An Excellent Hotel—Until You Reach the Front Desk

    rating24 Apr 2026

An Excellent Hotel—Until You Reach the Front DeskI recently stayed at the Garden Court Sandton City and had a genuinely mixed experience. There is a great deal to admire about the property itself, and several members of staff delivered exceptional service—but ongoing issues with guest services significantly disrupted my stay.I stayed at the hotel for 10 nights, from 15 April to 25 April, with two extensions during that period. Unfortunately, these extensions highlighted ongoing issues with guest services, including miscommunication around my checkout date that resulted in unexpected additional costs.Starting with the positives: the hotel grounds are beautiful. The garden and pool area are particularly impressive—well-maintained, peaceful, and visually striking. The breakfast buffet is excellent, with great variety and consistently high quality. The dining staff and chefs were outstanding—warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The Riffs bar and grill team were equally friendly and created a personalized experience that made dining there a highlight. The housekeeping team deserves special recognition. They were consistently friendly, attentive, and proactive. Small requests—such as extra coffee and condiments—were remembered and fulfilled daily without needing to be repeated. More importantly, even on days when I left my room late, well past the usual servicing window, I would return to find it fully cleaned. That level of consistency and flexibility reflects a team that takes real pride in their work. The concierge staff were also excellent—always welcoming, helpful, and professional.Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for guest services. The issue was not a single mistake, but a pattern: poor communication, lack of attention to detail, and a noticeable absence of basic customer care.On arrival, I expected a room with a bathtub based on the website, but was assigned a standard room with only a shower. It was only after raising this that I was informed that bathtubs are exclusive to family rooms—something not clearly communicated online.I happily upgraded to the family room, but encountered repeated issues. In multiple rooms, the bathtub did not function properly and would not hold water. In one case, there were also cockroaches and a strong, unpleasant odor in the bathroom. Maintenance was promised at one point but never arrived. It took several room changes and repeated explanations to secure a room that met basic requirements, such as being quiet and away from the elevators. I settled with a standard room. The most frustrating issue occurred when I extended my stay. I clearly requested a checkout on Friday 24th to align with my travel plans, but was incorrectly booked to check out on the Thursday. I only discovered this when I was contacted about checkout, which resulted in unexpected additional costs due to a failure to follow clear instructions.Throughout these interactions, most guest services staff were dismissive and, at times, condescending. Rather than listening or taking ownership, there was a consistent sense that guest concerns were treated as an inconvenience. Basic hospitality—such as communicating with patience—was often absent. Interactions frequently felt transactional at best, and at worst, uncomfortable. This stands in stark contrast to the rest of the hotel, where multiple departments demonstrated exactly the level of care one would expect. In summary, this is a beautiful hotel with strong amenities and several excellent teams. However, the guest services experience requires urgent improvement. Better communication, attention to detail, and a more respectful, guest-focused approach would significantly elevate the overall stay.I would return for the facilities and the service provided by other departments—but would highly recommend meaningful improvement and training in guest services. Until then, I would strongly advise guests to double-check all arrangements carefully at the front desk. I felt at home throughout my stay

Location is excellent and convenient. Atmosphere is good, rooms are clean. Depending on which side your room is, it can be very quiet and tranquil, no noise. Staff are very professional and understanding to changing circumstances of guests like me who had special needs; and I received special attention from senior staff such as Oral at front desk and Rudolf at dining.
