    BED BUGS: AVOID!

    rating09 Oct 2019

Please avoid this hostel! My partner experienced a serious case of bed bugs here. Instead of helping us, or being slightly concerned about our bodies full of terribly itching bite marks, staff ignorantly laughed at us for "complaining about mosquitoes on an island".Even with photos of the dead, bloody bugs all over our bed and a demonstration of the endless red spots on our bodies, they did not think it was necessary to disinfect everything. We cancelled our final 2 nights but will probably never see our money.Worst experience on an otherwise incredibly beautiful island!

Cheap, clean, and basic, but not worth it.

Horta hospidaria JSF. Room is basic shelter, the cafeteria is generally clean and the roof doesn't leak, but that's where the positive comments end. We stayed in several different rooms all were the same. Every faucet leaks, showerhead is a joke that won't stay up, toilets are loose, toilet seat is loose. No window screens on second floor. Rooms smell old moldy and musty. Beds are a disaster. Springs poking into back. Lumpy crooked mattress. Roosters crowing starting at 4:00 am and go all day until 8:00pm. Ok, that's not the fault of management, but it's a serious factor if you contemplate staying here.

lumpy, lumpy beds and a noisy neighborhood rooster

    rating15 Nov 2017

On the surface, JSF Hospeteria looks like an average hostel type property with private bathrooms. The building is older but the reception was warm and welcoming. And, we can’t really fault the facility if there are roosters in the area that insist on crowing before dawn.Even though the room looks like it was decorated by my grandmother, the furniture was sturdy (just like my grandmother’s !) and the room spacious, meaning it would be an average hostel.Beds too hard or too soft are a personal preference, so that’s not a significant factor in the rating. However, beds so lumpy that you can feel the coils means that the hostel cannot meet my expectation. Additional items needing attention are the constantly leaking faucet and the shower bracket that doesn’t hold the shower head in a usable position. The hot water took five to ten minutes to heat up and the cold water tasted terrible (we’ve been drinking tap water throughout the Azores and this place was the only problem we had in addition to Horta airport). The room is in need of refurbishing - the floor tiles were cracked in several places.A basic breakfast is included – rolls, cheese ham, jams, coffee machine, tea, fake juice, cereal, yogurt. Fortunately, across the parking lot is a fab Continente supermarket with outstanding pastries !!The town of Horta is a short walk away .....

    Simple, good value

    rating22 Oct 2016

I really appreciated the location. Horta isn't too far away (~10 min walking), there's parking if you rent a car, and the hostel is right next to a grocery store, close enough that it's not a pain to carry back what you buy. The staff was super helpful, letting me check in even though my last-minute reservation hadn't come through the computer system just yet. And the rooms are surprisingly large for a budget hotel, with a decent view on the sea-facing side.My one complaint is that they recommend not drinking the tap water; luckily the next door supermarket has bottled for cheap. (4L for a couple euro)

    Affordable, clean and quiet

    rating01 Sept 2015

I stayed for business reasons, but this is not a business accommodation. It is for families, lonely travelers, people who look for a convenient place close by Horta hospital (coming from one of the other islands). Basic facilities and breakfast, but large rooms, warm staff, affordable, clean and quiet. Recommendation: mind the mosquitoes (do not open windows at night, specially with light inside). I had no problem myself, but a colleague got some bites.
