    wonderful stay

    rating05 Jul 2014

We had a wonderful stay here in June. We stayed 4 nights in suite do lago which was a very large room with our own living room including a lovely fire place, bathroom and balcony with a view of the wine fields. We were the only guests so we had the beautiful breakfast room to our selves. It was the best breakfast we had during our trip and made you feel very welcome. The house looks like an old manor house and if filled with beautiful old furniture, paintings etc. It is surrounded by lovely gardens and we also enjoyed the pool table. Parking is not a problem as they have ample parking space. It is located not far from the highway so you can be on your way on a day trip to for example Guimaraes, Citania de briteiros, Braga very quickly. The recommend restaurant Paco in nearby arco de baulhe was really worth it. Unfortunately we could not use the pool during our stay due to the weather (too cold) but it looked lovely. Only thing to improve is replacing the towels during your stay and maybe some tips on what else is there to do in the surroundings.

    Wonderfully atmospheric

While Casa de Canedo might be a bit out of the way for many people touring northern Portugal, it is very well worth a detour. Here is a wonderful old mansion house steeped in history and full of antiques and objects d'art. There is so much to see and absorb from the small chapel to the old kitchen and beautiful courtyards. The rooms are very comfortable and have all the mod cons. The breakfasts are to die for - quite the best we have had in our several tours of Portugal. Gloria, the housekeeper, is very helpful and nothing is too much trouble. If you are feeling energetic there is a small swimming pool nestled in the Casa's colourful gardens. And a badminton net. The WIFI works well. While we did not have dinner at the Casa, it is possible to do so by prior arrangement which might be a good idea as there are few restaurants in the vicinity. Casa de Canedo is a word.......unmissable!

A perfect taste of northern Portugal

A beautiful manor house surrounded by gardens and vineyards, evocative of earlier times with wood fires burning in the dining area with a fireplace large enough to walk into.....beautiful rooms, immaculate linens, thoughtful touches like a jug of water and fresh fruit in the afternoon,,,,a delicious breakfast.....all these things make this a wonderful place to stay, crowned by the graciousness of the house manager, Gloria (and her dog Bijou, who escorted us everywhere around the property). The weather did not cooperate for us to use the pool or badminton court, but we ate at the recommended restaurant, O Caneiro, in a nearby town and it was one of our best meals in Portugal, which is saying alot since we found the food there to be uniformly delicious, not to mention reasonable. I would highly recommend this home....when we were there we had the entire house to ourselves, so it felt as though we had our own country home in Portugal!

    There casa is your casa

Just returned from a three night stay at this manor house in Basto de Canedo. My mother, a friend, and I found the place to be extremely charming... exactly what you would hope for in a somewhat rural, very old Portuguese manor house. We would highly recommend it. The touches that we most appreciated were:1. The offer by the manager to move one of us (who was going to sleep on the sofa bed) to a separate adjacent (and beautiful) room since it wasn't occupied, while still paying for the single room only. The rooms were spotless and cleaned daily. 2. Access to the kitchen/fridge to store and prepare some small nightly meals of cheese, sausage, bread, fruit and vinho verde wine made from grapes at their vineyards (cost of bottle of wine: 2.50 euros) 3. The bowl of fresh fruit and water that was left in our room the second night we arrived. In addition to these specific things, the continental breakfast was amazing and served in a dining room filled with things I'd love to own. We ordered dinner there one night and it also was very yummy and very traditional. The woman manager, who has lived there for 12 years with her family, was extremely helpful but also not overbearing. In the end, we had such a pleasant experience that the one day, we opted to stay poolside rather than going out driving. Note: The only downside is that the casa does not take credit cards, and it was only because we had not realized it until we went to pay the bill that we then had to find an ATM last minute. You should be prepared to pay for your room either in cash or with a check from a Portuguese bank account. In sum, many, many thumbs up for a hidden gem!

    Two Wonderful Nights

    rating11 Apr 2005

I spent two wonderful nights at Casa de Canedo while on a Backroads tour of Northern Portugal, by mini-bus. There were six of us, including our driver. Here is an excerpt from my diary: "Staying in a 17th century Country Manor House, with gardens and woods around it. Wonderful day, and wonderful dinner. Dining room situated in old kitchen, with a 'walk-in' fireplace and chimney. Dinner menu included Vegetable soup, and duck with rice and then an orange mousse. Bottles of their own 'green' wine, a white wine made from their own grapes, appeared on the table, one followed another. A Norwegian couple, who are staying here, too, joined us for dinner. Our party includes a Canadian Couple, three Australians, (a couple and myself) and our driver, British, but lives in Barcelona. The house has spacious living areas, and a library. The rooms are all on one level, and my room has a four-poster bed, antique furniture and an ensuite bathroom with a beautiful panel of azulejos on one wall." When it was time to leave I wished we could have stayed longer. The staff were very friendly and I just loved Portugal and the people.
