friendliness and efficiency—this morning, we were confused about breakfast arrangements only to find the restaurant was closed with no prior notification. We are booked here for seven nights, and I feel embarrassed for my fiancé, who wanted this trip to be memorable for our engagement. Instead, it has been a source of stress and frustration. I will attach some photos to illustrate our experience, but overall, this entire stay has been a major disappointment.

Secrets huatulco and the ultimate vacation club nightmare
03 Jun 2026
Let’s start with the cons, as they seemed to heavily outweigh the pros. My husband and I came to secrets huatulco back in January following a purchase of a 3 night stay through ultimate vacation club- an absolute SCAM of a program. We attended the program 2 years ago and after a 2.5 hour presentation where they basically promised the best of the best vacation packages for the cost of a mortgage per month and signing over our first born, we declined and dodged all the levels of offers until they finally offered us one last option- which we gullibly paid for ($700 for a 3 night stay at what was supposed to be the best of their best hotels - with top of the line service/ amenities and room with a view sounded like a deal we couldn’t pass up). **Lesson learned to always read the fine print**Out of a total of maybe 10-15 hotel options on the certificate we purchased (despite the whopping 145 options they claimed to be partners with, we decided on secrets Huatulco- one of the few adults only getaways. After check in, we were brought to our room, and were extremely disappointed. The room was just ..okay.. and really showed the age of this of this resort. There was chipped paint on the wall, oddly designed wooden plank tiles in the shower, a toilet with a glass door enclosure (with no lock)- left little to the imagination. Our room had two double beds… why does an adults only hotel even have double beds?? The mattress on the bed was clearly aged (read: fifty shades of brown) and should have been changed years ago. Definitely not comfortable. The jacuzzi right outside our room was covered in a layer of grime. When we requested an upgrade (politely) we were declined, lest we chose to pay an upgrade fee. The hotel was definitely not at capacity from what we later observed. Felt like this was a small accommodation that could have been made to improve our stay. The layout/ design of the entire resort was dated and not guest friendly at all. There were lines of people waiting to get on the elevators, almost at all times. The elevators were constantly in a state of repair (pretty sure we saw three repairs in three days). If you choose to take the stairs, you’re faced with winding staircases, which have also seen better days and the walls could definitely use fresh coat of paint, as it looked like we were descending into a restaurant basement and not the pool deck.No one expects five-star meals three times a day at a resort like this, but the food was terrible. The breakfast buffet had very little selection. The lunch buffet somehow had even less. There was no variety. Breakfast and lunch had the same exact items available day after day and none of it looked particularly fresh. You also couldn’t serve yourself most of the hot food which was behind a glass barrier. You had to wait for one of the staff to wander over and they were never in a hurry to get to you. Dinner at the restaurants was hit or miss. You could wind up with a decent dish but if you did, the serving would be absolutely tiny. Desserts were so small, they looked like they were made in an Easy Bake Oven. The spa/gym was located on the opposite side of all the room, on a cliff (which if you decided to walk and not call for a ride, you’ll really regret not challenging yourself on a treadmill incline more)The sky bar rooftop bar was also located in an obscure location, that I’m sure 90% of guests didn’t even realize existed because the staircase to reach it was incredibly steep and slanted on the diagonal (definitely not ideal for anyone under the influence of anything, let alone anyone who chooses to wear anything over a 1” heel!) There are a few infinity pools.. though unlike the name suggests, they look out onto very finite views- a lovely collection of unkempt bushes and rugged palm trees. Pro’s: The bay view is very pretty. The sand is on the coarser side, but fairly well kept/ clean on the immediate property. There’s a bunch of activities (kayaking, pickleball, archery, beach volleyball just to name a few). The Bartenders at the marlin poolside bar were fantastic, they really hustled in making drinks and are very accommodating and overall knew what they were doing. Room service was ordered through the Hyatt app, and thankfully arrived in a timely fashion. Though again, the food was just OK. The staff were all incredibly polite and helpful when needed. Additional grievances: A letter to the Unlimited vacation club: If you’re going to promise prospective members all the bells and whistles of this elitist membership, and you want to offer a sample stay, please reconsider offering your lowest tier hotels. Additionally, don’t make empty promises that we don’t have to attend another one of your presentations and then put it in the fine print that we do, lest we want to accrue a penalty fee.We had to attend another 120 minute presentation (about 50 minutes of which were wasted having lunch with the presenter) interfering with our already limited time to “enjoy” the resort.Secrets huatulco is in dire need of a rebrand.
