Novel experience – walking the backblocks of an empty airport & hotel/hostel accommodation at night. Clean. Quiet night.

    rating11 May 2026

Review of the Lylo Hotel, Christchurch Airport, New ZealandChristchurch Airport and the Lylo Hotel have become synonymous with our travel to New Zealand during the past three years – given the inconvenience of early-morning flights and/or late evening arrivals. Therein, of course, is the convenience/value of the hotel. We first stopped over in 2023 having arrived on a late-night flight. This time we had an early morning departure. Apart from the name of the place – which has changed – the hotel was much the same as we remembered from earlier - highly convenient, friendly people, value-for-money.We had booked into a ground floor ensuite double room #23 which was accessible along a corridor that linked directly to the lobby/concierge inside the main entrance. It was in a quiet part of the building and away from the communal sleeping, food-preparation, dining, recreation areas, laundry, etc.The room was compact/space-efficient; it contained a single narrow passageway from the door to the window - higher than usual on the outside wall of the building. To the left as you enter was the ensuite bathroom then a double bed set into the three surrounding walls. So, there’s a measure of decision-making/choice/clambering around for who sleeps against the wall and who sleeps against the passageway? Get up in the night and you may have to clamber over your partner. Seating? On the side of the bed. You can store your cases under the bed or in the passageway. There’s a small television fixed to the dividing wall of the bathroom which enables you to watch it laying on/in bed. Limited space apart, the room was convenient, comfortable and welcome for an early departure the next day. Sleeping area, passageway and bathroom were clean and presentable. There was plentiful hot water. The television contained an easy-to-use alarm that worked-well for that wake-up call. We enjoyed a quiet night. We checked out the next morning by following the instructions at the desk of the concierge … to drop your e-key in the box provided on the counter. There was a novelty element about leaving – the fading darkness/creeping light and the empty airport outside, the walk along the quiet back blocks following the covered pathway between the hotel and the terminals. The covered section stopped/started close to the neighbouring Sudima Hotel. We knew the route from earlier and of the importance of collecting a luggage trolley for the journey – from wherever there was one available – terminals, car park, road outside, etc. This we kept in the room over night.Just across the car park from the hotel is the Spitfire Shopping Centre with focus supermarket and a selection of eating places – Mexican, Korean, Thai, Indian, etc. We chose the latter and, after dining well, returned to our room for an early night. We had checked in electronically for the flight 24 h earlier without being aware of the change of departure time and then arrived at the airport terminal for 06.00 h (for that original 08.20 h departure time). The flight had been rescheduled. An engineering issue had cropped up – we were informed - and departure would be at 15.00 h or thereabouts the same day. We had nine hours to fill and came away from that experience with a couple of tickets that would later provide lunch at the airport.Sleep beckoned, however, and we figured to re-explore the checkout time available at our hotel nearby. There was no concierge available at the desk (24 h service it said) so we headed down to the communal catering/cooking/dining/food/recreation area and made ourselves a cup of tea from the food/drinks that we had left there – which is what departing guests tend to do. Twenty minutes later we returned to the lobby. We were fortunate with a highly accommodating concierge who returned our door key and reminded us of the 11.00 h deadline for departure. It resulted in an additional – much appreciated - three hours sleep. We should have been so fortunate. Full marks to the LyLo Hotel team for their flexibility/consideration.Peter Steele12 May 2026 Farhan Shaikh, General Manager at LyLo Christchurch Airport, responded to this review Kia Ora Peter,Thank you sincerely for taking the time to share such a wonderfully detailed and reflective review of your stay with us at LyLo Christchurch Airport. Reading through your experience was an absolute pleasure for our team, and we are truly grateful that you chose to stay with us once again as part of your New Zealand travels. We are delighted to hear that LyLo Christchurch Airport has become a familiar and dependable part of your travel routine over the past several years. There is something very special about becoming a trusted stopover for guests returning to New Zealand, particularly during those challenging late-night arrivals and early-morning departures that can often make travel feel exhausting. Knowing that our location, convenience, and value continue to make those journeys a little easier for you is exactly what we strive for.It was lovely to read your observations about the atmosphere surrounding the hotel and airport during the quieter hours of the evening and early morning. Your description of the fading darkness, creeping daylight, and peaceful walkways around the airport precinct painted such a vivid picture of the unique experience that comes with staying at an airport hotel. Many travellers rush through these moments without noticing them, so it was wonderful to see the experience captured with such appreciation and detail. We are also pleased that you found your ensuite double room clean, comfortable, quiet, and practical for your overnight stay. As you noted, our rooms are intentionally designed to maximise efficiency and affordability while still providing guests with everything needed for a comfortable rest before continuing their journey. We appreciate your honest and balanced comments regarding the compact layout and bed positioning, as feedback like this is very helpful both for ourselves and for future travellers considering their accommodation options. At the same time, we are glad the plentiful hot water, comfortable sleeping environment, and practical features such as the television alarm helped make your stay smooth and relaxing ahead of your early departure. It was equally lovely to hear that you enjoyed exploring the nearby dining options at Spitfire Square and that you had an enjoyable meal before returning for an early night. Our proximity to a variety of restaurants, supermarkets, and airport facilities is certainly something many guests appreciate, particularly after a long day of travel. We are especially grateful for your kind comments regarding our team during the unexpected disruption to your flight schedule. Travel delays and sudden changes can be incredibly frustrating and tiring, and we are very pleased that our staff were able to assist by welcoming you back for some additional rest after your postponed departure. Your recognition of the flexibility, understanding, and consideration shown by our concierge team means a great deal to us. Providing genuine care and practical support during stressful travel situations is something we value highly, and it is rewarding to know that this small gesture made such a positive difference to your journey.Thank you once again, Peter, for your thoughtful review, your continued support, and for sharing your experiences in such a detailed and engaging way. Reviews like yours not only encourage our team but also provide future guests with valuable insight into what they can expect when staying with us.We truly look forward to welcoming you back again during your next visit to Christchurch and hope that LyLo continues to remain a comfortable and reliable part of your New Zealand adventures for many years to come.Best WishesLyLo Christchurch

