Location

The beach is only 200 m away from this luxury hotel. Situated on the cliff of Ponta de Cruz somewhat outside Funchal, the hotel affords wonderful views. The town centre is 3 km away. Links to the public transport network lie just 50 m away, whilst restaurants and shops may be found within 100 m of the hotel. The airport is approximately a 35-minute drive away.

Facility

177 non-smoking rooms are located on 7 storeys and can be reached by lift. Multilingual staff (English, German, French) at the reception desk in the lobby are ready to assist you with check-in and check-out. Amenities include a safe and a currency exchange service. Wireless internet access is provided in public areas. The tour desk offers assistance with booking excursions. The hotel offers various facilities for guests with disabilities. Wheelchair-accessible facilities are available. There are a number of shops, including a souvenir shop. The grounds of the hotel feature a playground and a lovely garden. Additional amenities include a newspaper stand, a playroom and a library. Guests arriving by car can park their vehicles in the car park for a fee. Rooms

Air conditioning and central heating ensure that rooms maintain comfortable temperatures. Guests can relax and enjoy the sea views from the balcony or private terrace of some rooms. All rooms are carpeted and have a double bed, a queen-size bed or a king-size bed. A safe and a minibar are also available. Guests will also find a tea/coffee station included among the standard features. A direct dial telephone, a television with satellite/cable channels, a radio, an alarm clock and WiFi (no extra charge) provide all the essentials for a comfortable holiday. Guests will also find slippers in their rooms. A hairdryer and bathrobes are provided in the bathrooms, which include a shower and a bathtub. While the adults swim a few laps in the outdoor pool, children can enjoy splashing about in their own swimming area. Sun loungers and parasols on the sun terrace create a perfect space for guests to relax and unwind. Those who wish to stay active while on holiday can enjoy on-site tennis. For a fee, cycling/mountain biking is also available. Water sports available at the hotel include sailing, diving, water aerobics and aquafit. Meals

The dining area includes a restaurant and a bar. Half board can be booked. A delicious and varied buffet is prepared for breakfast and lunch every day, and a set menu can be ordered at dinner. Diet meals, gluten-free meals and vegetarian dishes can be prepared on request. The hotel also offers special catering options. The hotel offers a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

    We had 7 nights here for my 60th birthday absolutely loved this well kept and well run hotel the views were incredible from our superior sea view room well equipped and very spacious the food was great and the gardens are beautiful as were the plants around the hotel! The reception staff were very helpful and a credit to Pestana! We will definitely be back! Claire and Mark Whistler

    Lovely hotel, but evening food could be better

    We stayed at this hotel in Madeira to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The hotel itself is very attractive, with beautifully maintained gardens, lovely seating areas throughout, and a spacious bedroom with a stunning sea view. On arrival we were greeted with a bottle of bubbly, chocolates, and a balloon, which was a really thoughtful and much‑appreciated touch. The staff overall were very good, friendly, and welcoming.That said, while the hotel has many positive aspects, we did feel somewhat “cocooned” during our stay, and unfortunately the food offering let the experience down. The hotel has a buffet restaurant and three speciality restaurants, but these were not all open at the same time, limiting choice. We tried two of them: the Moroccan‑style restaurant was very good and enjoyable, but the Italian restaurant was below par. The steak was so poor that I couldn’t eat it, which was disappointing for a hotel that advertises itself as five‑star.The evening buffet was very inconsistent and, overall, below average. So much so that we chose to eat out on several nights, which was a shame because breakfast was actually very good, with plenty of variety and well presented. Improving the quality and consistency of the evening buffet would, in our opinion, make a significant difference to the hotel and help it live up to its five‑star rating. As it stands, we would rate it closer to a three‑star experience overall.One additional area for improvement would be the bar service. The waiting staff in the bar area could be more active with walkrounds. It felt like a missed opportunity, as more attentive service would almost certainly lead to increased drink sales and a better guest experience.In summary, this is a lovely hotel with great views, well‑kept grounds, comfortable rooms, and attentive staff, but some relatively small tweaks—particularly around food quality and bar service—could greatly improve the overall experience and bring it more in line with its advertised rating.     Very disappointing and no way a 5 Star Hotel

    Just returned from 10 days staying at The Pestana Grand Hotel with my Husband.The room was clean and spacious, great location backing onto the promenade along the sea front. Takes about 50 minutes to walk into Funchal.But the Food, Water cost and Service charge really lets this hotel down.It’s not a 5 star Hotel, more 2-3 star at best.You have to pay for Water regardless at 4.50 euros for 500ml, Just shocking. Added to this and everything you purchase in Food and Beverage has a standard service change of 12% on top of the cost.We booked Full board. The Breakfast options were very poor, No healthy cereal or plain yogurt options.Hot food very basic with long queues in a small hot plate area. The coffee was like bitter sludge, as its a powder based form and preserves came in a pump machine format (which was sugary liquid). Dinner selection was extremely poor, with lukewarm options and again lots of queuing. We ended up eating out every evening as it was very poor quality.
