Great Staff, Dated Hotel — My Honest Review of Hotel Eco Vía Lusitana

    rating19 May 2026

We recently at Hotel Eco Vía Lusitana during our trip to Madrid. Our trip started off stressful due to flight delays. We originally had a daytime check-in booked, but because of the delays we contacted the hotel in advance and requested a late check-in around 01:00hrs–02:00hrs in the morning. To be fair to the hotel, this was approved without issue. We eventually arrived into Madrid around 01:30hrs and got to the hotel sometime after that, exhausted after travelling all day and night. Unfortunately, our first interaction at reception was not great. The night receptionist came across quite rude and frustrated regarding the booking changes, repeatedly questioning what we had done with the booking and making us feel like we had caused a major issue, even though everything had been approved beforehand. There also seemed to be confusion regarding how the hotel system worked with dates and overnight arrivals. Coming from a hotel background myself, I had always understood that once it passes midnight, it becomes the next day. Any time I have dealt with bookings in hotels, hostels or B&Bs, after midnight was always treated as the next calendar day.So in our case, we had originally booked for Saturday, but changed the arrival to Sunday at around 01:00hrs — meaning Saturday night after midnight into early Sunday morning, not Monday morning. That was my understanding of it anyway, and it seemed there was confusion or frustration surrounding that on arrival. That rough first impression definitely affected how we initially viewed the hotel. Now, in fairness, it did appear that parts of the hotel may have been undergoing renovation or refurbishment works during our stay. However, there was absolutely no indication of this beforehand on Booking.com, on the hotel website, or anywhere clearly communicated around the property itself. The hotel overall, in my personal opinion, feels extremely dated and in need of major refurbishment in several areas. The grounds outside felt neglected and dirty, and inside the hotel there were areas that simply did not feel properly maintained. The first room we were placed into was passable at best, but once you started looking around properly, there were issues such as wallpaper peeling from the walls and an overall tired appearance.Another issue for us was the complete lack of basic guest facilities. There was no kettle in the room, no microwave access for guests, and no practical way to heat food or even make a simple tea or coffee. The explanation given referenced COVID-19, but we have stayed in multiple hotels in different countries since COVID and have never encountered this issue to such an extent. Even when kettles are not provided in rooms, there is usually at least a microwave or hot water station somewhere accessible to guests. The hotel also does not really have what most people would consider a proper restaurant area. It was more a sectioned-off corner of the foyer/lounge area with a few tables, chairs, breakfast items and a toaster. The first room we were given also had twin beds despite specifically requesting a double room. Thankfully, after speaking with reception and management, we were moved to Room 406, which was a massive improvement. Room 406 was genuinely a lovely room with a large double bed and was far more comfortable and presentable than the original room. Now this is where the staff truly deserve praise.I especially want to thank Sylvia and Sara, who were absolutely excellent throughout our stay. Both were warm, welcoming, patient and genuinely professional people. Sara, working in the bar/lounge area, was always friendly and approachable and honestly brought a much nicer atmosphere to the place. Sylvia was incredibly helpful whenever we needed assistance and treated us with kindness and professionalism from the moment we dealt with her.I also want to acknowledge Maria José Guijarro, the Head of Reception, who did take the time to listen to our concerns and helped resolve the room situation. That was appreciated. Most of the staff we encountered after that difficult first night were genuinely lovely people and did their best to help wherever they could. So while I still personally feel the hotel itself does not live up to the image presented online and is far more dated than expected for the price charged, I also think it is only fair to separate the condition of the property from the efforts of the staff working there. The staff, for the most part, were excellent.Madrid itself was absolutely beautiful, and despite the rocky start, we still had a wonderful trip overall.Thank you again to the staff members who treated us with kindness and professionalism during our stay.

    A run-down facility

    rating22 Feb 2026

Likes: There was a safe garage for the car. Friendly and helpful staff. Well functioning room cleaning.Stable wifi.Dislikes: -The building is run-down. The staircase next to our room was covered by black mold. Also our bathroom ceiling had signs of water damage. There was no mention on the website that the hotel's ground floor and the main entrance are under major renovation, and that the temporary reception, the lobby and the breakfast area are amidst of a construction site.Like the rest of the building, the room was a bit gloomy and outworn, and worst of all, it reeked of stale cigarette smoke.Even though there is a metro station nearby, the trip to the center takes almost an hour (you have to change the metro line twice, that is from nr 11 to nr 6 to nr 3).Based on our travel around Spain for a month and on sleeping in over 10 hotels/hostels, you can find remarkably better value for your money somewhere else.

Easy to get to Madrid by metro. Comfy hotel.

    rating09 Oct 2023

Clean hotel with helpful staff. Great location 2 mins walk from metro station into central Madrid! Decent breakfast had 1 on last morning.Comfy bed and soft towels.Only thing safe didn’t work even after 3 different cards provided by reception. There’s a few places to eat nearby in the evening. But it’s out of town and in a residential area. Definitely not a trendy area.Front of hotel does look tired and scruffy, hopefully it’ll get new pavers and flower pots soon.
