    Consistently bad

    rating29 May 2026

We stayed here a few years ago while walking the Camino and had a poor experience but decided to give them another try. Unfortunately after 3 years the same issues exist and seem to have got worse. We ordered the air conditioned family room to get the view and space. Unfortunately there was no air conditioning except for a brief few moments in the evening when it blew some warm air around. We had to sleep with doors to the balcony open but then had to try to sleep with the light from the beach floodlights and the noise of the ocean, this is not a gentle wave sound but a roar. We then went to breakfast as it opened at 7 as we needed an early start. Very busy even at 7. Waited in a line for the coffee machine only to discover that it didn’t dispense milk in the coffee. I wanted a high protein cooked breakfast so lined up for the cooked food. By the time I reached the front of the line only some rubbery eggs left, bacon etc empty. We waited 45 minutes but still no refills. We had to meet a deadline for luggage collection so left after a small black coffee and a pot of yogurt. So overall a bad experience. Don’t book this overcrowded and underserved Hotel.

    Disappointing

    rating10 Sept 2025

Although the location of the property was great, the room and facilities were definitely not worth the cost or a 4 star rating. The carpet in our room was badly stained, the tile grout in the shower had mildew, they only supplied a cheap/generic combination soap for shampoo/conditioner/shower gel, The tennis courts were dirty and had weeds. The only positive thing was the that the staff that we interacted with were friendly and helpful.

Unsatisfactory - a week was too long.

    rating03 Oct 2024

We stayed 7 nights half board. In summary:Food overall - it is cafeteria style and quality, so be prepared to queue, and be disappointed. Also the waiting staff were generally unfriendly.Breakfast - hot dishes were always tepid at best, so thank goodness for the 1x microwave. The continental / cereals / fruit was much better. However the different milk options were not labelled properly - very serious if you have allergies or vegan.Dinner - bedlam, and consistently poor quality. It doesn’t open until 7:30pm, and again the food was tepid, only 2 choices of main, no vegetarian or vegan options apart from a salad bar. Last comment - be prepared to queue (again) when you leave, as no facility to put on the room bill.General decor - bring a miners hat + lamp combo as lighting is dismal throughout, and not helped by brown carpet, walls and ceilings.Bedrooms - decent size, always clean, though we’d recommend getting a room with balcony + sea view, otherwise you’ll look onto car parks and apartment blocks.Outdoor pool - unheated but seemed clean, with plenty of sunbeds. A small kiddy pool and play equipment nearby for the kids.Warning - you have to pay for the the indoor pool.Seemed a nice beach immediately outside the hotel, but Povoa itself is not a traditional holiday destination I.e. apartment blocks, offices, not a lot going on.The one thing we couldn’t fault was the Reception staff - always friendly and helpful.

A Reasonable Hotel - But Beware of the Ongoing Quirks

    rating22 Sept 2024

The hotel is situated on the beach with access via a gate. It is about 20 minutes walk from the main part of town, where shops, including a supermarket are found. We were told the area peaked during the timeshare boom, but when it collapsed it suffered a decline. The short term let market has reawakened it and there is building work taking place around the area. The hotel is of some size, but is perhaps a bit tired. The bedrooms are in need of refurbishment. The staff were very helpful and friendly. There were some criticisms. The first is dinner is buffet style, and starts from 7.30 pm. The mass influx of people at this time causes chaos, as you have scrabble to get to the buffet. With so many people accessing the food, it means hot food quickly gets cold. Whilst tea/ coffee is available with breakfast, there is no option with the dinner. You have to buy it from the bar. The bar area by the Restaurant is only manned by one person, and you struggle to get served in a reasonable time. The last point is there are tea/ coffee facilities in each room, but there is no milk. If you want milk, you have to buy it at the bar, or from the little shop in the hotel's foyer.

Certainly not a four star hotel. Stay here at you peril.

This hotel should not be recommended in any way for anything other than a transite hotel similar to a holiday inn.We were located at this hotel as part of a Newmarket Hidden Portugal holiday, I can honestly say it is the noisist hotel room I have stayed in the wind howling through ill fitting wind (At the back of the hotel no balcony)The food was poor with no labels to inform the guests what was being offered.I do not normally write reviews, but I feel so strongly about how bad this hotel is, I felt I need to let others no that you should not come here.
