  Huge disappointment

  The hotel "The Gallivant Times Square" was a huge disappointment.The photos on their and other websites were certainly taken 5 or 10 years ago.There is a sign on the entrance door that says "caution automatic door," but it doesn't work at all.The armchair in the lobby is now completely worn out, and the elevators show signs of wear (paint, missing pieces of panel).The public toilet in the lobby was very dirty.The room is totally neglected: scratches on the walls, worn furniture, worn roller blinds.For a double room, there is only one very small sink and no place to put your belongings in the bathroom. And a bit of mold, of course.On the last day, there was no hot water for showering.When settling the bill (four nights), the receptionist said she was going to deduct $187.60 from the account (taxes) and brushed us off; when I asked for proof, she said she would get it. So this is 46.90/day, including $1 for charity. Also, this amount was deducted from my Visa card on the very first day... No idea if it always works this way.This was my 6th time in New York and this hotel was the second worst.   Surprisingly good

  We booked 2 bedrooms for four of us for 8 nights. Having read some bad reviews I was somewhat apprehensive. However we found the hotel to be perfectly adequate with helpful staff allowing us to make last minute changes. The rooms were clean and serviced every day. Yes, there were some marks on walls and shower room and corridors not as large as I have seen elsewhere, but other hotels in the same area were 50% more expensive. I recommend this hotel for frill free, budget friendly stay in perfect location.   I will start with the pros.The Gallivant Hotel is located right next to Times Square and is an ideal central hotel location.The cons:The rooms were yellow, smoke stained and badly put together. We were awoken at 4am one night to an ongoing domestic the hotel refused to deal with and eventually NYPD turned up.The worst of it:The hotel fraudulently charged me over $500 for 'Smoking in the room'. We are non smokers and this is impassible.More concerningly the report showed smoke was detected at a time we were not even in the hotel. This suggests one of two things:1 - They are fraudulently sending out reports to make extra money.2 - The hotel is giving unauthorised access to your room by hotel employees who decide to use it to smoke!We are non-smokers, we were not near the hotel and the report suggests someone was in there smoking for a LONG time.   Excellent location for a simple and correct Hotel.

  Excellent location and the whole personal at the hotel was marvelous. It's a simple hotel, no breakfast and not too many amenities but it worked perfectly. Our objective was to stay in midtown Manhattan near everything (Broadway theaters and Times Square) and this hotel did the trick, gave us a comfortable place to crash at night after entire days of walking New York. Not too expensive for NY standards and we got an room upgrade for a small difference with the initial price.   Better than expected!

  I was skeptical of the hotel based on the other reviews. A lot of times people rate hotels based on ridiculous reasons so I scanned many of the most recent reviews and found no problem with booking. This hotel was great. My room was small but clean. The front desk and housekeeper staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is in an excellent location for shows and the vibrant life of the city. I would stay here again!
