  Make it or break it? I still am not sure.

  Even if the building is dated management decisions and training could make or break an experience. I am not entirely sure about mine.During checkin staff started chatting in Portuguese amongst themselves. I do not speak portuguese and I did not get the feeling they were talking about me but I found it very strange they did that whilst I was being checked in by one of them.All of a sudden a couple stood next to the reception and the person still doing my checkin started talking to them - in english this time as the other guests obviously were not from Portugal. They talked about how many years the couple chose to return to exact this hotel and their plans for the evening. Again, very strange experience while being checked in.The building and the rooms are dated. Tidy, but in need of repairs and upkeep. The balcony door did not lock and wind was blowing through the seals. A/C was working but very loud - you needed to increase TV volume if A/C was on. The windows and balcony doors had not been cleaned in ages.The walls show traces of stains from bags, trolleys, travel cases or just dirt. The grouting in the bathroom shows mold stains. Drinking glasses and cutlery was in need of thorough cleaning prior to use. I do not understand who decided to leave a gap underneath the room door. Not just a small gap but 1-1,5cm of space. You could easily see the hallway´s light shining through at night - at least I did not need to turn on the light on my way to the bathroom. Unfortunately this gap also resulted enabled me to hear any sound from the hallway and - as I checked - any sound from inside the room.The breakfast choices were ok, nothing fancy. Right in the main dining room staff has a cleaning station where they remove leftover food and stack dishes before moving them to the kitchen. At times this gives a background noise of cutlery and plates clinking and food being scraped off as if sitting directly next to the dish cleaner back in the kitchen.Why the dining room faces the pool - I do not know. Maybe someone thought it attractive to watch people swim or eat - depending on one´s own perspective.The hotel is located outside the city center (takes about 20-30 minutes of walking from the main station) but they offer ample parking spaces should you arrive by car.A Pingo Doce supermarket with an upscale selection is about 300m down the road.   This is a 3 star hotel next to an apartment building. Dogs barking, construction noises. The pools (not heated) are very nice and good for children. Service is friendly and attentive. No concierge to help with daily activities. We were in a nice room with a balcony on fifth floor with a view of the ocean. Breakfast buffet plentiful. Easy one block walk to Oceanside and restaurants.
