    DO NOT BOOK A STAY AT ARTVILLA, CADAVAL, PORTUGAL

    My advice is DO NOT BOOK this accommodation. We booked a 6 nights stay through Booking.Com with the right to cancel up to a couple of days before check-in. Artvilla confirmed the booking directly to me thus cutting out Booking.com. I didn't realise this at the time. In order to attend a funeral in UK we needed to shorten our stay to 4 nights so emailed Artvilla around 4 weeks before our stay. Artvilla did not reply for over two weeks but then replied stating that they could not find the reservation or the €816 paid in advance. I thought we had been scammed - it was extremely stressful. I sent a copy of the bank transfer note and the Artvilla confirmation and eventually Artvilla confirmed the shorter stay. When we arrived at Artvilla the owner/manager showed us to our accommodation, agreed she had to refund around €300 and we never saw her again. No-one visited our room to empty waste bins or clean up during our stay. Waste bins by the pool blown over in strong winds were left rolling about with the rubbish lying around the pool area for the duration of our stay. On the last day no-one turned up to provide the breakfast we had already paid for. On attempting to chase up the refund using her preferred means of contact (Whatsapp), the Artvilla owner/manager responded to stay she will not do so and will not respond further.

    Great rooms and hospitality in the Portuguese countryside

    Stayed in ArtVilla for a weekend with a group of 20 friends. Everyone got a distinctly different room; not one fits all. I recommend to ask on beforehand such that they can match a room for your needs. The owners are really friendly and helpful and serve a great breakfast. A great place to relax in the middle of nowhere. Only one drawback the pool is very small.

    We were a group of 4 couples, intending to hill walk for 4 days (but we got a bit diverted by the other interesting places to visit in the area). 3 couples had double bedrooms and we had a studio. The accommodation was all beautifully specified (one of the owners is an architect and she did the design work herself) and very comfortable. The absolutely best aspect of our stay was the welcome, generosity and warmth of everyone who worked there (although only one member of the team spoke good English). The breakfasts were fabulous; the one night we dined in we were royally catered for. We used the communal barbecue one evening and dined at an excellent local restaurant (recommended by the hotel) another. The village is very quiet, almost eerily so when we were there in late September. Nevertheless I heartily recommend this as a delightful place to stay.

    Gracious hospitality and attention to detail

    We spent 3 nights at Artvilla in September, staying as part of a group on a walking holiday with friends. Catarina and her family could not have been more accommodating. We had a superb breakfast each morning - a feast for Eu7 - and the family made dinner for us too on one occasion, also excellent. This small complex of smart rooms clusters around a courtyard with barbecue and plunge pool, and there is spacious lounge space inside too. Our room was spotlessly clean and stylishly appointed (betraying Catarina's architecture background) with excellent en-suite shower room with body jets. The location is lovely, there is good walking on foot from the village, a small but well-stocked shop nearby and some good restaurants - although these are driving rather than walking distance.I would not hesitate in recommending this excellent and intimate family hotel.

    Excellent and quiet stay in central Portugal

    We stayed almost a week in this nice Artvilla in a perfect maisonette. Located in the very small place Vila Nova, next to Cadaval, about 60km North of Lisbon in the green countryside and wine yards, Artvilla consists of several differently shaped and decorated double bedrooms or apartments, a small pool and terraces for each apartment. There is also a nice central "living room" where you can have a great breakfast buffet (€ 6,-- pp). The hosts are tremendously friendly and speak English and French next to Portuguees. You can always ask for recommendations for trips to the beaches or lovely cities to visit - if you want to leave this nicely decorated and calm place! 😉
