    Beautiful Property That Falls Short

    rating20 Apr 2026

I stayed here as part of a Backroads hiking tour through Portugal. The restoration is impressive, and the hotel is huge, but the minimalist design feels cold, with no inviting lobby or bar to relax in. My room was a highlight—spacious, well-designed, with great water pressure and decentralized temperature control. Service, however, was disappointing: guests aren’t allowed to use an iron, and I was told it would take 40 minutes to press one outfit, even though the hotel was nearly empty. Dinner was equally underwhelming, with poor service and forgettable food. Overall, a beautiful property that falls short on service and hospitality.

    Unique and immaculate!

One of the most interesting hotels I’ve been to. Beautiful architecture, spacious clean rooms, and full of history. The Turkish bath and pool are a must-do while staying here.

    A different place

    rating25 Jan 2026

The main trait of this hotel is an extraordinary location in the very monumental site of Alcobaça. Everything looks impressive and huge in this establishment: huge endless corridors, rooms, courtyards, high ceilings... in contrast with an austere and contemporary decor. There´s a parking lot outside. The room I was given was very big too, perhaps not very cosy though. Everything was impeccable clean and beds really comfortable. Bathroom was brand new and impeccable clean too: quite as big as a living room in a modern appartment by nowadays standards. This is a very quiet and relaxing place, dotted with an original indoor swimming pool and wellness facilities. Good breakfast. The complex is so big that, besides the monastery, the hotel and other spaces, a part of it seems to be unocupied yet. Of course, visiting the monastery is a must, you can´t miss it. The town has a convenient location, as many points of interest are at a short driving distance.

Impeccable rest in a place with history

    rating09 Aug 2025

We stayed at this hotel for eight nights in August. We loved almost everything, from the fact that it was located in one of the monastery's wings to the architect Souto Moura's vision. Our room was on the second floor, in a quiet area, and the bed was very comfortable (the hotel being pet-friendly, we felt the room next door would have a dog, but overall, we didn't feel uncomfortable). We felt immersed in the minimalist decor, but with all the refinement of the woodwork, Vista Alegre crockery, etc. The indoor pool and Turkish bath were also greatly appreciated. Breakfast, which was generally very pleasant, we enjoyed the fresh juices and particularly the space and the lounge (library). The staff was also very friendly. Definitely an experience worth repeating.

An excellent place to visit the area, with excellent services

The hotel is part of the Mosteiro de Alcobaca and looks sensational. It may seem austere to some, but this is the Cistercian style present in the monastery, which is also found here. It would be simple to just build a modern and comfortable hotel, but I find it extremely difficult to keep the initial line as close to authentic as possible. The result seems fantastic to me - you feel all the past in these old places, while comfort is present everywhere in the hotel. The spacious room, the excellent bed, large and comfortable, the very luxurious bathroom, but also the rich breakfast and the whole appearance make us recommend it very warmly. We visited Obidos from here, but also Tomar, Nazare....
