Our second stay at this beautiful historic family home

    rating18 Oct 2025

This was our second stay at Casa da Portela de Sampriz and we enjoyed it like the first time here! Thanks to the history of the place, its outstanding renovation, the nice setting in the landscape, the excellent interior and exterior - and the hospitality of Leonor and Alberto, this was again one of the most remarkable stays of our trip through the North of Portugal. The rooms are delicately furnished with historic furniture and equipped at a very high standard. We felt immediately at home and enchanted, not at last in the common room among the old granite walls of the former winery's basement. In the morning, Leonor makes sure that you cannot leave without having tasted the many little treats of a Portuguese breakfast including home baked cake while enjoying the historic charm of the large breakfast room. The place is perfectly located next to the Peneda-Geres National Park and Alberto will not fail to recommend routes, sights, and restaurants. Upon return, enjoy a bottle of refreshing local Vinho Verde at the pool as well as a gorgeous sunset over the hilly country of the Lima river. As after the first time, we have a personal pledge to return ... and we are hopeful to do so :)

Gorgeous Country Home Near Peneda National Park

    rating25 Aug 2023

This gorgeous mansion is a wonderful place to stay to enjoy all that northern Portugal has to offer. You can enjoy the many picturesque villages and monasteries. It is the perfect place to stay to enjoy hikes in Penedes Geres National Park, especially the beautiful Ecovia trail from Sistelo. At the end of the day, enjoy a swim in the luxurious pool with vistas of farms ABS vineyards. The breakfast is excellent. Elizabeth, the chef and housekeeper is warm and friendly and very attentive to guest needs. The owners are justifiably proud of the 20 generations that their family have been stewards of this lovely home and its lands. The nearby village of Ponte da Barca has several nice restaurants and walks along the river.Highly recommended!

    Sublime and memorable

    rating12 Oct 2018

The Casa da Portela de Sampriz was more than we could hope for. Situated just outside of Penedes- Geres National Park, we were surround by amazing natural beauty. The Casa da Portela looked out upon incredible views. The manor is beautiful, authentic, decorated with pieces that have served generations. The rooms honor the past while creating a sense of serenity and calm with modern comforts. The hostess provided us with wonderful recommendations and great maps for hiking. Our walks were filled with great appreciation of the beauty of the area. As I am nervous on small roads at night, we would enjoy an evening snack (our own) with one of the wines they provided. There is a wonderful gathering room where one can play games (we did), chat, or watch TV. One evening we were able to arrange dinner on site. The kindness of the owner and the attention by the staff given to every detail make this memorable. Had we known how amazing this would be we would have booked 4 nights instead of three. We were so very sad to leave and cannot imagine anything living up to this experience.

    Beautiful Casa

    rating09 Jul 2018

We are always looking for unique places where to say, and this is one beautiful casa. The owners were very hospitable and we got useful information of National Park routes and restaurants nearby. The village Sampriz is about 10 mins drive from Ponte de Barca where all nearest restaurants are. Village's church above the Casa and the Ruínas do Castelo da Nóbrega were one beautiful spot in the village. Due to rainy and very foggy weather visits to National Park were not successful and could not enjoy the beautifully laid swimming pool area either, pity.First room we got was very large and beautiful, but probably due rainy weeks it was a bit damp and after first night we got another room without that feeling. Otherwise the rooms are perfectly clean and kept that way throughout our stay. Outside the rooms there is large sitting area for guests. Breakfast has everything you needed.Would really like to see this Casa again with sunshine and enjoy the pool area, maybe some day?

    What an amazing place

    rating23 Oct 2017

Thanks to the history of the place, its outstanding renovation, the nice setting in the landscape, the excellent interior and exterior - and the hospitality of Leonor and Alberto, this was one of the most remarkable stays of our trip through the North of Portugal.Upon ringing the bell at the big wooden gate of the property, Leonor and Alberto take you into the historic walls of their old family property. Our stay started with a very kind introduction to the house and its historic structures by Alberto. The rooms are equipped at a very high standard and you feel immediately at home and enchanted, not at last in the common room among the old granite walls of the former winery's basement. In the morning, Leonor makes sure that you cannot leave without having tasted the many little treats of a Portuguese breakfast including home baked cake. We just stayed for two nights ... having wished that we had planned for more. We have a personal pledge to return!