Good option for early morning departures out of Christchurch Airport

    rating06 Apr 2026

We recently stayed at the Lylo Christchurch hotel near the airport and had a good experience. This is a basic, sort of boutique backpacker style place with simple rooms that are small but functional, perfect for a one night stay prior to early morning flight departures. Check-in is at 3pm sharp but quick and easy. You can use the facilities and lockers prior to check-in if needed. Our room was sufficient with a comfy bed, bit of space for repacking luggage, simple bathroom, telly mounted on the wall. The property includes a really nice indoor hangout area with lots of chairs, tables, hammocks and large kitchen space with loads of cookery and cutlery if you want to prepare simple meals instead of eating out at the nearby Spitfire shopping area just next to the hotel. Importantly, you can walk to/from the airport in 10 minutes from the property. Overall, Lylo is a well located and good, functional place near the Christchurch Airport. Room rates are reasonable for the location and quality of property. We'd be happy to stay here again based on this experience. Farhan Shaikh, General Manager at LyLo Christchurch Airport, responded to this review Kia Ora BradJill,We are grateful that we had the opportunity to hosting your stay. Thank you very much for the detailed feedback, we will continue to monitor and make enhancements in the areas that can be improved so we can offer an even better experience in the future. Thank you once again. Safe travels.LyLo Christchurch

    Could have been better

    rating24 Feb 2026

It was terrible from the start when the man on reception was really not interested. We booked two pods. I thought they would have some kind of door but it’s basically a blind so not really private or secure. My friends pod had no electricity and the receptionist basically shrugged his shoulders. The kitchen was quite dirty also. The icing on the cake was a man tried to climb into my friends pod during the night!!! She could have been assaulted. There were so many random people and no security I didn’t feel very safe and will advise any lone woman to be careful here. I have tried to contact Lylo but it’s very difficult to find a number or email to a person and not an AI message Farhan Shaikh, General Manager at LyLo Christchurch Airport, responded to this review Kia Ora,Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are truly sorry to read about your experience — this is absolutely not the standard we aim to provide at LyLo Christchurch. We are especially concerned to hear about the interaction you had at reception. Our team should always be welcoming, attentive, and proactive in resolving issues, and it is disappointing to hear that this was not your experience. Please accept our sincere apologies for this.Regarding the pod setup, we understand that the privacy style may not suit everyone, and we are sorry if this was not what you expected when booking. However, the issue with the electricity in your friend’s pod should have been addressed immediately, and we apologise that it was not handled appropriately at the time.We are also very concerned by your comments about cleanliness in the kitchen. Maintaining high hygiene standards is extremely important to us, and your feedback will be shared with our housekeeping and management teams for immediate review. Most importantly, we are deeply troubled by the incident you described involving someone attempting to enter your friend’s pod. Guest safety is our highest priority, and this behaviour is completely unacceptable. We take matters like this very seriously and will be reviewing security procedures and overnight monitoring to ensure our guests feel safe and secure at all times. We sincerely regret that you and your friend felt unsafe during your stay.Thank you again for bringing these matters to our attention. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us improve, and we are truly sorry that your stay did not meet expectations.Best WishesLyLo Christchurch
