  We recently returned from a trip to Pico Island, which included a brief stay at Vinhas do Calhau. The accommodations were spacious, clean and comfortable. However, what made the stay exceptional was the presence of the lovely Ana Paula, the woman who warmly greeted us at reception and took care of us throughout our stay. It was wonderful to feel so welcomed as we arrived. She made us feel like we had found family on the island. Ana Paula shared a wealth of information about how to enjoy the island, which was so appreciated. She helped us to plan our time to be sure that we had an incredible stay. But it gets better- when I arrived at the airport, I realized that I had left my passport and wallet in the room! We called Ana and asked her to put them in a taxi to the airport, as we didn't have time to go back and forth. Instead, she went above and beyond for us, and drove my documents and wallet to the airport to meet us! That was more than I had ever expected and I couldn't have been more grateful. We will return to Pico one day, and thanks to Ana, we know we have a home at Vinhas do Calhau.

  Bed bug infestation- stay away!!

  Bioth of us were bitten all over from bedbugs- huge red itchy bumps!! Obviously the hotel staff knew they had an infestation as they came with alcohol to disenfect straight away. ‘Thats what we always do’ they said also did they confirm that its bed bugs. Stay away!!!!!!!

  If you hapoen to arrive to a remote island as Pico here is #1 essential for you: Ana, the actual manager of this property, a stranger-sister whom you did not know you have, who just gets you. Apart from a very nice high end property, Ana took care of me, and my expectations from this vacation. She know everything in the Island by heart. She is generous, kind and smiley! I stayed extra 6 nights because of her welcoming approach!   Def refer to Susan M review below….she’s spot on. I basically was going to repeat everything she said. The design as previous post wasn’t an issue for us, just kind of deal w it. Stunning views for sure. We didn’t have a rental car upon arrival, but our check in lady got one for us, I can’t recall her name, but she was super sweet n helpful. You will need a car unless u want to walk 50 min to town. Although the walk along the coast through vineyards is nice. Overall, this was a great place to stay but secluded.   Villa misses the mark

  With a beautiful setting close to the ocean, we stayed in one of the new two-bedroom villas (not the hotel for which most of the reviews are for). There are some design issues including literally no where to put your luggage in the bedroom. Due to exceptionally poor planning on the designer's part, we "opted" for the floor in the main living area. The western facing decks are without any shade creating an overheated interior and a relentlessly hot and uninviting deck in the afternoon. Plantings or some sort of fabric for the shade structure will likely be added. However, the value of the existing villa is not worth the price given these issues. I offered management constructive criticism including the notion that a discount should be built into the price until these issues are resolved as I genuinely want the place to succeed. I encourage you to ask for a discount in advance if these matters remain unresolved. Twenty-four villas are in the works. Note: we were properly warned about construction noise before arriving, to be clear that was NOT an issue.
