The hotel is a former monastery set on top of a steep hill in the centre of town and the rooms and general amenities are well up to Parador standards but, unfortunately, the cuisine was not. The service at dinner was haphazard and slow, four of the seven red wines on the wine list were "not available" and there were no large bottles of carbonated water, only small ones. A dish of Pork Stew was so over-salted that it was totally inedible and the other item were indifferent at best.

Outstanding Parador on the pilgrims route

This Parador is quite something. A converted monastry/palace. Complete with thick walls, courtyard and cloisters. High up on a hill. We opted for a Junior Suite - we were told that if you didn´t have this you could be located in the annex. Plus the hotel rates were not that high (compared to other hotels. In fact the rate for the Junior Suite was the same for a std room in Cambados). As with all the Paradors, it suffers from a lack of staff - note to managers!! The breakfast time and bar times can be chaotic. The staff work very, very hard but they are under a great pressure. I was very disappointed that the Jacuzzi was out of action (lose two hearts!!). Our suite was marvellous - huge bedroom and lounge and it comes with the odd "facility" of a lady bringing you two floor mats to go by your bed (weird). The room also had a pod coffee machine - nice. The bar/cafeteria was very good but be warned - despite the sign abierto 1100-0000, they don´t serve food after 4 until 2030. I do think the Paradors are missing a trick here, some sandwiches on the bar would help weary travellers. Reception had some games but alas, not much. The cards only had 36/52 cards. There´s a good bookshop in town that sells cards. The lofty postion gives fantastic views but the price is . . it´s a bit of a walk down and even a longer walk up but take your time, it´s well worth it. Lots to see and do (wine museum - tours in English). We also drove 15 mins to Regina Vairan vineyard - recommend this but book, we did the Spanish tour at 1215, there is an English tour at1600. It´s a good tour - very hi-tech plus tastings and of course, magnificent views of the river Sil gorge. The hotel was very busy - it IS on the pilgrims route to Santiago, so lots of interesting people to meet. This had to be one of the best hotels we´ve ever visited. Highly recommend. Even better if it had an EV charger!

Excellent location to walk to the town and nice area for hiking and sightseeing. Rooms were spacious and clean and the beds very comfortable. The front desk acts like a tourist office helping to define nice day trips.

Great location, the monastery is a very charming decor, the restaurant offers high quality foot but the cafetaria is slow with its service. The swimming pool is below average and it’s a pity that the outside dining experience is limited to the courtyard. Better come back after the construction has been finalized.
