No air conditioning in our room

    rating26 May 2026

I’m surprised this is considered a five star hotel based on our experience. The location was difficult to get to and our driver had to drop us off a couple of blocks away with all our luggage. Not a long walk, but pretty inconvenient. The hotel itself is nice and the staff was pleasant and friendly. The primary reason for such a poor rating is the air conditioner in our room did not work. The room was hot (in April) and we barely could sleep the first night. We reported the problem early the next morning and the staff said they would “reset” the air conditioner. We requested that they insure it was fixed while we were out on a 10 hour tour. Unfortunately, when we returned late in the day, it was apparent nothing had been done and our room was still at the same warm temperature. They again said they would “reset” the air conditioner. We informed the staff that had been tried earlier and that didn’t solve the problem. We were not offered another room. We had to request one and finally got access to a room with a functioning air conditioner around 9pm that night. We had to repack and move all our luggage which was very frustrating. We requested some level of reasonable compensation when we checked out the next morning but no one with authority was available so we paid the bill in full (not inexpensive). We have followed up with the hotel a number of times. They offered a free night stay but considering we live in Florida and have no plans to be back in Barcelona, we rejected this and again requested some level of refund. We have continued your follow up but the hotel staff has stopped communicating with us. We rarely post negative reviews but this unfortunately warrants it. We also subsequently learned that one of our daughters rooms (we rented four rooms in total) did not have a working air conditioner. However, they only stayed one night and we didn’t hear about it for a couple of weeks. Its sad that a hotel with such a lofty reputation has not stepped up to do the right thing.

Excellent hotel. Lovely location (quiet pedestrian side-street but super accessible to main thoroughfare). Service, food, room design, cleanliness and upkeep all very good.

    Disappointed

    rating25 May 2026

I’m now surprised by the high scores for Mercer. But after also staying at The Cotton House (wonderful) on the same trip it would be hard to compare. Mercer pros - friendly staff- 12th century buildingMercer cons- very dark everywhere due to tight position of other buildings all around…even in our suite with a wall of windows on sunny day- no terraces- extremely small rooftop terrace that is not lively or fun and unkept…dirty dishes, dirty towels, no bartender- very short staffed…room service person also manning the lobby bar - bar and tapas area dead and not funSo we recommend the Cotton House instead..vibrant, beautiful, well staffed and in the beautiful Eixample neighborhood versus touristy Gothic Quarter ( Burger King’s, five guys, McDonald’s, cheap trinket shops).

Modern meets ancient with impeccable service

    rating25 May 2026

If you want modern feel but timeless architecture including Roman Wall world in the glorious old quarters of Barcelona this is your place. The service defines the place.

    Great location

It's in a great location, but it's just an okay value for the money. I feel like the rooms are far too dark. I'm not sure why they don't have more overhead lighting.
