  Magic Tropical Splash, Benidorm — Tired Hotel, Decent Pool, Not Worth the Price

  We’ve just returned from a week at Magic Tropical Splash with our six-year-old daughter, all-inclusive. The short version: this isn’t a 4-star hotel, and at the price we paid it should be a lot better than it is.The pool and slidesThe pool complex is the main reason to book here, and it’s the one area that mostly delivers. Well laid out, with options for younger children and a decent range of slides. Worth knowing: to really take advantage of the bulk of the slides, kids realistically need to be 9 or 10+, largely due to height restrictions. There was enough for our six-year-old, but the bigger flumes were off-limits and that did limit things.The sunbed situationGenuinely poor and a daily frustration. The pool area doesn’t properly open until around 9am, but there’s a mob waiting at the gates every morning, towels in hand, ready to charge in and claim territory. Worse, large groups openly tag-team it — some hog the beds while the others go to breakfast, then they swap over. The result is that by mid-morning the shaded spots and best beds are “reserved” by people who aren’t actually there. The hotel makes no visible effort to manage any of it. For a family-focused resort this should have been sorted years ago.RoomsClean and spacious — the housekeeping team clearly work hard. But the rooms are visibly tired in a way the photos really don’t convey. Fixtures, fittings and furnishings are worn and dated throughout. Our bathroom also had a persistent sewerage smell throughout the week, which no amount of cleaning seemed to fix — clearly a plumbing issue rather than a hygiene one, but unpleasant nonetheless and not what you expect from a 4-star room. It’s functional, but it is not a 4-star product. We were on the 7th floor, which kept the well-documented lift problems to a minor grumble rather than a daily ordeal — but had we been allocated higher up one of the 22-floor towers, it would have been a different story.FoodPlenty of choice and all edible, but average at best. Some meals were a bit better, some a bit worse, none were memorable. My partner was unwell on the last night, hadn’t drunk anything that day, and we couldn’t rule out the food. Can’t prove anything, but worth flagging.Drinks and bar staffA standard all-inclusive selection — nothing fancy but nothing watered down. Bar staff were attentive and friendly throughout, and were one of the genuine bright spots.EntertainmentThe evening shows were good and well-timed for younger children — we appreciated this part of the holiday and the animation team clearly put the effort in. Credit where it’s due.StaffBar staff, cleaners and entertainers were excellent. Reception was a different matter. Our daughter left her trainers by the pool and they were taken. Reception’s response was a shrug, with the unspoken suggestion that we should have been more careful. A look at the hotel’s public Facebook page shows lost property going missing is a recurring pattern that the hotel seems content to ignore. Poor.Wi-FiFine in the main building, regularly patchy in our room. Not good enough.Check-in / check-outSmooth enough, though clearer information on how various all-inclusive elements work wouldn’t go amiss.LocationQuiet end of Benidorm near La Cala. The local La Cala beach itself is lovely and we visited a couple of times — a genuine plus and worth knowing if you’d rather avoid the busier main strip. Bus into central Benidorm is cheap and frequent.Fellow guestsWorth mentioning because there are a lot of guests, and the mix is mixed. Most people are lovely, friendly families just enjoying their holiday. A noticeable minority are classic Brits abroad in the less flattering sense — loud, entitled, and the sort who’ll plant a towel on six sunbeds at 7am and then complain there’s nowhere to sit. Also a distinct lack of ‘parenting’ going on - kids allowed to do whatever they like, for as long as they like (including enjoying their ice creams in the pool!) It’s not unique to this hotel, but the sheer volume of guests amplifies it. If you want a quieter, more refined break, this isn’t it. If you don’t mind the British package-holiday vibe, you’ll fit right in.VerdictIt’s all about expectations. Ours were reasonable for the price and they weren’t met. The hotel is tired, the food is average, reception is indifferent, and key issues like sunbed-hogging and lost property are simply ignored. The pool, entertainment and most of the staff are good — but they don’t make up for the rest. We won’t be going back. If you can find it cheap and you genuinely don’t mind a worn-out property, you’ll get by. At the price it’s currently marketed, it doesn’t come close to justifying itself.Pros: Good pool complex, decent slides for older children, strong evening entertainment, hard-working bar and housekeeping staff, lovely local beach at La Cala, quiet location.Cons: Tired and dated throughout, persistent sewerage smell in our bathroom, average food, possible food-related illness, indifferent reception, lost property handled poorly, sunbed-hogging unchecked, patchy in-room Wi-Fi, very busy with a mixed crowd, not a 4-star experience at a 4-star price. The resort receives thousands of satisfied guests every season who value the overall experience and the wide range of services included.Regarding the food, all hygiene and food safety controls are carried out under strict regulations and continuous monitoring. Suggesting possible illness without any medical confirmation is unfair and irresponsible. Likewise, any plumbing or maintenance issue reported to reception is attended to by our technical team as quickly as possible.Concerning sunbeds, unfortunately the hotel cannot control individual guest behaviour at all times, although opening schedules and operational procedures are established precisely to ensure fair use of the facilities.As for lost property, the hotel follows strict protocols and cannot be held responsible for unattended personal belongings left in public areas. Nevertheless, our reception team always assists guests whenever possible.Finally, we appreciate that you recognised something very important: expectations should match the type of resort booked.   Wasn't the room we were expecting but everything else - food, snacks entertainment - was great. Lifts did work just had to wait a while sometimes.   A nice family holiday in a very large & busy hotel. The location is good, only a short walk to a lovely beach, bars and a market on Saturdays. There’s a bus stop across the road that takes you into Benidorm itself.The hotel is very loud and brash. If you’re looking at a quiet relaxing break, this is not the hotel for you. There is entertainment on every night outside, but nowhere near enough chairs. The ents team really made an effort with the Halloween stuff while we were there. We did manage to find a sun lounger everyday but either went down early or later in the afternoon. The adults only section with a hottub closed earlier than stayed on a few days. The slides are awesome - water park level. The pool itself is freezing but plenty of people still enjoyed it. There are several bars and we enjoyed the drinks. Slight queues sometimes.Myself and children didn’t have a problem with the food - we loved the breakfasts (pastries & fruits) and always found something for dinner. My partner wasn’t a fan and didn’t rate the quality of the meat. We had a 2 bedroom silver room and we found it adequate. Plenty of space, the air conditioning worked and it was cleaned regularly. We were only on the 6th floor which I’m glad of. The lifts seemed unreliable and there were only 2 for each tower. The gym was tiny, but I had a lovely massage in the spa. Reception were always helpful and there is a stand outside that gets you a taxi.If you have kids id recommend this hotel as there is stuff to keep them occupied.
