No more El Canario, but the new Abitta was very enjoyable!

    rating14 Jan 2025

Travel sites need to update their records, as apparently El Canario and Abitta Boutique Hotel have merged and there is no longer any signage indicating that El Canario exists. When your Uber driver drops you off and you seem lost...go into the Abitta and hope they have your reservation in their two systems! That said, the Abitta was a very nice stay overall: the room was clean and comfortable with everything I needed, the staff was friendly and helpful, the onsite restaurant was delicious and fresh, and the beach area (several blocks away on Condado Beach) was convenient and safe. This was an excellent location with convenient access to Condado shopping, beaches, dining and other activities, and it was easy to get to Ashford, the main drag where you can find most anything you need. There is parking at this property, but I was fine without a rental car. Make sure you note the beach rental hours; they stop giving chairs at 4:30 PM.Plan to eat at the onsite restaurant every day, or else the daily surcharge you must pay is a waste. I really enjoyed the breakfasts, and they were worth it! Guest Experience Manager, Owner at El Canario Lagoon Hotel, responded to this review Dear PittTrvlr,Thank you for your insightful review! We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Abitta Boutique Hotel after the transition from El Canario. We appreciate your understanding regarding the name change and the potential confusion it may cause for guests. It’s great to know that you found your room clean and comfortable, and that our friendly staff contributed positively to your experience. We’re also glad you enjoyed the onsite restaurant and the convenience of our location near Condado Beach and local attractions.Thank you for the tip about the beach rental hours; we will ensure this information is clearly communicated to our guests. Your feedback about the daily surcharge for dining is also valuable, as we aim to provide a worthwhile experience for our guests. If you have any further comments or suggestions, please feel free to reach out. We hope to welcome you back for another enjoyable stay in the future!Warm regards,T. Cruz Guest Experience Manager Canario Lagoon Hotel

Needs careful consideration - construction works in proximity

    rating07 Jun 2023

This hotel has both pluses and minuses. In hindsight, I would have chosen a different hotel for our 10 mights stay in San Juan.Pros: 1) close to the El Condado beach (4 minutes walking distance) - one of the best in San Juan, 2) v friendly and helpful service - everyone speaks English and the staff goes above and beyond to accommodate guests’ requests, 3) clean sheets & towels and daily cleaning services, 4) air conditioning, 5) cheap compared to others in the area - we paid $102 per night 6) big TV with a great choice of programs 7) access to the next door hotel’s pool 8) breakfast is included but there are not so many options Cons: 1) the room doors are old & the floors are made of old style granite - makes sense for a seaside hotel but it looks like a mental institution 2) there are construction works carried out next to the hotel hence it is v disturbing to wake up at 7am to the sound of a drilling machine while on vacation 3) our room smelled of chlorine 4) the elevator makes an extremely loud sound (like someone is breaking a walk or dropping a big piece of furniture) 5) the hotel does not have a security guard which allowed for v nosy hotel guests who shouted, broke bottles in the lobby & had a fight (from what we could hear from our room) 6) the breakfast food is the same every day 7) the pool has only 6 sun beds and 5 chairs 8) overall, the vibe is not great Guest Experience Manager, Owner at El Canario Lagoon Hotel, responded to this review Dear luminita0,Thank you for choosing our hotel for your stay in San Juan and for sharing your feedback. We appreciate your recognition of the positives, such as our convenient location near El Condado beach, friendly and helpful service, cleanliness, affordable rates, amenities like air conditioning and a large TV, and access to the neighboring hotel's pool. We're glad that you found value in these aspects of your stay.We apologize for any inconveniences you experienced during your stay. We understand that the construction works next to the hotel were disturbing, and we regret the impact it had on your vacation. We also apologize for any unpleasant chlorine odor and the noise from the elevator. Your feedback regarding the security situation and the breakfast options is duly noted, and we will take it into consideration for future improvements. We regret if the limited number of pool chairs affected your experience as well.We appreciate your candid feedback about the room doors, the old-style granite floors, and the overall vibe of the hotel. We will carefully consider your comments as we continue to evaluate and improve our facilities.Once again, we apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your feedback. We hope that despite the challenges, you were able to enjoy your time in San Juan. If you have any further concerns or would like to discuss your experience in more detail, please feel free to reach out to us directly.Best regards,T. CruzGuest Experience Manager

