Location

This historical country house hotel is situated in the picturesque village of Santo da Serra. The establishment is surrounded by laurisilva forests - which have been a designated UNESCO World Heritage since 1999 - where some of the island's most beautiful levadas and veredas can be found. The centre of Santa Cruz can be reached in around 10 min by car, whilst Funchal is approximately 25 km away. Madeira Airport is approximately 10 km from the accommodation.

Facility

The holiday apartments were built in 1920. The hotel has a lift and features 22 non-smoking rooms. English-speaking staff at the reception desk in the lobby are happy to answer any questions. Amenities include a baggage storage service and a safe. Wireless internet access in public areas allows guests to stay connected. The tour desk offers assistance with booking excursions. A garden provides extra space for rest and relaxation in the open air. Additional amenities include a TV room and a library. Guests arriving by car can park their vehicles in the garage (for a fee) or in the car park. Further services and facilities include a car hire service, room service and a laundry service. Active guests can make use of the bicycle hire service to explore the surrounding area.

Rooms

Rooms are equipped with air conditioning and central heating. Guests can enjoy the garden view from a balcony or terrace. All rooms are carpeted and include a double bed or a queen-size bed. Extra beds can be requested. A safe and a desk are also available. Guests will also find a tea/coffee station included among the standard features. A direct dial telephone, a television with satellite/cable channels, a radio and WiFi (no extra charge) ensure optimal comfort. A hairdryer, a vanity mirror, bathrobes and a telephone are on hand in the bathrooms for everyday use. As a special convenience in the bathrooms, guests are offered cosmetic products.

Sport

Going for a swim at the pool complex, which includes indoor and outdoor areas, is a great way to relax. Guests can relax and enjoy the sun loungers and parasols provided. For sports enthusiasts who wish to work out indoors, a gym is available for a fee. Various wellness options are available at the hotel, including a spa, a sauna, a steam bath and massage treatments.

Meals

The hotel includes a restaurant and a bar. Catering options include bed and breakfast and half board. A generous breakfast buffet and a set dinner menu are served every day. Staff are also happy to provide children's meals. The hotel offers a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Nice small and relax hotel with good breakfast and dinner. We highly recommend the hotel. The hotel is situated at a very high altitude and is a great starting point for hikes. Highly recommend the Portobay Serra

Highly recommend this delightful calm and peaceful hotel with good facilities, an excellent helpful staff team, set in beautiful countryside away from the main tourist areas, but close to a small area with good places to eat, great coffee and local mini supermarkets to collect supplies for picnics. An ideal location for anyone seeking to unwind and breathe in beautiful aromas of the fabulous trees and beautiful vegetation. We had a wonderful 6 days at the Portobay Serra. This was our first visit to Madeira, which is a really wonderful place with remarkable range of environments from the crashing waves of the Atlantic to the majesty of volcanic formed mountains and extradordinary range of vegetations from sub tropical to alpine. We loved it! Nice place and mostly friendly personal. However, the hotel is a bit isolated. The cleaning of the rooms was not perfect. Breakfast was good, but dinner varied in quality. There is no bar and there is no selling of snacks. The gym needs updating. However, the pool and sauna were appreciated. Located next to the hotel is a farm with hens and a couple of roosters that woke us up every morning.
