  Excellent 4 star hotel with great pool, slides and beach access

  My family really enjoyed our week at Playabellena in August. The hotel facilities are good for the price and star rating. I think some people review based on 5 star expectations but only want to pay for a 4 star hotel. We enjoyed it and there was enough variety for a week, though a longer stay would get boring. The free crazy golf, table tennis, Pétanque and shuffle was great and the kids enjoyed them every day. The pools were great with no rush to get loungers as it didn't open until 10am. The water slides were excellent for our young kids, but for older ones there is an excursion to Aqualand for bigger slides which might be appealing. The staff were helpful and friendly. The beach is huge and unspoilt, with amazing sunsets each night. The beach bar with live music is worth a visit. There is a bit of a language issue, but nothing you cannot overcome with a little patience and google search. Ordering food, drinks and checking in was no problem at all, it was just tricky if you had a less common question. Personally I enjoyed being in a resort that was largely Spanish as it felt more authentic and less boozy than other resorts.   Absolute disappointment. We arrived at Playa Ballena hotel after 12 hours of travelling with little ones, only to wait another hour because our room wasn't ready, even though we were an hour late than the expected arrival time. Staff were incredibly rude and could not care less about our situation and did not even know when our room would be ready by! The overall atmosphere is depressing, no music being all day except for when they do zumba by the pool for 20mins. Staff are rude especially the lifeguards who were constantly picking on my kids over the smallest things such as having a floatie, or a small beach ball and told them they werent allowed it but said nothing to other kids with floaties and balls! We paid for all inclusive but we still have to pay for cocktails served at the bar. They also charge you €1 per towel to have it changed for a clean one (never had this anywhere else in the world) and you can't smoke anywhere other than the 1 smoking area they have on the premises. The rooms are big, however you have to pay extra to be able to use the safe in the room, again never had this anywhere else, and the rooms are not cleaned daily- we were waiting for thw cleaner to come all day to service our room as we had no clean towels left and no toilet roll left, and after being out all day we came back to the room in the same state we left it in the morning and had to wait an hour for them to bring clean towels and toilet roll. Rooms are also not adaquately cleaned, bathrooms are mostly left untouched ( during our 10 day stay the bathroom was only cleaned properly 1 time) they mostly just make the bed and mop the floor and call it a day. The pillows in the rooms are super tiny and really uncomfortable to sleep on also. There is also close to none entertainment for kids nor adults other than their daily zumba and kids disco, which is the same songs and same dances every single day on a cycle and once the kids disco finishes that is it for the day there is no music at all anywhere you go and they even turn off all the lights outside to ensure you aren't outside trying to have fun while on holiday. They claim their rooms are soundproof, meanwhile all you can hear all night long is other people screaming and shouting down the corridoors having no respect for people who have children sleeping in the rooms or anyone else. As for the food, it was not terrible, but very repetative, pretty much the same food in different forms every day and on some days there are not really many options other than fish and seafood. Do not come here if you don't speak Spanish as 99% of the staff do not speak english and could not care less what your needs are, yet they claim to be "committed to tourism quality." Funny. Will not be returning, not worth the money at all!   I would not recommend this hotel to anyone specially family with small kids. We had to wait nearly an hour for our room to be ready, its not like they didn’t know we coming .. we been told our 2 year old cant have swimming floatie in the pool, not sure how they expect kids to use the pool . Also we have paid all inclusive but still had to pay for cocktails, ice creams , crisps, also we were not allowed to smoke on terrace or bar only in designated smoking area which was really disappointing . Food wasn’t that bad but seem like always the same food . Our ac didn't work for couple of days until they fixed it properly. Some of the stuff had no joy of helping with anything the reception staff has to improve on customer service as its terrible .
