    Disappointing 4-star hotel

    rating16 May 2026

Positive aspects: hotel close to the city centre and to most tourist attractions; quiet hotelNeutral aspects: room was OK, breakfast was barely OK, staff were OK.Negative aspects: beds were very short and narrow; poor insulation from outside noise; wall painting was peeling at one corner; uncomfortable shower-in-tub with a curtain that sticked to your body; stale smelling bathroom towels; no coffee/tea making facilities in the room; no electric sockets at the desk (I needed to disconnect one of the bedside lamps to recharge my phone...); no green activities in place. In short: you pay the price of a full 4-star hotel, and you get the services of a lower-than-average 3-star hotel.

    Tired but good location

    rating18 Feb 2026

We had read previous reviews so kind of knew what to expect this is my feedback. We stayed in 102 and 104, noise from the loose road grid outside was awful! It is a very busy road. Internet/wifi dropped out at random times, annoying when trying to listen to the radio to block out road noise. They still need to put kettles and tea/coffee facilities in the rooms. The rooms were really clean but shabby, the sheets did not fit the beds. The towels were very worn out. The wardrobe doors did not stay closed. The noise from reception carried up to the first floor and funnelled in 104 so from 6.30am onwards you can hear chattering and in and evening all the lounge noise.Smokers use the internal balcony but the smoke blows into the building and rooms nearby. They could have moved one of us to another room but not both of us! Breakfast, needs bigger cups and glasses. NEW toaster needed only toasts one side at a time! Pool area, needs new grass and a good clean. A couple of bins would help. However, it has a good location, easy access to everything in Funchal. The cable car in Funchal is not running until 6th April 2026. The cable car in Monte to the Botanical garden is running.

    One bad Manager

    rating27 Feb 2025

My girl friend and I have just arrived home after a week on Madeira staying at The Windsor Hotel in Funchal. I will start with my complaint as not to end on a sour note. Our first morning we came down to what looked like a good, standard breakfest. breads, meats, cheeses, vegies, cereals, milk, coffes, juices and a hot plate with scrambled eggs, weiners, (processed) bacon and baked beans....BUT the food on the hot plate was cold. Have you ever tryed cold eggs, bacon and beans???Next morning after being served cold food again, I complained about it at the receptionist counter. She said she would make the restaurant manager, Poulo, aware of the matter. We went up to get ready for our day out and when we came by the receptionist, she told me the manager wished to speak to me. Before I could speak, Poulo confronted me in a very erogent and condescending maner. I felt like a school boy being scolded by his teacher. He continued to explain to me that Portugal Cuisine mandated that the food on the hot plate be 22 degrees celsius for our own good health and well being and that he had measured the temprature of the food and it was 24 degrees and further more that the water in the hot plate was 65 degrees???? OK, why is the food cold if the water is 65 degrees? ”Generally, temperatures above 149°F (65°C) are effective in destroying most bacteria, while temperatures above 165°F (74°C) are even better and can eliminate a wider range of potentially harmful bacteria.” (you might get sick with less heat?)Not to get mad or in an argument I left him without a comment. Next morning I desided to try the hot food one more time....Still cold, but with one more complaint. There was fish in the scrambled eggs and no sign stating the fact. I know people that are strongly allergic to fish and I do complain in the strongest that there was no sign informing you of fish mixed in the food.... ” Fish allergy is an immune hypersensitivity to proteins found in fish. Symptoms can be either rapid or gradual in onset. The latter can take hours to days to appear. The former may include anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening condition which requires treatment with epinephrine. Other presentations may include atopic dermatitis or inflammation of the esophagus.”Now all of the positive......In all the years of traveling, I can not remember receiving a better sevice, before, during and after, our trip to Madeira with BEST TRAVEL and not to forget Jens Paulsen, our amazing quide and alle the poeple, except the restaurant manager Poulo, we met along our way. The Hotel is old and has not recently received up dates, but clean This is our second time on Madeira and very happy to say, the second time we have had Jens Poulsen as our guide. If we could be sure to have Jens as our guide, we might even consider a trip to Portugal. Next years. I am copying this and sending to Best Travel, Tripadvicer and The Windsor Hotek Group.I hope you will respond personaly to me pertaining to this reveiw?nielsrold@gmail.com

    Back again

    rating17 Dec 2024

Back to hotel Windsor for the 10th time. And there were som great changes. The breakfast room have had a much needed renovation, and is now at great room with a nice atmosphere and nice breakfast. The lobby is now also brought up to a very nice standard. The staff at hotel Windsor were allmost the same as the years before. Very nice, helpful, friendly and professional at all times. The hotel is situated at the best place in Funchal. Within walking distance of all attractions, activities, restaurants and bars. The hotel is also close to busstops and the bus terminal to the rest of the island.Anything missing? the hotel is build without balconys and the wiew is to the neigbours, so you have to go to the top of the building where the swimming pool and the pool bar is situated. There is also a great wiew over the city and the mountains. So one star up from last time. You are doing great.

    Rude receiptionist

    rating04 Mar 2024

The little old lady at the reception of this hotel is the rudest receptionist I've ever encountered. I popped in there to check availability and prices. She talked down to me, was loud and condescending, and kept talking over me. Quite frankly I was shocked with the level of the rudeness - she was horrible! There is one thing I am grateful for though, her horribleness made sure I ensuring that I would not want to stay there even for the best of prices!