Not fancy but comfortable and cozy

    rating12 Mar 2023

This hotel was very no frills - almost felt like staying in an old college dorm. But it was clean, comfortable, safe, and the hospitality from the front desk was top notch. Definitely a good option for a stopover or quick stay. We checked in very late (2am) and parked at The Parking at Condado lot and walked about 6 minutes to the hotel. It was a little hard to find in the dark with so much construction on the street, would’ve been easier to find in the morning. Guest Experience Manager, Owner at El Canario Lagoon Hotel, responded to this review Dear Explore691218,Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We're glad to hear that you found our hotel comfortable and cozy, and that our front desk team provided top-notch hospitality. We understand that our hotel may not have all the frills of a luxury property, but we're happy to provide a clean and safe space for our guests to relax and recharge. We're also pleased to know that our location worked well for your late check-in, even though it was a bit difficult to locate in the dark.Thank you again for choosing our hotel for your stay, and we hope to welcome you back in the future for another comfortable and cozy visit.Warm regards,T. Good for One Night

    rating09 Feb 2023

Our cruise ship came into port at 8:30 a.m. and the hotel was kind enough to allow us to store our luggage until check in at 3:00. The staff was very accommodating and the hotel is close to the beach - only about a block away as well as Ashford Avenue with tons of restaurants and shops. However, the rooms are a bit depressing. The walls are pretty bare, linoleum on the floor and the elevator was scary - sounds like you are going to get stuck in it by the way it groans. When I sat on the terrace I just overlooked concrete buildings and roofs. There is a nice little outside lobby with patio tables and umbrellas to sit at and a decent little breakfast room. Also be aware of the "coquis" - high pitched sounds by the tree frogs in the lagoon nearby. These are all over Puerto Rico but drove me bananas when I was trying to sleep! Finally i just tuned them out. The price here was less than the higher priced hotels nearby but you might want to spend the extra money for a cheerier room and stay right on the beach. Guest Experience Manager, Owner at El Canario Lagoon Hotel, responded to this review Dear Hiker0957,Thank you for choosing to stay with us and for sharing your experience. We're glad to hear that our staff was accommodating and that our location worked well for you with its proximity to the beach and nearby restaurants and shops. We're sorry to hear that the decor of our rooms didn't quite meet your expectations, and that you found the elevator to be a bit scary. We take these concerns seriously and will be looking into ways to improve the overall aesthetics and functionality of our property.Regarding the "coquis," we understand that the sound of the tree frogs in the nearby lagoon can be quite overwhelming, especially for those who are not accustomed to it. We'll certainly do our best to make our guests aware of this in the future, and we're glad to know that you were able to tune them out eventually.Thank you again for your feedback, and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future for a more enjoyable stay.Best regards,T. NOT FOR FAMILIES

    rating27 Dec 2022

Ok, I know "you get what you pay for," but I also want to "get what I paid for." The pictures are really glamourized or photos hopped because they are much prettier than the actual location. Now, the room WAS CLEAN. I appreciate that. These pictures are after 6 nights, so factor that in. But, there is literally ONE VIEW of water as shown. There is ZERO parking except for walking to/from a parking garage and paying 20 a day. The "beach," again you have to walk WAY TOO FAR for this to be called a beach front, beach access, or any beach anything. Just go stay on Condado beach and enjoy it. Oh, by the way, THIS IS NOT A SWIMMING BEACH. IT HAS AN UNDERTOW AND IS TREACHEROUS. No swimming, floating or sand castle dreams here. The walk to the street with all the nightlife is just around the block, but it's only bars and food. Two souvenir shops and one never opened. This is NOT A FAMILY destination. Great for 20 somethings or single folks that want to party. Too far from ANYTHING AT ALL for families. Don't be fooled by it. There is a beach EVERYWHERE in Puerto Rico El Canario Lagoon Hotel Guest Services, Owner at El Canario Lagoon Hotel, responded to this review We apologize sincerely for the misunderstanding you experienced while staying with us. We do not advertise we are a beach front hotel on any of the booking sites. We are fairly close, just about a block and half away. Condado beach, depending on the season can have undertows. However the "Playita de Condado" by the bridge is very peaceful. The lagoon across the street from that Playita is also very peaceful place. Playa Ultimo Trolley has areas that seem like pools. All of these are walking distance from our hotel. We strive to offer all of our guests a pleasant experience while staying in budget. Being an urban hotel, real estate is at a premium and there is a parking garage for pay our guests may use. Bear in mind that no hotels in the area have free parking. All of the hotels charge parking, even in premises. I know that is not what travelers are used to, but it is like that here in Puerto Rico. Condado is just a small area of Puerto Rico. All across the island there are activities that can be enjoyed with the whole family like the rainforest, rivers, Old San Juan and more. Also, close to us is the lagoon where Kayaks can be rented and children are allowed to ride with their parents. I am so sorry you feel that you had an awful experience. We hope that in the future you can give us the opportunity to serve you again and change your mind regarding our hotel. Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. Your feedback is very valuable as it helps us improve.
