  Can’t fault the hotel. Perfect location and rooms were nice. Staff friendly. Would recommend. We came here for the champions league cup final. Very lucky to get this at a really good price. Couldn’t believe our luck.

  Pluses: it is clean. Can't underestimate that.Minuses: #1 - it is LOUD. If your room overlooks Calle Matheu with all the cafes and bars, God help you. They go on ALL NIGHT. Even after one closed at 5 am, people stood around in the street, smoking and drinking until 6 am. Then at 7 am the cafe starts setting up.#2 - staff is typically Madrid-unfriendly and unhelpful. Woman checking us in had no record of our reservation until I brought it up on my iPad. Expected us to pay even though I paid online. No English at all.#3 - We stayed 4 nights and one day our room wasn't cleaned at all, the next day I had to ask at 3:30 pm to have the room made up.#4 - At our last stay in Barcelona I was able to set the language of the TV so American shows would be broadcast in their original language and not Spanish. I couldn't get it to work at Hotel Matheu and Manager tried for 3 minutes, shrugged, said "not possible" and that was it for us -- no TV for 4 days. It would have been a welcome relief from all the constant racket at street level. No offer to find the manual, try a different room, etc.#5 - the air conditioner barely worked and the room was sweltering. It quit working several times and we called staff who restarted it with the remote. They wouldn't leave the remote with us (what are we, children?) so we had to find someone every time it stopped.Really poor experience. Don't stay here unless you like indifferent service, don't mind a room that isn't cleaned, and sleep like the dead.

  Firstly we had booked a room in a nearby hotel (El Pasaje) , but upon arrival they told us that there was a problem with our room, and gave us a room in Hostal Matheu. The room was quite small but the furniture was efficiently placed. It had a nice decoration. The beds were a little hard. The hostal is located on the 1st floor of a building, but there is no elevator. The first hotel we had booked had breakfast, so they gave us a ticket to get buffet breakfast in another nearby hotel, so i'm not sure if this is the case for all the Hostal Matheu's residents. However, that buffet breakfast was good. The location of the hostal is perfect, 2 minutes on foot from Puerta del Sol and the metro station also. It is in walking distance from many sites. There are places to eat in the area, and also many places for shopping. During the night, if you had the window open, you could hear music from nearby shops until about 12-1 am. All in all, mostly owing to the perfect location, and because the negatives were only minor things, i would seriously consider staying here again.

  We had one of our reservations moved to the lovely Hostal Matheu and were pleasantly suprised by the central location near Sol and the charm. It gives fantastic first impressions, great decor and clean rooms. Would recommend others stay in this lovely, quiet hostal.

  We have never stayed in a hostel before, we found this was fine for 3 night. The rooms and bathroom were clean. We did have breakfast in our stay which was in a different place to where we were staying. Breakfast was poor, not much of choice. We could have toast or a crossant. We would not recommend this for anyone as we had a night club below which continued until about 5 in the morning, this was a shame as rooms are very clean and staff are as friendly as they can as don't speak a lot of English.
