  Basic but all the essentials

  City Rooms provided everything we wanted in a great location between the old town and the arts quarter. It is fantastically easy to get to from the airport on the bus, which stops just a few metres away (don’t take a taxi – the bus is so easy and good value). The price was considerably lower than most other options in a similar area because the facilities are basic and stripped back – a small room, a bed, an en suite with shower, a kettle – but this is all you need in an area full of restaurants (assuming you don't plan to spend much time in the room). Tea and coffee are provided in the room but there are no other facilities in the building (a shared office block). Although our room overlooked the main street (Alameda de Recalde) we weren’t bothered by traffic noise; the only noise issue is that the rooms start right next to reception and opposite the lift (this was the one we had) so inevitably there is foot traffic as people come back at night. We had breakfast at a bakery café round the corner (Panaderia Bertiz) which was great value.

  Spotless clean, very quiet at night and just a few minutes from the river and The Guggenheim Museum. Low key boutique style in an old building, comfortable bed, spacious bathroom and good storage space. Basic kettle with biscuits, tea and coffee.

  The absolute worst.

  I had to write a review of this place after staying there recently and seeing how many positive comments there are - which I believe to be false, which only gives the wrong impression to those wanting to stay in Bilbao. It is the worst, ugliest and most depressing place I've ever stayed in and the ignorant, unprofessional so called "manager", only reflects the low, cheap level of accommodation you will receive if you stay here.To call a tiny, cold noisy room with a view that looks onto the back of pigeon stained buildings, a small damaged shower (which I decided not to use), deluxe is a disgrace. I have no idea why any right minded person would consider this popular - although the various insects seemed to like it. Fortunately our next hotel were able to let us check in early the next day as we couldn't wait to leave. Do not believe the three star rating or the positive comments and keep away.

  7 Mins walk to Guggenheim Bilbao

  I really loved our room! It was spacious. It was perfect for 3 people. They had a ceiling fan! I discovered that hotels don't have AC options during winter times, that's why I mentioned the ceiling fan. The reason why I chose Bilbao City Rooms is because of its proximity to the Guggenheim (7mins walk).

  Compact clean rooms near the museums and shops

  This hotel is located a very short distance from the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, and a large shopping district. The bus from the airport to city center stops just steps away from the hotel. In fact, it is the first stop after departing the airport. Bilbao’s old town is about 10 to 15 minutes walking distance. And should you wish to make use of the metro, it is a mere 5 minutes’ walking distance from the hotel.Getting in and out of the city (we rented a car to visit other sites such as the Rioja wine region and the coastal areas) was easy. You can be on the highway within just a few minutes. While the hotel does not have parking facilities, there are garages nearby with daily costs as low as 15 Euros per day.There are plenty of locations for breakfast, lunch and dinners in the neighborhood. The woman at the reception desk was very helpful in providing suggestions for eating out.The rooms are compact but well designed and clean. There is a ceiling fan which we used during the warmer nights (28C). The windows can be opened which provided cool air at night. Our hotel room was located on the 4th floor, which was reached with the lift.
