  Distinction Hotel Dunedin . Bad Service. Bad Manners . This is their distinction

  We stayed there for 5 days thinking it was the best hotel in Dunedin . First DayWe went out for a long walk at about 8 am . We put the “ please clean our room sign “ outside our hotel Came back with lunch at about 1 pm . Room not cleaned . No issue . Housekeeping team probably busy We put the “ Do not disturb sign “ between 1 pm ~ 2 pm ( time approx) . Had our lunchWe left about 2 pm for a tour . Came back at about 7 pm plus . Room was still not cleaned or bedsheets changed . Nothing done !We called front desk and informed her about it . She came to our room at our request . After a brief explanation , one of her first words were “ How do I know that you didn’t put the sign the other way after you came back “ , in effect accusing us of lying and cheating . She further adds “ it’s not that I am accusing you but many other guests do the same to us at this hotel “ in effect also accusing her hotel guests are liars . We were furious . Utterly disgusted at the service quality and lack of respect for their hotel guests . Demanded to see the manager in charge Next morning , went down , talk to the manager. Nice affable person . After exposing the situation , we found out that the service staff , the night before , hid from her boss her accusations .Never mind that . What the manager said shocked us He said “ I guess it’s your bad luck that you did not get your room cleaned. The cleaning staff saw your “ do not disturb sign “ during the 1 hr we are inside taking our lunchThis is one and only distinct occasion where I put up a sign “ do not disturb “ between 1-2 pm and do not get my hotel room serviced . Even though the “ please clean the room sign was up 8am -1 pm and from 2-7 pm . Perhaps this is how Distinction Hotel got its name . Distinct disregard for customer servicesI was told by a friend that this is how services at New Zealand hotels are . Poor and indifferent I beg to differ . The other places and people in New Zealand are very service oriented and pleasant. I don’t think I will ever patronized Didtinction Hotel again ever again. To provide some additional context, our housekeeping team attempted to service your room at approximately 1:30pm, however the room could not be accessed as the door was locked and the “Do Not Disturb” sign was displayed.When you contacted reception later that evening around 7:00pm, our team attended promptly and serviced your room at that time.The following day, when we spoke in person, I again apologised for the inconvenience and provided a box of New Zealand chocolates as a gesture of goodwill and appreciation for your understanding. Together, we also agreed on a plan for housekeeping to service your room daily at 11:00am to ensure there were no further issues during the remainder of your stay.Due to your confronting interactions with team members,, our Housekeeping Manager personally serviced your room each day for the remainder of your stay to ensure consistency and avoid any further misunderstandings. No further complaints or concerns were raised for the duration of your stay, so we believed the matter had been resolved at the time.While we understand your frustration regarding the initial missed service, we do feel the matter was addressed promptly and professionally by our team, who remained committed to assisting you throughout your stay.Kind regards,General ManagerDistinction Dunedin Hotel

  What a gem!

  We stayed one evening as part of a 3 day tour of the Southern Island. We had stayed the previous night at Distinction in Te Anau which was ok, but not great. However, we were pleasantly surprised by this hotel in Dunedin. The room was absolutely lovely with plush carpet and a bed that was heavenly! Even thought it's in the middle of downtown we found it to be very quiet. The bathroom was large and updated and we were thrilled that it had a washer and dryer. We would absolutely stay here again!

  Great stay with Harbour views

  Stayed here for 2 nights prior to catching an expedition ship. Hotel staff were great and very helpful. The room was a good size and very comfortable with zero noise, so very quiet. The restaurant for breakfast was outstanding as it catered for everyone. Dinner at the hotel was also great. Parking was secured across the laneways and was $30 a day which we thought was rather expensive, but when in Rome as they say.   Lovely stay in truly 5 star accommodation

  We were part of a railway tour group from Christchurch to Dunedin, then to Invercargill and had the pleasure of finishing long, slow train journeys with a great rest up at the Distinction Dunedin over two nights. A more than king size bed was good to find! Service was fantastic and all of the staff were very friendly, smiley and helpful.The priciness of the hotel and attached Parcels restaurant were out of our usual budget but well worth it.   A perfect base for our visit to Dunedin

  One of the best hotels we used during our extensive New Zealand holiday. The staff were very helpful and the hotel was smart and clean.The room was brilliant and incorporated a washer and a dryer in the bathroom, which was invaluable as we had by then been travelling for two weeks.The location is near most central attractions such as the Octagon and the area round the station.We used the paid parking which is in a block literally across the access road from the entrance to the hotel. It was a weekend and the car park was fairly empty such that we easily found space on the ground floor - I suspect it doubles as commercial parking during the week as the hotel is in the business district when it would be much busier - and also cheaper on-street parking may be an option at weekend. Just remember to get your ticket validated at reception!We would definitely return here if we came to Dunedin again and there's so much we missed that we would love to return.
