Very good option in central Funchal

    rating28 Mar 2026

Positives - great central location, clean and well equipped rooms, exceptionally friendly and helpful staff (particularly reception), value for money and a decent breakfast.Areas for improvement - we found the noise early in the morning and late at night an issue, breakfast staff seemed either under-staffed or maybe add some more equipment to help them (extra toaster, double up on milk stations etc), evening restaurant never had any guests in the seven nights we were there - couldn't find a menu online or on display at the hotel which was a bit weird Monica Freitas, General Manager at The Editory Garden Funchal, responded to this review Dear Guest,Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are delighted to know you enjoyed our central location, the cleanliness and amenities of our rooms, the warm assistance from our reception team, the value for money, and the quality of breakfast. We are sorry to learn that aspects of your stay did not meet expectations. Our aim is to provide a restful environment and seamless dining experiences, and we appreciate your comments regarding noise, breakfast flow, and the availability of restaurant information.Your observations are invaluable in reinforcing our commitment to attentive service and guest comfort. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again for a stay that reflects the high standards we strive to deliver.Best regards,Mónica Freitas - Manager

Amazing “small” almost family hotel, but with all big hotel facilities.

    rating28 Feb 2026

Having been to the hotel last year, we rebooked for February this year. The hotel has been totally refurbished completely re-wired and re-plumbed over the winter. Grand opening while we were there. Sorry to see the “Sleeping withe the stars” murals and old sepia photographs of Madeira gone. The rooms now “modern bland”. The new toilet bowls designed for short legged people so taller or less flexible guests could benefit from a seat raiser or pull up handle. The ‘ double beds’ were actually two singles pushed together with two separate linens so no fighting over covers. One the plus side all rooms have a small electric kettle, tea and coffee: a room safe and USB and USC sockets. Staff fantastic. Slightly over-worked breakfast staff multi-tasking replenishing foodstuffs, clearing tables, checking in guest to room. Small layout dishes meant constant ‘topping up’, also delays at annoying multi function beverage machines. Food very fresh and good,(except is scrambled egg ex-powdered egg?)Pointless and distracting lit panel by reception. Also health clinic short distance away has large bright information board which flashes into a few rooms all night. Road outside slopes in direction of one way traffic so very little noise.Review may initially sound negative but overall we would definitely recommend this small, quiet hotel and would go back. Easy walk to town, (even for crusties), 10 mins to the market, shops, numerous restaurants and amazingly cheap bus service.

    Great location, good hotel

    rating24 Feb 2026

We stayed here as part of a package purchased through a travel company, so we had no say in where we were staying - but we were satisfied with this hotel. The location is great, a short walk from the historic district and waterfront area. The rooms are small and the bathrooms are really small. But the bed was very comfortable and the room and bathroom were clean. The pool area was nice and the exercise room was small but not very busy and had good options. The AC worked great. The pipes in the room above us were kinda noisy, but fortunately that didn't bother us too much. The breakfast was adequate - fresh fruit, fresh pastries, mediocre scrambled eggs.We had an early flight our last day and had to leave before breakfast. We asked if we could get a bag of food for breakfast that day - they went above and beyond and opened the breakfast area for us with limited options, but still more than we expected.Staff members were very friendly. Monica Freitas, General Manager at The Editory Garden Funchal, responded to this review Thank you very much for taking the time to share such a detailed review. We are pleased to know that, despite having no choice in the hotel selection, you were satisfied with your stay and appreciated our central location, cleanliness, comfort of the bed, pool area, gym, and the friendliness of our team.We also thank you for your understanding regarding the size of the rooms and bathrooms, as well as the occasional noise from the plumbing. Your comments help us identify areas where we can continue to improve. We are especially glad to hear that our team was able to assist you on your early departure day and exceed your expectations by opening the breakfast area for you — this is exactly the level of service we strive to provide. It would be a pleasure to welcome you again in the future and offer you an even better experience.

    Great Hotel in Great Location

    rating24 Feb 2026

The Editory Garden Hotel was formerly known as The Hotel Do Carmo. We have visited the Hotel Carmo twice before and really enjoyed our stays. The staff are wonderful. The Hotel has been completely renovated to a very good standard, and the wonderful staff remain. Nadja and her team are superb. The Hotel is now fresh and bright. It is in a great location close to the Market and a short walk to the old town which is full of restaurants. The whole of Funchal is walkable (if you stay on the lower neighbourhoods), and the Centre, Cathedral, Harbour and old town are easily accessed from the Hotel. The Hotel is rated at 3 stars but we think it is probably better than most. Breakfast is very good. We think this hotel is very good value. We will definitely return.
