    Fantastic, unforgettable experience

To cut to the chase, Sanbona is fabulous. You should stay for at least three nights. Your guide will be an expert, and you will see elephants, giraffes, cheetahs, lions, baboons, ostrich, jackals, Oryx, kudu, rhinos, and water buffalo. We stayed at the Gondwana lodge; the accommodations are beautifully appointed, with a balcony or deck looking out to the bush and mountains in the distance, snacks on a table and a fridge stocked with various drinks. If you are from a country that drives on the right-hand side of the road, we highly recommend hiring a car “transfer” to Sanbona from Cape Town to get you there. They use Avis; you should request Trevor; he will tell you so much about the area before you even get to the reserve. From the moment you arrive and are greeted with a broadly smiling person offering a warm cloth to wipe your face and hands, and then with a pineapple coconut drink topped with a flower, you feel like you have arrived in paradise. Sanbona is the apotheosis of hospitality from beginning to end and you won’t want to leave. After your arrival you’ll be offered a lovely lunch (many choices from meats to vegetarian to pasta, etc.) and then you will prepare for the first of your late afternoon and early morning safari drives. Our guide, Janri, who had worked at Kruger for 11 years, and now four at Sanbona, had an encyclopedic knowledge of the animals and their habits and patterns, and of the incredibly varied plant life, some of it distinct to the area. He also seemed to have telescopic eyes for spotting wildlife at what seemed like a kilometer away. We saw and learned so much from him. A truly special, unforgettable experience.

    Absolutely the best!

Sanbona Dwyka Tented Lodge was beyond our expectations! We were a little hesitant in choosing this over Kruger but we flew into Cape Town and didn’t want to add more travel to see Kruger so we went hoping for the best and it was amazing, the accommodation, service and stunning location! The game drive guides are amazing! Be sure to pack a beanie and neck/face gaiter and your own binoculars, they offer one to share but it isn’t the best magnification/clarity.

    Stay at Gondwana family lodge

    rating07 Jun 2026

We recently were lucky to have the pleasure visiting Sanbona Game Lodge, and it exceeded our expectations.Travelling with a 4yo can often feel daunting, you're always worried whether they'll be entertained, engaged, and looked after. We were hoping for a safari experience that family friendly, and was something Sanbona delivered. From the beginning of our stay, the staff went out of their way to make our daughter feel like a princess. From the thoughtful gift pack, which was complete with a backpack, water bottle, hat, and unique little activity book she could take home. To singing Happy Birthday to her with a cake on our last night, (even though her actual birthday was still a few weeks away), everything they did seemed thought out and genuine. . These small touches made a lasting impression on both us and her.Our game driver, Cohen, was great. We were lucky enough to see a number of animals even though the weather wasn’t fantastic, Cohen was incredibly knowledgeable as well as engaging, and it was lucky to have him as our guide.throughout our stay. What makes Sanbona truly special is not only the wildlife or the beautiful views - feeling like you’re in the middle of nowhere and far from reality, but the people. Every member of staff made us feel welcome and looked after. Our stay was an unforgettable family experience. We would recommend Sanbona to anyone looking for a safari experience that is unique and caters for young children.

    Brilliant and beautiful experience

My husband and I stayed at the Dwyka Tented Lodge in Sanbona for 2 nights and had the most fantastic time. The rooms are beautiful, the staff are considerate, kind and incredibly friendly and the guides are knowledgeable, with the drives so well organised and fun. The whole team is dedicated to providing high quality hospitality, whilst also sharing the vision of the Reserve. We absolutely loved our stay and will recommend it to everyone!

I cannot say enough positive things about Sanbona! Our stay was an 11/10 and an incredible value. The entire experience was outstanding - everything from the delicious food, to the fantastic guide, to the amazing staff, to the beautiful property. We stayed in the Dwyka tented lodge and it was a dream come true. So beautiful and luxurious! We got to see all the animals we wanted to see, and our guide made it feel like such a personalized experience.
