    Look no further in Lanzarote

I spent a week at Caleton del Golfo during my stay in Lanzarote. The place is simply stunning under every respect. Conveniently located to visit both the north and the south of the island. The terrace on the sea is beautiful, and you can enjoy there wonderful breakfasts and aperitifs. The rooms are large, comfortable and clean. The host is super kind. The only problem is that once you spend a few days there is really hard to leave.

El Golfo is one of the major tourist attractions on Lanzarote. The green lake nestling in the remaining half of a volcanic crater, separated from the Atlantic by a bar of black sand is an amazing sight. So too are the thundering waves smashing into the jagged lava rocks producing plumes of spray up to thirty feet high. But it's the sunsets that make this place so special. The gated courtyard/garden/pool area faces due west and is 25 yards from the sea. Every evening you draw up a chair, sink a glass of your favourite tipple and marvel at yet another spectacular magical sky as the sun sinks into the ocean. People throng the very good shore-side restaurants, hills and beach, but it's almost your own private show. There's parking right outside the gate, the self-contained maisonette is well converted in an original old home, lots of pictures of the original family, two wells, beamed ceilings. The rep, Claire, was great, knowledgeable, fun and efficient. There are a few tiny niggles, you share your kitchen with some ants, its always windy this time of year on the island, and you have to go to the shared sitting room to get a decent wifi connection. But, so what, did I mention the sunsets? At the end of the village is the start of the coastal path, a 12 kilometre trek across the lava flow where it hit the sea. It's not easy walking, but the path is simple to follow and, if you have the remotest interest in vulcanology, it is truly fascinating. Magma tubes, gas vents, colonising plants and wildlife and always the sea pounding the virgin land. I was in geology heaven. There are some wonderful hotels and villas on Lanzarote, but this place does it for me. Those sunsets………..

A slice of paradise - calm, serene, beautiful, relaxing

    rating17 Nov 2016

After a very busy and hectic few months, me and my partner came to Caleton del Golfo to find some rest, relax and to get away from our busy lives. To get this well deserved rest, we deliberately avoided the big hotels and the super-touristy cities. El Golfo is just a small village, with a nice charm and El Caleton is a very small accommodation. Upon arrival at the accommodation, we were welcomed by the very kind hostess Claire, who took the time to show us around and give some tips about places to visit and restaurants to go to. I'm writing this review from the comfort of the Superior appartment (nicknamed Eufemia). From what I've read, it's the biggest appartment. Contrary to other reviews, I don't think that the rooms are smaller than on the photos, at least, not this appartment. The appartment is very spacious and cosy, with a black and white photograph of the terrace above the bed, and a copy of a Manrique painting above the table. There's a 2 person bed with more than enough room on each side. There's a night stand, a table, and a shelf to store your belongings. Other than that, there's a TV (which remained unused during our stay) chair, a cooling fan and what I think is an air purifier (it's not an airconditioner). There's WiFi in the room. Not very fast, but with a reliable connection. Certainly good enough when you're on a holiday. The appartment didn't get too hot, with temperatures outside being around 20-25 degrees Centegrade in November. You can hear some cars from the nearby road, but it didn't really bother me that much. I sleep with earplugs anyway. The bathroom looks very nice, with a nice symbiosis between old shapes and materials and modern hardware. And a very nice, big shower head, ideal for showering together. The bathroom is also very wel equipped with a regular and a magnifying mirror and a blowdryer. There's soap and body lotion in dispensers on the walls. The closet to store your clothes is also in the bathroom. That might sound a bit strange, but as long as you keep the small bathroom window open, there's not problem. If you don't and you like long and hot showers, the clothes in the closet can get a bit moist. But opening the window solves that. The kitchen is spacious and also well-equiped. There's plenty of plates, cups, bowls, cutlery, pots, pans and so on. There's an oven and a microwave, an electrical stove with 4 burners, a dishwasher, a water boiler and a large refrigerator with freezer. There's even an ironing board and an iron in the closet behind the dining table.I can't think of anything wrong with the room, and we've really enjoyed staying here. But for us, the real uniqueness of Caleton del Golfo is the stunning terrace. It's just so beautiful, with a very nice and rustic, authentic atmosphere and a magnificent sunset every day. Also a perfect place for having breakfast or even dinner. If you're warm, there's even a small swimming pool, and supposedly there's a private ocean pool as well. I'll have to check that tomorrow. One of Caleton del Golfo's many charmes is the intimacy. There's only 4 apartments in total, so it will never be a busy accommodation. The terrace is quite big, so you can enjoy the stunning views in all privacy, even when there are other guests outside as well. Tomorrow is our last day here, and I have to admit I don't want to leave this place yet. I could use a couple more days!So if you're looking for a wonderful place to relax: This is it.

    Pleasant

    rating09 Sept 2016

We have just returned from a week at Caleton, it was pleasant, but I don't think we would return. We have been visiting th Canaries since 1973. We have stopped for coffee in El Golfo a few times and thought we would try a week at Caleton. The apartments are much smaller than in the photographs, we were quite shocked as just how small they were. There is no air conditioning which made the bedroom like a sauna at night. The main road is directly behind Lorenzo apt and can get very noisy late at night and early morning. We had a problem with ants in the bathroom and bedroom. Not pleasant at all. The kitchen is sufficient but there is no oven. The dishwasher is a nice touch. The outside area is beautiful. Very tastefully done and typical Caesar Manrique style. Plenty of sun beds and parasols, nice pool but quite small. Local restaurants are good but very expensive. Be prepared to pay at least £40 for a meal for two, inc wine or beer. A bottle of local wine is around £15 in restaurants. All in all, we had a nice break, but the stuffiness and overbearing heat in the bedroom is enough for us not to return.
