  “Blue ribbon Pousada”

  Medium size Pousada accommodated in a 12th century Augustinian monastery. Has about 50 bedrooms, half of them in the old part and the others in a new lower extension.The ambiance of the hotel is historic, peaceful, spacious and unhurried. The building is historic with noteworthy courtyards and public rooms. However, the original building was destroyed by fire in 1953 and heavily restored from 1972 to 1977. So, yes, it is indeed “historic” but with much1970s’ type restoration.Our bedroom was up the stairs in an old friers’ cell was comfortable but not enormous. The bedroom overlooked the rear of the building and had ensuite facilities. There are larger bedrooms in the old part of the hotel. We did not see the bedrooms in the new extension.When booking it’s very important to be clear what type of room you are booking and in which part of the Posada it is located. You have been warned!!!An informal breakfast was typical of Portugal served in a dedicated room in the basement of the building separate from the main restaurant. A wholesome more formal dinner is served in the restaurant.There are an abundance of lounges and public areas including a separate bar. The semi-open-air balcony of Saint Jerome, at the end of the corridor of the cells at the end of the main enormous corridor is stunning. Do not miss!!!The hotel has extensive historic gardens/grounds with views towards Guimarãe. There is a moderately sized open-air swimming pool a few minutes’ walk from the rear of the hotel. It has a bar/café.The walk (downhill) into the centre of Guimarãe takes about half an hour. The return journey is much slower due to the climb up the hill. Buses and local taxis are available for the less fit or if it’s the season of the midday summer sun.Loads of free car parking directly in the front of the imposing hotel.All the hotel team were courteous and helpful. Although not a “luxurious” hotel, if you want one of those, go elsewhere. We however, will definitely stay here again, if revisiting the area.   We were sad to leave

  Gorgeous old converted monastery high up a windy road. Unfortunately reaching the town is not really practical in October unless you get a taxi but lighter evenings it may be walkable, if a fairly long walk!Peaceful surroundings. The building had a sense of calm. Views over town and of the cable car to the church at the top of mountain. Swimming pool and snack bar. Lots of places to sit peacefully and relax. Cosy bar area with a log fire and tables for a lighter menu. Beautiful restaurant and breakfast area. Tiles on the walls and stone arches. They lit the log fire in the restaurant the evening we ate there. Delicious meal too. Delicious custard tarts at breakfast. So custardy. Staff very friendly and willing to help. They spoke excellent English too. Rooms were huge and well appointed. Good lighting even in the bathroom.No tea/coffee/fridge but that's not uncommon in Europe. There was a safe. Loved our short 2 night stay. We were sad to leave.   Superb accommodation in a historic Pousada

  Outstanding hotel

  Outstanding historic building and green surroundings with superb service and friendliness. Breakfast and restaurant offer great food and service. We’ve visited las year, came back an plan to be back. The town offers great 17/18 century atmosphere in the historic quarters.   Enjoy the grandeur!

  Just back from two wonderful days at the Pousada. The old monastery has been fully renovated to provide a high standard of modern amenities while preserving the grandeur and quite elegance of the past. The enormous public rooms, quite cloisters, gracious verandahs and extensive landscaped gardens make this a destination in its own right. This is the type of place you would expect to have to pay an entrance fee and be watched by security guards. Instead you are free to wander the halls and find your own quite space.Our standard room was spacious with full height French windows overlooking the city below. The bed area was separated by two steps up to a sitting area with sofa/bed, arm chairs and coffee table. Bed was very comfortable and had selection of comfy pillows. Hot water flowed in the shower very quickly. A/C worked fine. Breakfast was top class with hot and cold buffet kept well stocked. Dinner in the elegant dining room was excellent and service was top notch. Reservations are a must. We weren't able to get a place for our second night and food offerings in the bar are quite limited.Despite the grandeur of the Pousada, it was the staff - every one of them - that stood out as one of the most memorable aspects of our stay. Wait staff were constantly attentive. We were barely out of the car before one of the receptionists was there to greet us and to take our bags. As we were about to leave, we were confronted with a dead car battery. The receptionist called the rental company for us and made all of the arrangements to have a mechanic there in less than 20 minutes.I am typically a Scrooge type traveler, but I thought our stay at Pousada was tremendous value for money.
