  Poor maintenance leading to dangerous light switches

  Although we enjoyed our visit to Bilbao, accomodation, while, at first sight, more than fine, proved poor. After several unsuccessful attempts by Spirit to mend the boiler in the room we were in, we were given a new room. But then we found out that room's problems: heating was not working (we only checked it, but in fact did not need it) and the shower seemed to leak slightly at the corner nearest the window. But the MAJOR problem is that the light switch for the bathroom is downright dangerous! They knew this as their staff had been in that room before we moved in. That is a major health and safety issue . We took a photo for the record. We have reported it to the firm in the check-out email but have received no acknowledgement 2 days later.The individual staff we met were all helpful but the problem seems to be absence of investment in routine maintenance. in view of all the problems and the time we spent waiting for hot water to be provided, and the time it took for us to change over rooms, I have for the first time in my life claimed some refund in the hope it will spur them to improve the condition of teh apartments.More minor problem - which the staff worked round, is that they imagine everyone has a smartphone for checking in etc - more than a bit silly, and definitely age-discriminatory. As I say, the staff worked round that.But I would not use them again unless I was convinced the maintenance work had been done.

  Pleasant week in Bilbao

  We (5 adults) stayed in Atxuri for 7 nights and enjoyed our stay. The hotel is located on a high hill 10 minutes walk from the old town. There was a bus stop 100 m down the hill but some days we walked the 15 minutes it took to the metro station. And if you walked to the old town then you could as well continue for another 10 and you were in downtown. If you would like to just step out for a dinner then I would recommend a hotel closer to the city center.The room was good with two bedrooms and a livingroom. The sofa bed in the living room was not a good one. Otherwise everything was OK. A dish washer would have been better though, than the washing machine that was part of the kitchen equipment.

  Just staid in a 5persons apartment. The apartment is modern, spacious, very very clean. The kitchen is well equipped, the staff is very friendly and helpful. Situation not really great but ok. Walking distance to the old city and to the tram which takes you to the Guggenheim. One negative point: we had access to our balcony from a bedroom, which we found rather strange. But otherwise good value for the money.

  Just ok. Nothing to write home about.

  Booked same as the photographs were madly misleading on the well known web site I booked them on. They were much further out of Bilbao then I was lead to believe and the rooms did not resemble anything like the photographs that were on the web site. Plug sockets were out of alignment and I noticed loads of faults in the room. Tried the coffee machine in the hall, did not work Not even a corner shop open where you could buy a bar of chocolate. As luck would have it we arrived on a Sunday where the lovely helpful receptionist proceeded to tell us that basically all the restaurants close in Bilbao on a Sunday. She was right we had a terrible job trying literally to find anywhere to eat and as we had had rather a light breakfast we were starving. It took us the guts of nearly an hour to find somwhere and even that was not good. Other than the Giuggenheim there is basically nothing else to do in Bilbao, the town itself is ok but after a few hours one would basically have seen everything. Disappointed in same.

  Nice flats, not the best location

  The Atxuri apartments were p[erfectly cleamn and comfortable. Why stay in a hotel when for the same price you can have a whole apartment. The staff evenb upgraded us at no cost because of a slight hiccup in the reservations. So it was a nice stay. The only slight downside is the location, just outside the edge of the city centre and up a hill. Not more than a few minutes walk down to the tram, but walking back up at the end of a long hot day could be a bit annoying. Also a bit annoying that the Wifi was only in the lounge/reception and not in the room - but we were on holiday so not really a problem.
