Driving slowly, Gijon is about 80 minutes drive from Bilbao Ferry at Santurtzi.We stayed here in Hotel Asturias for 17 nights and just loved the hotel & all the staff.Breakfast is free if you book directly with the hotel & really good. Top quality food, European style, so lots of healthy options. The breakfast serving staff are so welcoming every morning, and replenish food as needed.Our room was on a high floor and had windows on two sides of the building through the bathroom, so we’re able to have a cooling breeze. The hotel is in the best area of Gijon, just beside the oldest part of Gijon, Cimavilla where there are numerous restaurants, and little places to explore, and Gijon’s Sandy beach San Lorenzo, and 2 minutes walk from Gijon’s marina. So lots of eating out options.We had dinner in the hotel lots of evenings where a good three course meal, with wine & water, can be had for a very reasonable €13. The chef in this hotel is really good!Spanish set lunch in Hotel Gijon is very popular and is a little more expensive at between €16-19, but there is a bigger choice. We had the Sunday Lunch and it was so so good! Make sure to book for lunch, as the locals flock here especially at the weekends!The hotel building is old but is lovingly maintained. We had a modern style room, but older style rooms are also available. Room was super clean and comfortable for us and our medium size dog. Air conditioning very efficient if needed. Lots of essential toiletries are provided so no need to pack any! Many thanks to the lovely lady who serviced our room every day, and made us feel welcome.Nowhere in the Hotel Asturias, is there a speck of dust, or any area that requires attention, or maintenance. The decor is from a time gone by, with beautiful chandeliers, and gilt paintwork.I especially love that the hotel logo is on all the hotel linens. It is a really special touch. The hotel is on the tour guides list as a famous Spanish film was made here and often groups make their way into the Lobby to catch a glimpse of this famous hotel.Almost every day we were in Hotel Asturias Gijon, something was going on in the Plaza, so the location of the hotel is superb!All the staff at reception are so helpful & always delighted to help with directions or suggestions. They will also make phone calls on your behalf if your Spanish isn’t quite up to telephone standard.Our car was parked nearby, 8 minutes walk away, at a special hotel rate, and could be moved in and out of the carpark, without penalty, for sightseeing trips. We visited Cudillero, Oviedo, Aviles, Salinas Playa, Ribadesella by car, using Hotel Asturias as our base. We also walked to the local train station & traveled to Oviedo by FEVE, several days.There is a car parking place beside the hotel, for unloading the car, when you arrive!

My 3rd. visit to this hotel was very disappointing. Previously I had spacious, though dated, rooms in keeping with the elegance of the building. This time, however I was faced with dark, narrow, badly lit corridors to the room. The room was not very large and furnished with MDF furniture that was of the Ibis type (2Star) with no drawers and minimal wardrobe space covered by only one door. The bathroom had a jacuzzi bath but the sealant was discoloured and incomplete with a shower screen that did not seal, so water escaped to the floor. The water pressure was not very high for the shower and the hand basin was cracked. The A/C was controlled from reception and not the room. It was eventually set at 23 and could not be turned off. The hotel had a discounted car park some distance away beyond the yachting harbour which I didn't use. I used the one on the Prom. that had deals with other hotels but not the Asturias. The maximum non-discounted rate was €24 for 24 hours which was worth it for the convenience. An extra chair was provided in the room but there was not enough room for it. My previous stays were booked directly with the hotel by phone, I don't know if that made any difference to the case, but I would not recommend this hotel for anyone but the desperate.

Location is fantastic and the room is clean.We were assigned a “modern room” because of the pet as opposed of the one we booked - no issue with that.I had issue with the rotten chair. The upholstery was all damaged and the night stand was broken. I mentioned to the receptionist at check out and clearly it’s something they don’t care about.I was on a road trip and booked several hotels from 3 to 5 stars… and assumed this was a 3… but they declare themselves as 4… and it’s just not the standard.We stayed in 3 stars hotel much better than Austrias.I was not expecting fancy. I was expecting clean and nice… but I can’t get over the damaged chair and broken night stand.

The good part was the very helpful bilingual receptionists who were happy to help us sort out a ) a covid test and b) a difficult taxi journey. The other good thing is the location which is hard to beat. The rest was a disappointment - It is very dated. the building is noisy at night (flushing toilets, banging doors and shutters etc), plus parquet flooring and dark wood furniture made it feel very old fashioned, the bathroom had been retiled and redecorated but with old style fittings (bath with shower over, bidet etc) I have since heard that there is a more modern part of the hotel but well, we were not offered a room there, perhaps it was more expensive? The aircon is not noisy but was inefficient. the balcony was TINY, you could barely get your feet on it and it felt like standing on a ledge, wouldnt suit anyone not liking heights/drops plus there was no way you could have got a chair or anything on it. The tv remote was in a plastic bag, presumably for easy cleaning but it didnt look new or cleaned! There was no kettle or tea/coffee making in the room and the cafe wasnt open 'apart from at weekends' she said so no way to get a coffee or tea, there wasnt a bar either and if there was a lounge we never found it. the 'minibar' was just an empty fridge and anyway went off as soon as you took your key out so no good for keeping the bottle of wine we bought in desperation cold. The towels were threadbare and none of it felt luxury or 4 star at all, I cannot believe this hotel is 4 star. Breakfast was awful, and it turned out you had to pay for it on top. We only went in for it as it was the only way to get a cup of coffee in the morning. It was a buffet (thought those were not covid safe??) and everything was out of a packet like ham, cheese and orange juice. It was all laid out and anyone could wander around touching the lids, tongs or any of it. There was hand gel out but i didnt see anyone use it. The first day there were a couple of guests wandering around with their masks not on, touching all the breakfast stuff and so we left.I know this is not the hotels fault, i did see the staff ask the people in question to sit down or put their masks on but they didnt do it and nobody made them. The dining room itself was a large charmless room like a school hall with folding screens blanking off the unused parts. There is no parking but you get a discount at the paid parking nearby but we had to drag the cases through the streets in the pouring rain.

Nice menu del dia... three course meal plus sweets. Pity it was only a choice between wine and water. Very central and not that expensive for real food.Lots of space in the restaurant and start serving early.
