    Wonderful get-away-from-it-all property

    rating03 Aug 2019

An hour's drive from Porto airport and tucked away up in the hills beyond Braga this unique property sleeps 10 comfortably in 5 double rooms. A converted farm building it now contains the bedrooms, a dining room, a games room, a large well equipped kitchen, a large sitting room, a breakfast room, small kitchen and terrace. Two of the rooms are in an annexe to the rear of the main house in front of the two terraced lawns and the well proportioned swimming pool. What do you need to know?* There is wif-fi but it can be temperamental. This is entirely due to the location of the village rather than the facilities on site.* There is plenty of space for parking but your car needs to be no more than 1.8m wide to get through the gate.* The town of Pavóa de Lanhoso is a 15 minute drive and has supermarkets, petrol stations, bars and restaurants. There are two petrol stations within 10 minutes of the village.* Guimaraes is nearby and worth a visit for the old town and the castle. In the National Park there are water sports at Geres on the Cavado River which are well managed and great fun.

A very good place with gardens and a good pool.

The rooms near the pool are with great windows to the garden and the pool. The other rooms are in the interior of the mayor house, that have tree living rooms and a big balcony. Have a car park in the interior of the propriety.

    Summer holiday 2015

    rating30 Aug 2015

Flew into Porto and picked up hire car and set off on the one hour and fifteen minute drive, north east. To find Casa de Alfena you will need a sat nav or you will get lost ! So the new TomTom complete with up to date maps was one of the best investments I had made in ages. Arrived at around 22:30 hrs, so was dark and couldn't see much which made it really nice in the morning to take in the views of the over hanging grape vines and huge orange trees, over flowing with fruit. Fantastic house and friends had the other property a stones throw away. The house is huge compared to the average English house, loads of walking to get around. The only downside was the large kitchen was located downstairs on the ground floor. The small kitchenette upstairs was only adequate for small stuff etc. The lovely owner lived in a massive house just a short walk behind Alfena, always very helpful, providing plenty of oranges straight off the trees for breakfast juice. Nice gardens etc with a really nice pool. One warning, if you are driving anything larger than a standard size saloon car, ie Galaxy kind of size or larger you may not be able to get through the large gates into the property grounds.Would recommend this as a great place for family and friends to take over the whole place.

To have a great Portuguese experience

    rating23 Sept 2012

Although it wasn't easy to find (a gps is nescessary), the location in itself was great : a small little town in the Portuguese mountain scene, just as we expected it to be.For a short while it looked as if no one was expecting us, but soon a nice old lady welcomed us.Through our stay she helped us with some tips (food and restaurants) and one day her daughter gave us a free look into the goldmuseum next door (which is owned by them). The road to Guimaraes isn't that nice, circleling round through the mountains but that is why we were in Northern Portugal for.The rooms were very modernised, large and well-equipped. The swimmingpool nice to have (but it was too cold to use). Breakfast was fresh and well-served.
