    Handy but tired

    rating26 Apr 2026

There is often a wait at reception; however, one staff member is often there when I go and is reliable. The rooms are a good size and clean, but pretty scuffed. The windows are old and often don't close properly. The protruding windowsill lets some light in, blinds would be good. Rooms with adjoining doors have a wardrobe in front of the gap, but if you look down the side, you can see the light around the doorframe. And, you can hear pretty much everything in the next-door room. I had the same room three weeks in a row and reported the broken showerhead. It was fixed on the third week. Handy location, but unless you get a good special rate, you can do better.

    Pros and cons

    rating26 Apr 2026

This is clearly an older property that’s currently in the middle of a (semi) refurbishment/refresh. And when I say semi, I mean it feels like a half‑attempt. I was staying in an executive room on the top floor, but the hallway looked like it hadn’t been touched since the 70s - original doors that had simply been painted over, old‑school room number signs, and a general “time capsule” vibe. I wasn’t expecting luxury, but it’s obvious the refresh is either still unfinished or the budget didn’t stretch far enough. I was not actually aware of this at any point of booking or check in and was irritated to have building noise (drilling and hammering) from the floor below for most of the day (while I was trying to work) it did stop at night. I feel like this should be communicated ahead of time. The room itself followed the same theme. At first glance it looked fine, but once you started paying attention to the details, the age and shortcuts became pretty noticeable. One example was the wardrobe it looked a little out of place and had been positioned directly in front of the adjoining room door. It felt less like a design choice and more like a way to hide or block something, which added to the sense that the room had been patched together rather than thoughtfully updated. The TV was also mounted far too high on the wall, even though it was a decent size. The bathroom was nice enough, but there were no hooks at all, just a single towel rail, which made it awkward to hang anything while showering. The shower pressure wasn’t great either, and the shower head kept sliding down the pole, meaning I had to keep adjusting or holding it in place.Back to the old building point, the noise insulation is as you’d imagine so a lot of noise coming from neighbouring rooms (you can literally hear everything like they are in the same room) and a lot of hallway noise coming into the room.I understand the restaurant is run independently, but the buffet breakfast was not good at all. Whether it had been sitting out too long or was simply made with the cheapest ingredients possible, it was verging on inedible, and the atmosphere felt more like a staff break room than a hotel dining space. I ended up going across the road to Hangar Coffee, which was exceptional by comparison.Overall, my stay was acceptable, however it’s clear that everything is done on the cheap rather than with any clear vision or commitment to quality. With a more thorough refurbishment and better attention to detail, it could be a much stronger offering but in its current state, it falls short.

    good location to central wellington

    rating04 Apr 2026

Have stayed at the Mercure a few times, often good deals on booking.com. Twin bedrooms are suitable for a family of 2 adults 2 kids, small but comfortable rooms and a good base to explore Wellington. Right in the CBD. I would recommend paying for their secure parking. The area can be a little shady at night time on the street, but their parking is fully locked, gated and under 24/7 surveillance with only hotel guests being granted permission to access so very little risk of break in/car theft. on the 5th floor so not much noise from street really. Not sure what it is like lower down. Only 1 thing that took me down from a 5 star on service and that was that they hadn't noted our booking request about what our ideal floor level would be. Otherwise can't really fault hotel.

Check in from 2pm, didn't get into room until 4.30 pm!

    rating14 Feb 2026

Waitangi weekend 202 (6+7 February 2026)Booked a single night’s stay during a busy (long) weekend for the Hotel. Dropped bags off early in the morning (effortless) and confirmed with the front of house that check in was from 2pm. Unfortunately, access to our room was not until 4.30pm, understandably a frustrating wait. The front of house team did their best, but the crux of the issue was no managerial supervision present because of the public holiday, long weekend (i.e., rostered off, despite the hotel being close to capacity (+70 rooms)). This left several groups of guests waiting in the lobby for over 2 hours to access their rooms after the 2 pm check in.Subsequent email correspondence with Hotels Area Manager (re. The Mercure and Central City Hotel and Apartments) has been quick, attentive and honest about this experience. Importantly, lessons learnt have been acknowledged and improvements to services prepared if needed (e.g., beverages for waiting guests). Whilst the beginning of this stay was a frustrating experience to say the least, hopefully others will not find themselves in the same conditions and circumstances, if they do, then lessons have not been learnt and the management has questions to answer. Running a hotel is a 365 day operation and close to capacity is close to capacity be it a wet Tuesday or public holiday and management should base their presence on how busy they are, not the calendar and a regular Monday to Friday roster.Enjoy your stay and ka kite anō. (The one star for service reflects that experienced at the time of trying to get into the room, and does not reflect that shared with the management by email discussing the (very) late check in to our room)

Good location brings hotel to average and not poor

    rating12 Feb 2026

The positives: the location is excellent. It’s easy to walk everywhere in the CBD from the hotel. That’s a real highlight and if that’s mainly what you’re after this place is perfectly adequate. The downsides: everything else is just ok. A big downside is security - floors can be accessed via one of the elevators without a room card, even though a sign says otherwise, meaning that any member of the public can access the floors. There’s no air con. The shower pressure is really weak. Sounds can be heard clearly from the hallways. Nothing is truly terrible (except the security aspect) but nothing is truly great either. Just ok.
