  Room was infested with insects. We left. Beware!

  We checked in at 3 pm, returned from dinner at 10 pm, & found worm-like insects crawling all over the walls. The desk clerk, clearly used to bug infestations, said they were millipedes & harmless. I asked if we could change rooms. She said the hotel was full, & anyway they're in all the rooms. She said she'd send someone over to spray poison.Ten minutes elapsed before we got back to the room ten minutes later, & we found five more bugs, for a total of thirty-five. A man arrived carrying a broom. He said the people who sprayed the poison left at 5 pm but he could sweep them off the walls & ceiling & kill them.It really says something that we decided to leave immediately & try our luck finding other lodging rather than spend the night at a Protea hotel. A reply to our complaint confirmed the insect problem & said they'd refund the room rate. I find this absolutely insufficient -- have you ever driven the N2 close to midnight? -- & very close to a sick joke. During this time of year, the surrounding vineyards experience an increase in centipede activity. As our property is located directly adjacent to a vineyard, these insects often move toward our premises, particularly when pesticides are applied in the vineyards, as they seek alternative environments.We do take this matter seriously and have preventative measures in place. Our team conducts regular perimeter treatments using sulphur-based solutions, in line with environmental and safety regulations, ensuring that these treatments remain harmless to both our guests and the surrounding ecosystem. Unfortunately, periods of rainfall can reduce the effectiveness of these treatments, which may allow centipedes to access the property more easily.We truly regret that this impacted your stay to such an extent and appreciate you bringing it to our attention. Your feedback is invaluable as it assists us in continuously improving our guest experience.

  Great stay at Protea Hotel by Marriott Stellenbosch & Conference Centre

  We had an excellent 3 day stay at the Protea Hotel by Marriott Stellenbosch & Conference Centre. The service was very good throughout the hotel. The restaurants are excellent with beautiful views. A special THANK YOU to Nicole Katts from the concierge desk. She is amazing!   Beware af bad service

  What a disappointment this hotel is! No smiles - no friendly service / which in our opinion comes down to careless management. We could not connect to internet - which is never a problem with our up to date devices. And more people had that problem….as frequent Marriott guests we did not feel heard and not taken care of. Would not stay here again!   Great setting, dissappointing hotel.

  Attended a science conference at this hotel last month. The setting is amazing. Beautiful views across Stellenbosch to the hills going up to Paarl. The conference center was pretty good for the meeting. The catering for the reception and evening socials was mediocre at best. So too the buffet breakfast and lunches. Both restaurants, Cultivar in the main building and Die Winegerd in a seperate building had the same food. Mediocre. The only good fare was the brick oven pizza from Die Winegerd. The rooms were in blocks of 8 on 2 levels. We had the handicap adapted room for my wife who is in a wheelchair. The facilities worked for her well, but the room is in serious need of an upgrade. Things were a bit worn out and the dining table had a broken leg. But the worst was the hot water. We ran it for 10 to 15 minutes and still barely warm. Called the desk and they said just run it. I told them we did and they sent a maintanance person. Of course when he got there it was finally getting hot. Not many years ago, the Cape Town area had a severe drought and significant water restrictions. Just getting hot water for our shower would have used up the rooms daily allotment or more. This is a Marriott hotel. The hot water problems continued until our final 2 days. Not OK!!Then, I extended the reservation for an extra day to do a wine tour before we left. In the middle of the second stop, I got a phone call from the Protea Hotel desk saying we need to vacate the room. I explained the extended day and that I had an email to confirm. He said they have no indication of that and I needed to come to the hotel ASAP. So we cut a wonderful visit to a favorite winery short and had the driver take us back to the hotel.BTW, they also sent stern emails to both my professional and personal accounts and similar messages to my SMS and Whats App. We got to the hotel desk and magic, everything is fine. We found the extension reservation, no problems. YES problems. We came back to the hotel at the desk clerk's insitance, we had a great visit cut short and now we were late for the rest of the day's appointments. Could they not have called back and said false alarm, found the extension reservation and saved us coming all the way back to the hotel????With the exception of the desk staff on that last day, the staff were wonderful. In all the aspects of the hotel, they took care of guests and were very courtious, helpful, and supportive.
