    90s hangover

    rating06 Dec 2025

A sad and neglected hotel which is celebrating 30 years in business by reminding everyone that it is just the same as the day it opened. Prepared to be whisked back to the 90s when pine wood with a burgundy finish on all the furniture was all the rage along with huge table lamps and sea-themed wall paper. Everything being so old is chipped and threadbare including the sad chair at the desk which had no base having endured thirty years of people’s backsides. This would be fine if the prices reflected a hotel on the giving up stage of life but this place is in denial of how old it has become. Please put future customers out of their misery with a new buyer shutting the place down for a year and doing a total refurbishment. It would be worth it as the views from the front facing balconies are wonderful (but be careful of a booking on the square as that looks prime for big night entertainment in the summer months and no sleep). Other lowlights included the stench of cigarette smoke at random times of the day in a non-smoking room, a bath that would barely drain etc. The beds were comfortable - not sure how others deemed them ‘so hard’ - I’m not totally negative. But let’s get back to being negative. No kettle in the room so clearly they don’t want Brits/Irish staying here. Unsurprisingly, I passed on breakfast as my expectations were only for more disappointment - trip to the supermarket achieved the same outcome. The staff were present and the odd one or two pleasant, so I don’t personally share the complaints about attitude but I could see the easy potential for a massive queue at check-in. This place is basically a cash cow for the owners and will remain so until a decent alternative appears in the area on the sea front. Avoid unless you have just arrived in a time machine from 1995. Good luck trying to find somewhere to park it. Palafox Hoteles, Agency / Consultant at Hotel Playa Victoria, responded to this review Dear guest, thank you for taking the time to write this extensive review of Hotel Playa Victoria. First of all, we regret that we have not been able to meet your expectations. From the comments about the rooms and your knowledge of the facilities we understand that you have been to the hotel several times. If so, you may have seen that many improvements and renovations have been made since the hotel reopened in 1993. Some of these reforms have been carried out on internal elements that are perhaps not perceptible to customers with the naked eye. Other parts of the hotel that have been completely refurbished in recent years (lifts, swimming pool, ceilings, etc.) have been aspects recognisable by other regular customers. In addition to other improvements that have been made in the rooms themselves, such as lighting control, access locks with proximity keys, new high-definition televisions, new mattresses, redecoration of part of the rooms, etc. The goal is to renovate all the rooms in the hotel, and we hope to have it finished as soon as possible. The decoration of the rooms was the work of the prestigious decorator Pascua Ortega, all made with top quality materials, which can be noticed somewhat worn over the years but with a small improvement they recover their splendor. At the Hotel Playa Victoria all guests of all nationalities are welcome. Coffee, kettle and tea service are available in the superior rooms. In the rest it is not always placed but you can request the kettle at no extra cost. We were sorry that the breakfast was not to their liking either, we always tried to offer a breakfast of great quality and variety. It is usually one of the aspects best valued by customers. We are happy to know that on the other hand you have been able to enjoy the wonderful views of Playa de la Victoria and the friendly treatment of our staff. We hope that you will continue to stay with us on your trips to Cadiz and that you will be able to see how improvements are being made to the rooms as well as to the common areas of the hotel. We would sincerely like you to give us a new opportunity to be able to improve your experience. We send you a cordial greeting.Hotel Playa Victoria.

    Excellent Hotel - beautifully situated

    rating13 Sept 2025

Great location overlooking Playa Victoria beach. Close to shops, cheap public transport and many restaurants to suit all tastes. Breakfast was varied and good but busy as hotel was full. Staff coped admirably. Many other reviews have commented that the hotel is due for a refresh. Certainly some areas of the hotel and some parts of the rooms have “seen better days”. However the hotel and rooms are kept scrupulously clean. The maid service is outstanding. The hotel staff are friendly and attentive. Other reviews have complained about the WiFi but despite the reception telling us our room had a poor signal the WiFi was very fast (at least 100 Mbps download) and strong. Other reviews have commented on lack of sun loungers around the pool. Despite the hotel being full we did not have too many problems. However the poor state of the loungers (sagging, stains on the material) is really inexcusable. Please buy some new loungers and a bigger door knob for the door directly accessing the beach - it’s really difficult to open. Palafox Hoteles, Agency / Consultant at Hotel Playa Victoria, responded to this review Estimado Colin,Gracias por sus comentarios detallados. Saludos cordiales,Ana BenitezDpto. Hotel lacks warmth and friendliness

    rating12 Aug 2025

Great location right on the sea front at Playa Victoria and a good sized room for a family of 3. However, I’ve only given 3 stars because of the following:Hotel staff were unwelcoming and abrupt on arrival. They couldn’t get rid of us quick enough even when there was no queue. The room had no soap in the dispensers by the bath or sink and the coffee/tea had not been replenished since the previous guests. There were even used cartons of milk still left there. At breakfast, we were often shown to a table that was laid for 2 instead of 3 so we’d have to cobble together our own extra place. During our 1 week stay, we did not get offered fresh coffee once while this was standard for those around us. The sun loungers shown in all the photos are not actually owned by the hotel and cost €19.50 for 2 with an umbrella for the day. That’s quite a considerable cost on top of a 4* stay when you need 3 loungers. All in all, the service we experienced was poor. We might as well have gone self catering. It has crossed our mind that perhaps the British are not welcome at this hotel and everyone else’s experience will be better! A Hotel with Character

We have just spent 4 wonderful nights at this Hotel. From the minute we walked in off the street looking for a room ( and getting 4 nights ) to when we left , we had a great experience here. All staff were so polite and very helpful throughout. We booked breakfast which was very good. Average but in a great location

    rating18 Oct 2024

The hotel is in an excellent position being right on the beach. It's an easy 10 minute bus journey in to the old city. The hotel was full when we stayed owing to a nearby beach football event. We had a great view from our room but the room and bathroom seem a bit tired and dated. The in house restaurant didn't look worth bothering with but there are several excellent retaurants within a short walk. The reception staff were a little brusque which may have been due to it being so busy. They weren't especially welcoming. The breakfast buffet was ok and was regularly replennished by the staff but was nothing special. If I returned to Cadiz I'd probably find somewhere else to stay.
