Probably the best stay of my life. I feel happy, recharged and would love to go back

    rating15 Jan 2026

This is - without a doubt - the perfect place to a weekend getaway if you’re ever in a need of recharging and escaping from the city chaos. From the moment we were cheerfully received by Catarina and given a facilities tour by Daniel to the lovely dinner served by Fatima and the rest of the incredible staff at À Terra and that delicious food. To the draw dropping breakfast selection, where we were happily greeted by Sr. Ribeiro - who gave us marvelous suggestions about where to go and how to spend our time in Douro… Every single person made a difference in our stay. They are all worthy of appreciation words. And the rest? The room was incredible, with an amazing view to the Douro River; The food was absolutely delicious, made with local products. (I’m still dreaming about the covert. That’s right. The covert.) The gardens and trails around and within the property were very pleasant to walk through, …And lastly, I could not end my review without mentioning how incredible pet friendly they are. I brought my frenchie with us and she couldn’t possibly have been more well treated. With a pet kit - consisting of a bed, some treats, a bowl, a toy, a diaper and poo bags - waiting for her in our room and all of the staff giving her so much attention, she was completely in heaven. Also, the À Terra restaurant is also pet friendly, which means we were able to really enjoy the stay alongside our dog!! I can’t recommend this place enough, you have to see it for yourselves!Thank you for all the amazing staff that made our experience so great. I truly hope to visit soon :) Lourenço Guimarães, Serviços ao cliente/atendimento at Octant Hotels Douro, responded to this review Hello Camila,What a joy it was to read your review — thank you so much for such a thoughtful and heartfelt account of your stay!It means the world to us to know that your time at Octant Douro was, as you put it, “probably the best stay” of your life. From the warm welcome by Catarina and Daniel’s guided tour, to the attentive service by Fátima and the team at À TERRA, and of course the delightful suggestions from Sr. Ribeiro at breakfast — we’re thrilled that every interaction contributed to making your experience so special. We’re equally delighted that you enjoyed the comfort of your room, the stunning views over the Douro River, and the culinary experience made with care and local ingredients (and yes — even the couvert!).Your kind words about our pet-friendly approach truly warmed our hearts. It’s wonderful to hear that your frenchie was pampered and welcomed just as much as you were. We believe our guests — furry friends included — deserve to feel completely at home.Thank you for your generous recommendation. It will be an absolute pleasure to welcome you back whenever you need another escape from the city.Warm regards,Lourenço GuimarãesGuest Relations Manager

Great resort, great views, nice staff, odd room decor, and some food issues

    rating10 Oct 2025

Very wonderful stay. Disappointed in the food though. GOODWe had the fullview room, and it was wonderful. Views were incredible. Having the terrace and a balcony was very cool. The resort itself was fantastic. They recently retrofited a pool to be heated which was great, but the adults only pool was just about the same temperature but not heated. We did the Octant I boat trip at sunset and that was just incredible. The family that hosted us were great, and the boat itself was very comfortable. BADHonestly, nothing, other than a few food issues.1. Room service just wasn't very good. The pizza was soggy and slightly uncooked. The rest of the food was frankly kind of gross. 2. We ate at the "fancy" restaurant one night, called Raiva. Nice setting. However, when I checked in, they asked if I had allergies. I told them I had a nut and seed allergy. When I ordered bread, one of the two types of bread that came out had seeds. So no biggy, I didn't eat it and ate the other kind. When I ordered my main, i reminded them of my allergies. Then when my pork loin came out, it was full of seeds in the sauce. At that point, I told them "sorry but this has seeds all in the sauce. Moreover, the bread had seeds as well"They brought me my food back out which took about 7 minutes, meanwhile my wife's food was either going to get cold, or would be eating without me. A restaurant of that quality and in the michelin guide, they really should have refired both. Anyways, then, after our mains, they brought out some pastries. All of the pastries they provided had seeds or nuts in them. I told the waiter, and he said "oh it's ok, it just optional pastries. You don't need to eat them", i replied "well, i'd like to. But as I've now mentioned a few times, no seeds or nuts for me please. They brought me something else instead after I insisted. I was shocked that they didn't take anything off of the bill. A total of 5 items had seeds, and I had told them a total of 4 times. I would have expected them to at least take the bread off since I was only able to eat half of it. 3. the decor of the rooms is a little weird, and could probably need some renovation. It was very sterile looking and a bit dated despite having an "Avant garde" look. It didn't really match the vibe of the hotel all that well.

