Location

This highly traditional hotel occupies a former hunting chalet and is nestled amidst the hilly landscape overlooking Funchal, only 15 minutes from the centre with the sea, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and many different shopping venues. Public transport departs from stops located just steps away. Situated at the heart of the famous and original gardens of Palheiro, the hotel offers direct access to Palheiro golf course. The airport is about 15 km from the hotel.

Facility

The resort was built in 1804 and renovated in 2022. 38 rooms are available to guests in a 3-storey main building and 2 auxiliary buildings. The multilingual staff at the reception desk in the lobby are ready to assist you with check-in and check-out. Amenities include a cloakroom, a baggage storage service and a safe. Wireless internet access in public areas allows guests to stay connected. The tour desk offers assistance with booking excursions. A garden provides extra space for rest and relaxation in the open air. Additional amenities include a TV room, a playroom and a library. Parking spaces are available to guests travelling by car. Other services include a babysitting service, a childcare service, a car hire service, medical assistance, a transfer service, room service (for a fee), an alarm call service, a laundry service, a page service, a hotel doctor and a hotel shuttle bus. Complimentary newspapers are available.

Rooms

Rooms are equipped with air conditioning and individually adjustable heating. In some rooms, a terrace is included as standard. All rooms are carpeted and include a double bed. For a fee, extra beds or children's beds can be provided for little travellers. A safe, a minibar and a desk are also available. Additional features include a mini fridge and a tea/coffee station. An ironing set is provided for guests' convenience. A direct dial telephone, a television with satellite/cable channels and WiFi (no extra charge) are provided as well. Amenities provided in the rooms include slippers and a daily paper. Bathrooms are equipped with a shower, a bathtub and a bidet. A hairdryer, a vanity mirror and bathrobes are provided. For extra comfort in the bathrooms, guests are offered cosmetic products. The resort has non-smoking rooms.

Sport

Guests can taking a refreshing dip or just relax in the pool complex, which includes indoor and outdoor areas. A hot tub invites guests to soothe their muscles, and a poolside snack bar will take care of any hungry bellies. A short break or an entire afternoon on the sun terrace, which features sun loungers and parasols, is time well spent. The resort offers outdoor sports, including cycling/mountain biking, tennis, Nordic walking, fishing and horse riding or, for a fee, golf. Guests can enjoy a wide range of indoor sports, including a gym, table tennis, badminton, billiards, yoga and callisthenics. There is a wellness area with a spa, a sauna, a steam bath, a hammam, a beauty salon, spa treatments, anti-ageing treatments, a solarium, cellulite treatment and a reflexology massage and, for an additional fee, massage treatments and Ayurveda treatments.

Meals

Dining facilities include a dining room, a breakfast room, a café and a bar. A cosy atmosphere and delicious food await guests in 2 non-smoking restaurants (high chairs are available). Catering options include bed and breakfast, half board and full board. A generous breakfast buffet guarantees a great start to the day. At lunch and dinner, guests can choose between à la carte and a set menu. Diet meals, gluten-free meals and vegetarian dishes on the table will delight guests' palates. For an extra charge, the chefs will also prepare children's meals, organic food, halal food and kosher food. In addition, picnics and snacks are available. For a fee, there are also non-alcoholic beverages and alcoholic beverages.

    Outstanding hotel. Worthy of its 5* status.Beautiful, stylish hotel with stunning gardens plus access to the Palheiro gardens.Staff are exceptional and nothing is too much trouble.Rooms are tastefully decorated and of a very high standard. Lovely touch in the room was the Madeira wine and local cake.Breakfast is excellent with plenty of choice. Dinner is out of this world. The creativity and quality is sublime using local produce. Michelin star quality.Lovely pool area with sun loungers.Spa was great and offered many different treatments. Worth a visit.Highly recommend Casa Velha for a peaceful, tranquil holiday to reset yourself.I am looking forward to a third visit soon.

    It’s a beautiful place with beautiful gardens. The staff in the bar and dining room are excellent. I think it was a bit pricey for what it is. Because of the charges I think they have to be 100% and sadly they are not. The garden room we were shown was very dark and depressing, we eventually upgraded to a lovely room and paid the supplement. I reported some issues with the electrics and lamps in the room very early in our stay and was told it would be fixed, it never was. One night turn down did not replace dirty crockery so no clean cups for coffee in the morning and another night they did not replenish toilet paper - fairly basic stuff in my opinion. We had a lovely dinner in Oxalis which was beautifully prepared and presented but not worth three times the price of other restaurants in town. The golf course is challenging and pretty. The golf club bar and restaurant are excellent and the staff very friendly.
