The hotel bathroom was full of mosquitos from staff leaving windows open. I woke up with bed bug bites on my arms.

Adequate hotel close to the old town

    rating05 Mar 2025

It is a hotel with mixed heritage and is rather rambling property. There seem to be rooms in heritage building but also in newer buildings. It is a bit of a rabbit warren, rooms spread all over the place. We arrived late in the evening after a long flight into Cape Town and then driving to Stellenbosch. The main entrance is difficult to find as it is on a side street and the name of the hotel is rather difficult to find. On-site Parking is quite limited. We were verbally recognised as gold Marriott member but no benefits were offered. We were allocated a room on the 1st floor but there were no lifts and heavy suitcases had to be lugged manually, very difficult and tiring. The room itself was not what we expected so we rang reception and they said to check in the morning and an upgrade may be possible. We then had a different person at reception in the morning and as usual the standard response was, “sorry, we are fully booked”. When we explained again that we were reassured about an upgraded room did the receptionist consulted with her manager and we were given a proper loft room with a separate living area in addition to the loft bedroom. The breakfast room is quite nice with nice original plaster ceiling. Buffet breakfast is ok with egg station if you want. The hotel is close to many restaurants on the Main Street of Stellenbosch as well as the historic buildings, some dated from 18th century. I would label it as a 3 rather than 4 star hotel. Gerty Munro, General Manager at Protea Hotel Stellenbosch Dorpshuis & Spa, responded to this review Dear EAA1947Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your recent stay at Protea Hotel Dorpshuis & Spa. Being one of Stellenbosch's historic landmarks, with the main building built in 1912 as a guesthouse, Dorpshuis is steeped in rich history and here both the building and the furniture tells the story of nearly a century of providing fantastic hospitality to local and international visitors. Our property offers both historic and modern elegance. Guest enjoys the spacious rooms with large public space which demonstrate a country style hotel. Even if the hotel is fully booked you will not notice this.We are happy that we could offer a complimentary upgrade on the second day as the hotel was fully booked during your stay. As a 30-bedroom hotel it is not always possible to offer a free upgrade as this is subject to availability. Once again thank you for your review we hope to welcome you back if your travel brings you back to Stellenbosch.Kind RegardsGerty MunroGeneral Manager

Protea Hotel - Stellenbosch a disgrace

    rating11 Mar 2024

I would not pay for this accommodation.Toilet seat broken - unhygienic and should be replaced immediatelyNo shampooElectrical point - cover hanging loose - unsafeNo shower - hand-held shower but no where to attach to the wallThis is a disgrace to the Protea name Gerty Munro, General Manager at Protea Hotel Stellenbosch Dorpshuis & Spa, responded to this review Dear 92shirleepThank you so much for taking the time to give us your feedback.Wow this is very, very disappointed - Protea Hotel Dorpshuis & Spa is a very high demand hotel providing accommodation to national and international GUEST and this room you are referring to is in our historical building dated back to 1912 , however it should always be in a good and excellent condition for our GUEST. I am so sorry when you met with me yesterday regarding an upgrade you did not mention it to me as I could have address and sort this out immediately or alternatively assist you with moving you to our sister hotel as the hotel is fully booked. I have made sure the toilet seat has been changed - our new GUEST amenities is a 3 in one, this is in your room. We will look at the hand shower and also the plug is unbelievable and very noticeable when cleaning and checking the room but has been fixed. We will have a meeting today with all roll players that cleaned the room yesterday and checked the room. Kind RegardsGerty MunroGeneral Manager I do apologies for the inconvenience, and you are welcome to meet with me on your return today!

    Historic hotel

    rating30 Jan 2024

The hotel has an old traditional feel to it.We stayed in room 12 for one night. It was large, and the bed was comfortable with nice bed linen. I had a very good sleep there. The bathroom was massive, with a lovely walk-in rain shower, but unfortunately it flooded each time we had a shower. As we arrived late, we decided to have dinner at the hotel. In hindsight, I wish we had walked into the centre of Stellenbosch instead. There are some great restaurants there, and the area felt very safe.

    Comfortable experience

    rating05 Jan 2024

The hotel rooms are spacious and comfortable. I like small hotels and this was it for me, and felt homely. Good spread of breakfast. Nice size pool. Can you possibly consider making it a heated pool. It was summer, but it was still very cold, The good thing is that it’s partially covered by trees and this is great in summer, but doesn’t get enough sun to warm it up a bit. Food at the restaurant is fine, not much variety, but agin it could be inspired by the size of the hotel.Service could be better, on arrival they watched us from reception with suitcase, we had to ask for assistance, before they could move. It wasn’t a good first impression.Besides that, the experience was generally good.