    Mixed feelings

    rating20 Aug 2025

Mixed feelings about this hotel:Good: fabulous setting, architecture is incredible and all rooms all specified to the highest standards. The new “houses” have top end equipment. Better than many 5-star hotels. Service is good in that the people are nice and want you to be happy. The pool on the roof is lovely (except smoke see below)Not so good: service (although people are lovely) is incredibly slow in some cases. Three examples from within 24 hours of arriving: 1) turn down service was supposed to be at 7 pm but arrived at 930 pm when children in bed, 2) pancakes took >30 mins to arrive at breakfast, 3) room service which they schedule with you and we asked for 11 am arrived at 1:45 pm. (They sent apology fruit and cake to our room after breakfast delay)Quality of food in a terre restaurant was also only ok. Expect more from a 5-star hotel at this price. Breakfast exceptional. But dinner options are less impressive and somewhat limited. (Did not try the Michelin restaurant)Although everything is nicely finished there are teething problems in the newer “houses” - door handle fell off bathroom door. Toilet did not stop flushing. Steamer (provided in place of iron) did not work. We were literally first people staying so maybe they are fixed. They grill food by the outdoor pool but that means smoke billows over pool. They built 25 new “houses” which don’t have such good view of river. I am concerned more rooms means pools will get busy. All in all looks like 5 star hotel but not five star experienceFinally - little to do in immediate vicinity of hotel in terms of hikes etc. the boat price seems prohibitively expensive. Lourenço Guimarães, Serviços ao cliente/atendimento at Octant Hotels Douro, responded to this review Hello John,Thank you sincerely for taking the time to share such a detailed review. We truly value thoughtful feedback like yours, as it helps us refine and elevate every aspect of the experience we aim to provide. We're very pleased to hear that you appreciated the hotel's unique setting, the architecture, and the high standards of comfort in both the rooms and the new houses. It’s also great to know that you felt warmly welcomed by our team, and that you enjoyed the rooftop pool and the exceptional breakfast. That said, we regret that some aspects of your stay fell short of expectations. The delays in service — from turn-down and room service to breakfast — are not reflective of the standards we hold ourselves to. Your comments have already been shared with the relevant teams, who are actively working to improve operations, particularly in newly launched areas of the hotel. We’re sorry to hear that the dinner experience at À TERRA did not impress you in the same way as breakfast. Our goal is to ensure consistency and quality throughout every dining experience, and your feedback will support our ongoing efforts in that regard.Regarding the smoke from the grill by the outdoor pool and the views from the new houses, we understand your concerns and will take them into account when planning the guest experience and communicating more clearly with future guests. As for the lack of immediate activities nearby, we’re continuously working to expand and better present personalized recommendations and partnerships that allow our guests to enjoy the region in a more authentic and enriching way.We truly hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again, with improvements in place, and to deliver the five-star experience we strive for in every detail.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5

    rating08 Aug 2025

We usually stay farther down the river in Regua at the senses... but that is becoming too expensive and its harder to get to. We chose octant to try something different, closer to porto, at a better price. We're glad we did. This hotel is absolutely stunning. Not for people with poor mobility though. Elevators are generally slow, esp funicular. Many stairs outside to lead to the rooftop pool/lounge/restaurant area. The restaurant is the low light, table service is poor at A terra. Food is overpriced. My portuguese family was surprised they are charging 20euros for conservas. These are 1 euro cans, and are served just as an opened tin with some crackers. Food is average. The fine dining restaurant is also average and pricey. Other than the food, the rooms are spectacular, the facilities are fantastic too. Breakfast buffet is excellent, but its somewhat awkward with mix of buffet, a la carte, and paid menu items.I would definitely return. We stayed in a large 2 bedroom villa with an amazing yard with a view. We saw wildfires and wild horses from our bedrooms. The rooms are so new and beautiful. No washer dryer in room which is ok, but the room is luxuriousCar service here from the hotel is very pricey tooAll staff are attentive and kind. Being right on the river is amazing, and its great to hop on a kayak, or do a river tour. Lourenço Guimarães, Serviços ao cliente/atendimento at Octant Hotels Douro, responded to this review Hello P9224VZsamb,Thank you so much for your thoughtful and detailed review — we're very pleased to hear that you chose to explore something different with Octant Douro and that you were glad you did. It’s wonderful to know you found the hotel stunning, enjoyed the villa with its spectacular views, and appreciated the unique riverside location. Being able to enjoy the natural surroundings — wild horses, river activities, and the peaceful landscape — is indeed one of the most special parts of staying with us.We're truly grateful for your kind words about our team. Attentiveness and kindness are at the heart of what we aim to offer every guest. At the same time, thank you for your honest feedback regarding the dining experiences. Your observations about À TERRA and RAIVA are noted and appreciated — especially your comments on pricing, presentation, and service. We’re always striving to improve, and your perspective helps guide those efforts. We also hear your comments about mobility and elevator access. While the hillside setting offers incredible views, we know it can present some challenges, and we're working to ensure comfort and accessibility wherever possible. We’d be delighted to welcome you back in the future for another stay by the river, and we hope to make your next visit even more seamless and memorable.Warm regards,Lourenço GuimarãesGuest Relations Manager

    Special Place

This is truly a special place. Breakfast was delicious and we enjoyed eating at A Terra and Raiva as well. Service is personalized and dedicated. We really enjoyed the spa, which is open 24 hours and has a heated pool, sauna, and steam room - we could relax there all day. A boat ride is on our list for next time!
