Excellent historical venue, with a spa and pools

    rating03 Apr 2026

Very scenic hotel, very well located in Elvas, near the fortress walls, 50mns drive to Merida or 1h40 to caceres, it is the prefect base to explore both Extremadura and west part of Alentejo.Easy to find, you unload your suitcases either at its entrance, or drive intonthr garage, on the right after the entrance (ring the bell) there is a lift to ground floor. There's plenty parking im the street and around Elvas, in particular in the evenings, and it was free of charge, the hotel has about 20spots, for 10€ a day, a good deal in case the town ia full. The reception is literally at the entrance door to the street. The building is a former Covent, reconverted into a luxury style hotel. However, no bell boy to help.you schlep luggages to the room, like you would expect here, our room was 212, on ground floor toward the spa. We had plenty of space, 2 armchairs and a round table, plenty storage space, a tiny bathroom, and unfortunately no in room espresso machine like in any 4 stars nowadays. The bed was a large king size, 1.8m by 2m, we had a view on the city fortification and the alentejo partly. Other rooms on 1st floor or further to the left seems to have open views to the Alentejo, so much better.Across our room was located another inner garden with a playground, small water slides for young kids, while the main pool (not heated) is in another courtyard and garden between the spa and the main building. Outdoor pool area was fantastic, lot of sun during all day long, a small garden with olive trees, and the smaller heated indoor pool is next to it, together with the small gym and spa (2 saunas and a squared type jacuzzi,...). Nb: to enter the pool and spa you must have flip flops and a swimming cap.Bar serves well priced drinks, 9 to 11€, either indoor or at the pool. The main restaurant is as well along the main gorgeous courtyard, where you will have breakfast in the mornings.Breakfast is of good quality and choice is varied, juices are freshly pressed, fruits of the season freshly cut, you can order various omlets, and coffee was good too. While the building and installations are prime, so is the location too. The service felt sub par, no one helped us with suitcases, our demand for a room far from the bar and access was disregarded as we close enough to the bar to hear the music played by some kind of traditional band one evening, and be awokenened by many unruly guests shouting on their way to their bed at midnight every night. Clearly management, when guests ask for a quiet room in their booking and again at reception, this must be honored. Same with letting guests schlepp luggages, and not providing any bell boy service in such establishment. If these could be improved this establishment would be fail proof. Everyone was friendly, the place is superb, the location Elvas is unique, and price was right considering (120€ per night)I can only recommend this hotel overall.

Historic convent hotel with superb gastronomy

    rating20 Sept 2025

The hotel is in the upper, old part of Elvas and is a huge, gorgeous former convent building. The rooms are huge and bring the high standards of the Vila Gale chain. But the real highlight is just walking around the hotel, including the pool area and the main cloister garth. There is a fantastic bar in the hotel and drinks can be enjoyed in the courtyard or the cloister corridors. Breakfast was a super lavish buffet featuring the area’s signature Alentejo bread. On a return visit would love to try their award winning chef dinner dishes. A one-night stay here in September was also very reasonably priced and Elvas is a wonderful UNESCO city worth everyone’s bucket list. Converted from 18th century convent...

    rating21 Apr 2025

Nestled within the walls of the fortified city of Elvas, this hotel once served as the Saint Paul Convent. Its conversion to Vila Gale Collection Elvas brings 18th century architecture into the modern era and utilizes vast interior open spaces for both public and private areas. Although our suite was very spacious and had wonderful views of the nearby ramparts from all the rooms, it was surprisingly sparsely furnished and with extremely uncomfortable seating options. Our interactions with the staff were always pleasant and helpful. We opted to include breakfasts and were not disappointed. We even went for dinner in the hotel and were delighted with our seafood mains of Sea Bass and Golden Cod fillets and of course a nice bottle of Val Moreira Reserve White. Disappointing

    rating26 Mar 2025

The reception is good but the decor is weird. The hallways are peopled by spooky mannequins lurking in corners in different military uniforms. The central cloister courtyard is lovely. The room was very spacious. The en-suite was not. The bed was very hard and a sweet housekeeper arrived with a topper to make it more comfortable when I complained. The room was about 18° so I put the heating on but it cut out half way through the night and I woke at 6am too cold to get back to sleep. No amount of button pressing would make the heater come back on. Breakfast was good, hot food cooked to order not dried out under lamps or in chafing dishes - except for the coffee which was dire dish water. I can’t comment on the dining room as we ate out in more genial surroundings. I can’t comment on the spa as we didn’t use it. I just feel that it could be so much better. A Historical Site in Winter... A Camping in Summer!

    rating12 Aug 2024

Vila Gale Elvas is an amazing historical site. Magnificently maintained and excellent staff, but one receptionist (Jose), who hopefully will be re-trained for dealing with Spanish guests... Rude, unpleasant, and misconducted with my wife and me... very uncomfortable! (even me being a club member... never seen!!)The rooms are spacious and comfortable with everything you may need. Good breakfast, variety, and quality are highly cared. The cleaning service "just good", but they don't do more than minimal service...in four days, they didn't renew the toiletries... Parking is very good, spacious, and easy. Excellent! The very worst point: guests don't have/respect any rules... (at least in summer)... swimsuit and T-shirt all day, from breakfasttodinner...some one with the same for three days...; even when staying at the luxury social rooms... During the day, in summer, this historical site becomes a "Camping"... but...4****... hahaha. I realised just at the arrival that I was in a camping...(too late)...I firmly recommend this Vila Gale for wintertime... never ever in summer months!
