  A mixed bag great for the Spanish

  Me and my partner are currently staying at the H10 taburiente playa, los cancajos. This will be a balanced and fair review we have been here 2 days so far into a 7 night holiday. We arrived around 8:25pm at night it took us an hour of queuing to check in as there were only 2 staff on, checking around 30 people in which I thought was a little poor and was worried that the food was going to close, we managed to drop our bags in the room and get there for around 9:45pm and there were very slim pickings of food left. The rooms are quite basic, clean and average size for two people, TV, big mirror, fridge, desk and a couple of tables and chairs inside the apartment and on the balcony. There is a drying rack outside. Bathroom is quite nice and has a bath in it.A/C in the room is again VERY basic and just about works! This hotel massively caters towards its 90% demographic of Spanish. Very few waiting and bar staff speak English (I know us English can be a bit arrogant and expect everyone to speak it) it’s a 50/50 mix of pleasant staff and some are ignorant. A woman on the meat counter wouldn’t give me some kebabs as I wasn’t in the correct queue even though she was cooking both and made me walk around a metal divider that was 1.5ft away then proceeded to serve the Spanish lady behind me with both beef and kebab without re queuing!! It is absolutely CHAOS in the morning and evening in the main dining hall food runs out very quickly and is VERY slow to be replaced. You have to go down at the opening times of each meal time to be guaranteed a seat and some food. The food is VERY basic we can always just about manage to find something to eat but in terms of choice, variety and flavour it’s nowhere near anywhere I have stayed before and would rate it at best 3.5/10. There is an entertainment area which again is ok and mainly caters towards the Spanish, there is nothing wrong with the bar staff they are all friendly but again I don’t expect to wait 15/20 mins just to get a drink! Santa Cruz de la Palma (Capital of the Island) is around a 3 mile walk which we have done twice and got a taxi back for €9/10. There are always plenty of sun loungers and parasols around the 3 pools not too sure what this would be like in peak season as it’s October at the minute. The gym is very basic but ample for what majority of people need. Over all it’s a quiet holiday with some good and bad points, it’s a little on the quiet side for me and because of the mainly catering for the Spanish I wouldn’t return again. It was cheap and you get what you pay for. It says it’s a 4 star but a more fair rating would be 3 star, mainly because of the food.

  2nd time staying at this particular hotel and food is a vast improvement on when we first stayed here. My honest opinion is when this hotel focuses on Spanish dishes, it totally hits the spot, however when the hotel focuses on trying to provide a more international selection which is offered on some nights, the food is just average. The Junior Suite we had was spacious and the air conditioning worked a treat. The room was also spotless and overall for what we paid represented really good value for money.The only let down during our stay was the mild Calima we encountered on a few days which made everything muggy and very humid, but you know you can get that anywhere on the Canary Islands and it's pot luck and dependent on the weather and you can't blame the hotel for that, but the very good air conditioning in the room helped no end.You never tire of coming to La Palma as it's such a lovely place to relax.

  It was a Privilege

  Having just read Tangowhiskey's review wondering if we had the same Privilege. This was our 4th visit but first time booking Privilege. The hotel is very Spanish ( I don't agree the English are spoiling it)trying to speak a little Spanish goes a long way with the staff who are all very pleasant.We had room 408 which had a great view across the pools to the sea. The room seemed to be exactly like a normal room apart from Privilege robes, coffee machine, a comfortable chair and chocolate/coffee pod service around 5pm every day.All amenities were good, bed comfortable and towels a generous size.We thought Privilege was well worth it for the menu service and allocated table at breakfast and dinner. We enjoyed all the menu options and my fruit plate for breakfast was certainly fresh (will post a photo). Our dinner options were also freshly prepared and large portions. You could use the buffet outside the Privilege area if you wanted to, we always went there for ice-cream.The Privilege lounge was a most welcome addition, all top brand drinks and softdrinks, bottled beer, also snacks available.It was lovely to go up to the roof terrace around 4pm for a drink and snack (olives, peanuts , crisps and a selection of spanish style rolls and cakes.There were plenty of sunloungers everywhere, we did use the Privilege section at the top of the rocky pool a few times as it was so quiet. No loud music around the pools which suited us fine.Evening entertainment was OK, a singer usually or folk dancing. There's also an area where they show La Liga football across from the main bar.Yes you did have to queue at the bar but it was never very long. There was a waiter service but too many people for them to cope with in the evening. We very much enjoyed a coffee at the lobby bar after breakfast, a very lovely staff member Franco (I think) was very entertaining and we looked forward to seeing him when we went up there, the coffee was also excellent. It is easy to walk to the local beach and to get the bus into Santa del la Cruz. I also visited the science museum a short walk from H10.Very interesting tour by Francesca (she works with the Gallileo telescope) about the earth, galaxies with great photos.To sum up : we had an excellent holiday at the H10 taburiente playa. It's a quiet hotel, very clean and suits perhaps couples and older people more than children. We would recommend Privilege. We will definitely be back.

  Lovely hotel, food needs working on

  Quiet location and great friendly staff, our suite overlooked the pools and sea. The terrace was spacious if not a little empty with 2 chairs and a small table. The beds were very comfortable and we slept very well, the curtains kept the light out making it a perfect place to stay. There was a sink, fridge, microwave , 2 cups, 2 spoons and coffee maker. No cutlery,plates etc should you want to make a room snack. The entertainment wasnt every night but little else to do in the area. Drinks were paid for using your wristband and bill settled on departure. A large beer (Jara) was €4.50. Plenty of sunbeds and large terrace areas to relax. Breakfast was good. Evening meals weren't that great, several people walked to local restaurants as they also found the food poor and cold, thankfully there is a microwave to reheat stuff, if you found something you liked. On our departure back to the ferry our car was blocked in on both sides and neither of us were able to get in to move it, a maintenance man was walking by and I asked him to help which he did , thankfully. This sums up the helpfulness of the staff, the hotels greatest asset.

  Terrible in every way.

  H10 have alway been our “go to” hotels in The Canaries, however, not any more. I’ve seen many reviews criticising the food and now we know why. It’s really terrible. In fact inedible. Examples such as Fresh Fruit Platter at breakfast, as we paid for Privilege, this was on the menu, but it certainly was not fresh I would say prepared the day previously, lunch time food was very cold in fact inedible and even the Al a Carte was reheated rubbish. No waiter service either and for a 79 year old having to queue ages at the bar why bother with privilege, in fact don’t bother with H10 and spend your money where you will be looked after elsewhere because here is terrible.
