    Stunning Lodge with breathtaking views.

    rating22 Apr 2026

This gorgeous lodge has to be on one of the loveliest places on the planet. The service was excellent. The cottage was stunning. We only wished we could stay longer. Ann Gregor, General Manager at On The Point - Lake Rotorua, responded to this review Thank you so much for your kind words. We’re delighted you enjoyed the lodge, the views, and the service—it really means a lot to our team. It’s wonderful to hear the cottage made such an impression. We’d love to welcome you back anytime, hopefully for a longer stay next time!

    Not one for us unfortunately

    rating18 Apr 2026

I want to try and be fair but ultimately this hotel did not suit us. On the plus side our suite was enormous and overlooked the water. As can be seen from the promotional video it is quite old fashioned in style but we expected that. There are a few things which the hotel can't do much about - I think it is fair to say that the lake has a smell of sulphur which you can smell from time to time and there are a lot of flies at certain times of the year. This meant that we could not open the doors to the balcony in our room. In addition the hotel needs more staff - the same person was checking in new guests and serving dinner and there was a long delay to the food. We did not enjoy the dinner. Later in the evening there was nobody around to ask for any drinks. We also experienced a few communication difficulties which marred our stay and led to some awkwardness. The room rate is very high - although we did stay at an expensive time of year and the room was large. It was just too high for the full nature of the experience that we had, taken as a whole. (Please note that you need to telephone a New Zealand telephone number to gain access on arrival so you need to be able to do that on an international phone.) If we were planning the road trip again we would have reconsidered staying in Rotorua. Ann Gregor, General Manager at On The Point - Lake Rotorua, responded to this review Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re pleased to hear you enjoyed the size of your suite and the lake views. We would like to provide a little context for some of your observations. Rotorua is a unique geothermal region, and while there can occasionally be a natural sulphur scent, it is typically mild in our venue but it is part of the area’s distinctive environment. Similarly, the seasonal presence of trout flies is a natural occurrence—these insects are an important food source for the trout in the lake and can be more noticeable at certain times of the year.We do, however, take your comments regarding staffing, dining, and communication very seriously. This is not the standard of service we aim to provide. I am currently looking into what may have occurred during your stay, and it’s possible this was due to unexpected staff illness at the time. The lodge can accommodate 30 guests at capacity and our staffing level is 25-26 during the peak period. From what we can see, this appears to have been an isolated situation rather than reflective of our usual level of service. That said, we sincerely appreciate you bringing it to our attention, as it allows us to review and ensure we maintain the standards our guests expect. We also understand your concerns regarding value based on your experience, particularly during peak periods, and your feedback will be considered as part of our ongoing efforts to improve.Thank you again for your honest review—we truly value it.

Peace and seclusion on Lake Rotorua

    rating15 Apr 2026

On the Point is situated right at the tip of a peninsula on Lake Rotorua, well away from the busy town center. The location alone makes this hotel a truly special place. Furthermore, the service was consistently friendly and attentive. We stayed in a luxurious cottage near the main house, which included a spacious bedroom, a private living area with a gas fireplace, and a fully equipped kitchen. Having a washer and dryer available to us was very practical. On the veranda, we even had our own private hot tub with a wonderful view of the lake and the gardens, where horses, sheep, and donkeys grazed peacefully.Given the heavy duvet and the many cushions on the bed, a turn-down service would have been a nice touch. Unfortunately, this wasn't provided, but even so, we felt very much at home at this hotel. Ann Gregor, General Manager at On The Point - Lake Rotorua, responded to this review Thank you for your lovely review. We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed the peace and seclusion of our peninsula location, as well as the views across Lake Rotorua. It’s great to know the cottage suited you well and that the facilities—from the fireplace to the hot tub and laundry—helped make your stay comfortable and relaxing. We also truly appreciate your kind comments about our team’s service.Regarding turndown service, this is something we carefully reviewed following COVID, including guest feedback and changing preferences. As a result, we made the decision to discontinue it as a standard offering. That said, we understand that for some guests it remains a valued part of the luxury experience, and your feedback is appreciated as it helps inform our ongoing decisions. We’re so pleased you felt at home during your stay and hope to welcome you back again in the future.

