Comfort in a beautiful Manor House

    rating08 Oct 2025

We arrived at Balugães on the Camino and contacted the hotel for help in getting there. Whilst it is only 3km away the walk takes about 45 minutes part of which is along a busy main road. The hotel kindly sorted out transport for us. On arrival, our host noticed that my daughter and I had booked a room with a double bed and quickly tried to exchange our room for twin beds.Set in a secluded location with lovely views, which included an old viaduct, before we knew it we were seated by the pool resting our weary bones. We were joined by other guests and were happy to chat with them. Our room was clean and comfortable and furnished in the traditional manner in what it appeared to be an old stable. Whilst the room was fairly dark we were only there to sleep and we had everything we needed. I was concerned that the mattress was rather firm but in the end I slept like a log, possibly because it was so quiet.Dinner was served in the very grand dining hall. We were seated at the table with the other guests and enjoyed a lovely evening. All the diners were walkers and we bumped into them, at different times, later on in our Camino. The food was good Portuguese fare. Breakfast was simple and, in my opinion, there was nothing lacking. We left the hotel fully satisfied.

A beautiful place with stunning views

    rating01 May 2025

We only stayed here for 2 nights as part of a walking tour. The house is beautiful and very thoughtfully restored. It is situated high up on the hill so affords lovely views across the valley and the viaduct. The food, both breakfast and dinner on both days was excellent and so nicely presented. We were given a packed lunch before departing, which was packaged in a lovely cloth drawstring bag.As this was early in the season, the pool was not ready. There was very little outdoor seating, but I’m sure there will be more for the summer season.

    Wonderful experience

    rating17 May 2024

We felt so welcomed by Delfim, Carlos, and staff. The rooms are all slightly different and beautifully appointed. Bright, beautiful, and clean with delightful gardens, terraces, and court yards to explore. The view to the Valley and the gorgeous old rail bridge made a homesick heart more grateful. The gardens are stunning with an incredible view of the valley. The food was rustic and generous, thanks to Delfim's mother. I wish we had stayed a week. Two days was not long enough.

This is an impressive old building with many antiques and much character . The staff are very friendly and helpful. It is in a very quiet location and guests are given personal attention . The view from the dining room is impressive and the food and wine are delicious.

An ancient manor house well off the 'beaten track', though near the Portuguese Camino

    rating05 Nov 2018

A very extensive and old hotel set in wonderful gardens and with a large pool. There are several good walks from the door in this unspoiled area, and the village (Durraes) has a lively bar, excellent chocolate factory, and small but well-stocked supermarket. The food is substantial 'home-cooked' Portuguese - big buffet breakfasts and well-prepared dinners. The bedrooms are large and 'baronial' with authentic furniture. The views across the valley are lovely, with a large terrace from which to enjoy them. Durraes does not appear on most maps, being near Bulagaes, but it has a station and is about an hour by car from Porto. We stayed here as part of Inntravel's 'Manor Houses of the Minho' walking holiday
