  Beautiful hotel right on the banks of the river Douro.

  Beautiful hotel right on the banks of the river Douro. Room was really clean and had everything you could ask for including a couple of complimentary soft drinks in the mini fridge and some welcome cakes and port. Pool area and bar were great and had lovely views of the river. Towels are also provided by the hotel so no need to pack them. Gym area was clean and tidy.Service was superb by all staff. From the moment we checked in at reception to the moment we left. Bar, restaurant and hotel staff were all really polite and friendly. Only ate breakfast at the hotel but I couldn't complain. It had something for everyone (even a small kids section). The food was well stocked and replaced very frequently.All the rooms face the same direction so noise wasn't an issue (except for the one night where the fireworks started at the venue over the river. Nothing you can do about that). I would recommend a river view though. It is well worth any extra. Trust me, the view is worth it.   Amazing hotel

  I stayed at a four star hotel in Lisbon and a five star hotel in Albufeia during this Portugal trip, and the Porto Pestana Riverside was a distant third. For starters, the rooms have no hair conditioner and no washcloths. This is the only five star hotel I’ve stayed at in my life that don’t have these essentials. As a result, I had to Uber to a store to buy conditioner soon after checking in. Also, the housekeeping service was really spotty. Two hand towels (as one would expect) the first day, then only one hand towel the next day, then no hand towels the next day. Also, my room didn’t get cleaned at all one day.I chose this hotel in large part because they had a laundry service. However, upon checking into my room I learned that this hotel considers “normal” laundry service to be that they get 48 hours to give you the clothes back. If you want what truly is, in the hotel industry, the “normal” service of 24 hours, you have to pay extra, and the 48-hour charge was already fairly expensive. I ended up just washing my clothes by hand, because that was free and way faster than their “normal” laundry service. Another big negative is that the hotel was fairly noisy. My room was close to a game room, which is great for the many kids staying there, but it generates a lot of noise. I also had a family with a screaming infant in the room next door. Also, compared to the other two hotels I stayed at, the bathroom here was noticeably smaller, and there wasn’t much room to store clothing.This hotel overall was disappointing. The big positive was the restaurant. The buffet breakfast was really good, a lot of variety and a platter of already-made omelets. I also went there for dinner once and ordered à la carte (they also have a buffet), and it was reasonably priced and delicious. Another positive was a nice outdoor pool—theoretically, you could swim laps in it if they opened it before 9:00 a.m. , but with a 9:00 a.m. opening, people start to use it for soaking and not exercise.
