    W Muscat – Luxury Pricing, Surprisingly Poor Attention to Detail

    We arrived at W Muscat after a 5–6 hour drive from Dubai with a baby, looking forward to a relaxing stay at a property carrying the W and Marriott Bonvoy name.At check-in, we were informed that a higher floor was considered an upgrade, which was perfectly acceptable. We were also advised that we had an ocean-view room, although the view was largely partial and overlooked the InterContinental. Neither of these points bothered us much.What was difficult to overlook, however, was the condition of the room itself.The moment we entered the bathroom, there was a strong unpleasant odour, comparable to that of a public washroom. This is not something any guest should encounter, particularly in a premium hotel charging around AED 800 per room per night, and certainly not when travelling with a baby.We immediately contacted the front desk. The call initially went unanswered. When they eventually called back, we were informed that a housekeeping manager would come. After a considerable wait, someone finally arrived—only to acknowledge the issue and say that the bathroom needed to be cleaned.Frankly, that response made the situation even more disappointing. If the solution was simply cleaning, why was the room released to guests in that condition in the first place? Basic room inspection before check-in should be standard practice at any hotel, let alone a luxury brand.Other aspects of the experience also fell short. No welcome drink was offered, staff seemed uncertain about basic property information such as whether the pool was heated, and the overall demeanour of several team members felt indifferent rather than welcoming. The smiles, warmth and confidence one expects from a luxury hospitality brand were noticeably absent.For guests who have travelled hours to reach the property and spent a significant amount on multiple rooms, these details matter.I hope management views this feedback as an opportunity to improve. Luxury hospitality is not just about the building or the location—it is about attention to detail, room readiness, and making guests feel genuinely welcome from the moment they arrive.Unfortunately, this stay did not deliver that experience.     We were fortunate enough to win a night at the W Muscat through Hi FM and Reap Entertainment and what a fantastic experience it was. From the moment we crossed the threshold of the hotel, we were warmly greeted and guided. The staff were polite, friendly, knowledgable and surpassed our hopes and expectations. The hotel itself is stylish, exceptionally clean every part of it has been considered carefully to meet the needs of the guests. We would like to mention Khuwailid Salim, who greeted us upon arrival, for helping to arrange our room to ensure the sleeping comfort of our family and going out of his way to make our children feel very welcome, by having two cakes made for them decorated with things that are of interest to them.
