As someone who’s lived in Japan for years, I always tell UK visitors to look beyond the usual tourist routes. Here are some local favourites that give you a real feel of everyday Japan—places we locals love and recommend.

Yanaka, Tokyo: Skip the city rush and stroll through Yanaka’s quiet streets. This old neighbourhood survived the war and still has a charming, traditional feel. Small cafés, local bakeries, and family-run shops line the streets. It’s the Tokyo we grew up with.

Kurashiki, Okayama: A beautiful town with a historic canal area, Kurashiki feels like a step back in time. The white-walled warehouses, now turned into shops and museums, are a peaceful break from big-city life.

Kagoshima’s Sakurajima: This active volcano is just a short ferry ride from the city. Locals often head there for hot foot baths and fresh seafood. The view at sunset, with the volcano in the background, is something special.

Kanazawa’s Higashi Chaya District: While Kyoto gets most of the attention, Kanazawa’s old geisha district is just as lovely—and far less crowded. You can walk along quiet alleys, sip matcha tea, and visit small gold-leaf workshops.

Okinawa’s Zamami Island: Everyone hears about Okinawa, but not many go to the smaller islands. Zamami is a local favourite for its clear waters, friendly people, and relaxed pace. Perfect for snorkelling and slow beach days.

Nakasendo Trail Villages: Walk between old post towns like Magome and Tsumago, where locals still run traditional inns. It’s a great way to see Japan’s countryside and enjoy warm, home-cooked meals along the way.
