    Disappointment

    rating15 Apr 2026

We stayed at this hotel from March 28 to April 11, 2026, and unfortunately, it was a very disappointing experience that does not live up to its advertised rating.Although the hotel is presented as a 5-star property, the reality is far from it. The overall condition and cleanliness were poor. Carpets and bathrooms were not properly cleaned, and the hotel generally felt neglected. The indoor pool was in particularly bad shape, with missing tiles and loose or damaged elements, which even posed a safety risk. The food quality was another major issue. While breakfast was acceptable, the dinner buffet was far below expectations in both variety and quality. This level of dining would be more appropriate for a 3-star hotel at best. The dining area itself was also disappointing, with dirty tables and chairs and worn-out furniture. The so-called à la carte restaurant is essentially just part of the buffet area, offering mostly the same food at much higher prices. The staff was friendly, but overall seemed unmotivated, which reflected the general atmosphere of the hotel.Overall, this hotel was a major disappointment and does not meet the standards it claims. We would not recommend it and would not stay here again.

    More like a 3-star......

    rating08 Apr 2026

Stayed here for 6 nights in a Master Suite (1001). The Suite was lovely, with a fabulous deck area, but unfortunately due to mostly wet weather we were unable to use/enjoy it, so it felt like a complete waste of money, but this isn't the hotel's fault. The room itself had all the facilities we expected, but there were a few small issues such as a cracked glass and a broken light. Cleanliness was good. There were a couple of nights when noise from neighbouring hotels/ venues was a bit loud, but again, not really something the hotel can control. We did occasionally get food smells, which we think was to do with a vent exiting near our balcony. We didn't find the bed very comfortable, and the pillows especially; we asked for softer ones, but they took a couple of days to arrive. We also asked for some fresh milk for tea, but this never arrived. We requested both of these from reception, so something went awry with both those requests. Staff on reception varied from being really pleasant and helpful to rather ineffective. We felt the hotel had no atmosphere, feeling mostly like a motorway service station, particularly at breakfast. The waffles were inedible, and many of the hot breakfast items were left 'warming' for too long, but the selection was very comprehensive. The wait staff appeared to be on a mission every day to clear everything from tables, so much so that it almost felt they were lurking behind you waiting for you to put cutlery down, which was very annoying.Due to the poor weather, none of the outdoor areas were in use most of our stay. Used the outdoor pool on the final day; a bit on the chilly side, but far better than the indoor one which was rammed and full of shrieking children the couple of times we went - the one jacuzzi was just constantly full so we weren't able to use it.The location is good, with walks into both the Old Town and Camara de Lobos doable from the hotel, albeit coming back from the Old Town is fairly hard work being uphill nearly all the way. Plenty of nice restaurants within a couple of blocks of the hotel. We didn't try either of the hotel's restaurants as the menus didn't appeal, and the a la carte restaurant was just an extension of the main buffet restaurant/ breakfast area,Parking is convenient, but the car park was very full all the time we were there, so much so that we thought we were going to have to park elsewhere on a couple of occasions, but luckily someone left each time. All these issues were discussed with hotel management on departure. Overall the weather really didn't help our trip, but I suspect we'd try a different hotel if we were to return to the island.

Inconvenient location, rooms o.k. but not great, staff somewhat helpful, included breakfast buffet was really good.

    rating27 Mar 2026

We stayed in the Melia for 6 nights, mostly as part of a Road Scholar tour group. The hotel is somewhat distant from downtown Funchal, but accessible by bus or taxi. The included breakfast buffet was really good and diverse. The room was a bit crammed with furniture, and the bathroom had a shower that easily leaked water on the floor. I couldn't find an electric outlet near the sink, to recharge my shaver. The balcony was pleasant, but the weather didn't allow its use much. The front desk staff was moderately helpful. If I could give this hotel 6 stars I would!

    rating27 Mar 2026

This is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in! I stayed in room number 537 and everything about the room was perfect! Stunning view of the sea, good air conditioning, comfy beds and large bath. We booked half board and the food was excellent, I especially liked having fresh pancakes made every morning just how I liked it! My Mother and I had been in Madeira less than 24 hours before my Mother unfortunately tripped on a step in the lido area near a shop. She was immediately transported by ambulance to the nearest hospital. My Mother suffered a fractured hip and needed surgery. The evening of her fall she was transferred to a private hospital for the rest of her stay in Madeira. The hotel let me stay on another week in the same room on my own at a reduced price. The manageress Tina invited me into her office to discuss what the hotel could do for us. She kindly sent fruit and chocolates to the room the moment she heard about the accident. Everyone in this hotel is an asset, I don’t feel the need to name anyone because they are ALL good from the house keepers to the reception and restaurant staff. They all regularly asked how my Mother was doing. Today the hotel celebrates it’s 17th birthday and I hope it continues to do well because it deserves to. I am going home now with my Mother and am relieved it was this hotel I chose to stay in as it helped me through a very difficult time. Great first time visit.

Really enjoyed our stay. We had a terrific unobstructed ocean view. Our room was very spacious. Service staff were very friendly and breakfast had a great deal of variety. We also used the spa services and they were also good. My only feedback is that some carpets in the hallways could be refreshed or replaced. Also convenient to restaurants.