    Tranquility in Abundance

    rating18 Mar 2026

On the Point enjoys a stunning position overlooking the lake. For me, it came into its own in the early evening. The sun slowly setting, the water flat calm and a front view seat on the terrace.Magical.We’ve noticed all over New Zealand many spots which just can’t help exuding peace and serenity. This was one of the best in that regard. Our room was a mini suite, well appointed and comfortable. The bathroom had its own jacuzzi and a well powered shower.Excellent breakfast offering and the dinner experience didn’t disappoint. Most of all, the customer service was friendly, welcoming and ultra efficient. I can’t list all the names but Nicki was excellent at breakfast time, full of insights and suggestions. Nadia in reception- and elsewhere- went several steps further in helping us organise a next night external stay ,a great help. The lodge is 10 minutes away from the centre but not really a problem. Our two trips through town to the Redwoods Walk and Hamurana Springs were no problem at all. The latter was particularly lovely. Ann Gregor, General Manager at On The Point - Lake Rotorua, responded to this review Thank you so much for your beautifully written review — “Tranquility in Abundance” truly captures what we hope every guest feels during their stay with us.We’re delighted you were able to experience the magic of those early evenings on the terrace. Watching the sun set over the lake is something we never tire of, and it’s wonderful to hear it left such an impression. It’s also great to know you enjoyed your suite, the jacuzzi, and both your dining experiences. We take a lot of pride in creating a comfortable and memorable stay, so your kind words mean a great deal. Most especially, thank you for highlighting our team. Nicki and Nadia will be thrilled to hear your praise — we’re very lucky to have them, and we’ll be sure to pass on your comments. Helping guests make the most of their time, both at the lodge and beyond, is something we genuinely love doing. We’re so pleased you explored the Redwoods and Hamurana Springs as well — both are special places. It was a pleasure having you stay with us, and we hope to welcome you back again for another peaceful escape in the future.Warm regards,The On The Point Team

    Passed its best

    rating15 Mar 2026

We booked the Main suite and expected to be blown away - we weren’t. The decor is old fashioned which may be a nod to the history of the place, but we noticed areas where corners appeared to have been cut. The bathroom, for example, was massive but, rather than install a proper shower, a plastic cubicle had been installed in a corner. We also noticed cracked tiles in the room while the tiles on the lovely patio had been laid on felt and moved when the felt was wet.Of more concern were the steps in the room which were frankly dangerous - two steps up to the bathroom of which one was marble and the other carpet. This is an accident waiting to happen. We slept poorly and found the room very hot. On our last night we found a possible cause - a polyester sheet under the cotton sheet. Also there is only one small air conditioning unit for a very large room which would not be sufficient in warm weather. On a positive note, the service was outstanding, the staff friendly and the food delicious. Ann Gregor, General Manager at On The Point - Lake Rotorua, responded to this review Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We’re very sorry to hear that your stay in the Main Suite did not meet expectations, particularly as this is a space that should feel truly special. We appreciate your comments regarding the décor and maintenance. While the style of the lodge does reflect its heritage, this should never come at the expense of comfort or quality. Your observations about the bathroom, tiles, and patio are taken seriously, and we are already reviewing these areas with our team.We are especially concerned to hear your comments about the steps. Guest safety is a top priority, and we will be assessing this immediately to ensure it meets appropriate standards. We also apologise for the discomfort you experienced with the temperature and bedding. This is not the level of rest we want our guests to have, and your feedback is very helpful as we look at improvements to both climate control and in-room amenities. That said, we truly appreciate your kind words about our team and the dining experience. It means a great deal to know that the service and food were highlights of your stay.Thank you again for your honest feedback — it gives us the opportunity to improve. We hope we may have the chance to welcome you back in the future and provide the experience you were expecting.Warm regards,The On The Point Team
